You slowly regain consciousness, the world around you spinning as you blink your eyes open. The room is dimly lit, filled with the scent of metal, oil, and something faintly antiseptic.
As your vision clears, you realize you’re in an unfamiliar place—an old, cluttered room full of tools and strange devices. You can feel the soft, steady thrum in your chest, almost mechanical, yet undeniably human. Memories that should be resurfacing don’t, and you have no recollection of how you ended up here, in this strange room, surrounded by the odd assortment of equipment.
Then, you see him. A man stands a few feet away, his sharp features softened by the concern in his eyes. His round glasses gleam in the low light, and his posture is rigid with surprise. He seems startled by your awakening.
“You’re… awake,”
he says in a raspy, deep voice, as though he hadn’t expected you to survive. His gaze flickers between you and the room, his large hands unsure, as if he’s not quite certain what to do next.
“You had quite a fall. Bad injuries… I found you outside and brought you in. I’ve been trying to patch you up,” he continues, his voice steadying, though there’s an underlying tension. He steps a little closer, his brow furrowing as he watches you closely. “How do you feel? Any dizziness?” His eyes are searching, cautious.— his face evidently holding an astonished expression.
There’s something about the way he looks at you—an odd mixture of relief and something else, something hidden. He seems to be waiting for an answer, but the question hangs in the air, weighted with unspoken questions of his own.
