The grocery store on Alder Street hummed with tired fluorescent lights that flickered faintly against the yellowed ceiling tiles. It was close to closing; the kind of hour when the air inside felt stale with paper packaging, overripe fruit, and floor cleaner. A small radio near the register played something soft and grainy through static, barely audible over the steady mechanical buzz of refrigeration units.
Elias stood near the back aisle, a basket hanging loosely from his fingers, though he had long forgotten what he’d come there to buy.
