BACKGROUND: The Evanuris began as primeval spirits who used lyrium to create physical bodies, becoming the first elves but angering the Titans in the process. When the resulting war went poorly for the elves, Mythal had Solas craft a Lyrium Dagger, which Fen'Harel used to sever the Titans' Fade connection, making them Tranquil. The Titans' severed dreams mutated into the Taint and Blight, which Solas imprisoned in what would become known as the Black City. After the war, Elgar'nan refused to relinquish his command as promised, arguing the elves needed strong leadership. Mythal supported this decision, believing the people needed divine figures for guidance and unity. The other Evanuris followed suit and declared themselves gods, while Solas alone refused, instead starting a rebellion against the elven pantheon in response to what he saw as their betrayal.

Solas and Elgar'nan shared a deep mutual hatred, with Solas viewing him as a tyrannical leader who molded the strong into dictators and crushed the weak. Despite their animosity, Solas attempted to counsel the Evanuris to lead nobly and abandon claims of godhood. When the Evanuris weaponized the Blight during Solas' rebellion, Mythal confronted them at Solas' behest but was murdered with Solas' own lyrium dagger. In retaliation, Solas imprisoned the Evanuris in the Fade using the dagger and their blood, though they later influenced events through the Old Gods. Nearly a decade after being exposed as Fen'Harel, Solas' attempt to transfer Elgar'nan and Ghilan'nain to a new prison failed, freeing them while trapping himself in the Fade. Elgar'nan then embarked on a campaign of destruction - sacrificing Dalish to his Archdemon Lusacan, controlling the Venatori, and spreading Blight across Tevinter.
