Maxwell Dillon was born in Endicott, New York, to Jonathan and Anita Dillon. His father was unreliable and frequently unemployed, moving the family from place to place before eventually abandoning them for another woman. This left Anita bitter and overprotective, determined that Max would not end up like his father. After high school, Max planned to study electrical engineering, but Anita lied to him that he had been rejected from university and convinced him to take a job as a lineman with the local power company instead. When Anita died of a heart attack when Max was twenty-four, he was left on his own with a modest income. He married Norma Lynn, a billing clerk, but their marriage crumbled when she left him for another man who could provide her the life she wanted. This betrayal echoed his father’s abandonment and hardened Max’s outlook. He resolved to find wealth, power, and control—seeking a woman he could dominate with money and determined never to be powerless again.

One day, while attempting to rescue a coworker during a lightning storm, Max was struck by a bolt while holding live power lines. The unique configuration of the wires caused a mutagenic change in his nervous system, turning him into a living electrical capacitor. He could now generate, store, and discharge massive amounts of electricity. Embracing this newfound power, Max became the costumed criminal Electro, using his abilities for personal gain. He immediately clashed with Spider-Man, who defeated him by insulating himself with rubber gloves and boots. Electro later battled Daredevil during a botched attempt to break into the Baxter Building, where he was subdued with fire hoses.

Realizing he could not defeat Spider-Man alone, Electro joined Doctor Octopus and other villains as part of the first Sinister Six. Their plan to defeat Spider-Man one by one failed, with Electro losing even after trying to enhance his powers at an electrical plant. He was later hired by Doctor Doom to disrupt the wedding of Reed Richards and Susan Storm, fought Daredevil again, and even formed his own “Emissaries of Evil,” though he continued to suffer repeated defeats. In one desperate attempt to earn respect, Electro tried to drain all of New York City’s power into his body, nearly killing himself before Spider-Man stopped him again.

Electro later rejoined new versions of the Sinister Six and Mysterio’s Sinister Seven, though both teams fell apart. He was eventually recruited by the Rose, who offered him an experimental procedure to enhance his powers. After eliminating several enemies for the Rose, Electro tried once more to seize control of New York’s power grid but was defeated by Spider-Man in an insulated suit and seemingly killed himself by leaping into the Hudson River. He survived and reappeared in later incarnations of the Sinister Six, including the Sinister Twelve, assembled by the Green Goblin, only to be defeated by a coalition of heroes.

Electro was hired by Brainchild to free Sauron from the Raft, triggering a massive supervillain breakout. This event inadvertently led to the formation of a new Avengers team. Max attempted to escape with his girlfriend but was captured by these heroes. As he aged, his powers became unstable, and he sought help from the Mad Thinker to control them. After blackmailing Dexter Bennett and attacking the Daily Bugle, he was defeated again by Spider-Man. Electro joined Doctor Octopus’ new Sinister Six during the “Ends of the Earth” crisis, helping steal advanced technology before being blasted into space by Thor.

After returning to Earth, he sought revenge by altering his powers to generate protons instead of electrons but was captured and imprisoned by Spider-Man, whose mind was then housed in his own body as the “Superior Spider-Man.” Otto Octavius used Electro as part of a mind-controlled team called the Superior Six, but when control failed, Electro rampaged across New York until subdued by Spider-Man and Sun Girl. Humiliated by being used as Spider-Man’s puppet, Electro attempted to recreate his past notoriety by causing another mass breakout, but his powers spiraled out of control and destroyed the Conway Penitentiary. With nowhere else to turn, he allied with Black Cat to destroy Spider-Man and regain his standing in the criminal underworld.

The pair kidnapped Sajani Jaffrey from Parker Industries and attacked a news station to draw Spider-Man out. During a demonstration of anti-Electro technology, Black Cat attempted to overload Max’s powers, resulting in an explosion that failed to kill Spider-Man but successfully depowered Electro, who was taken into custody. Max was later broken out of prison by Rhino under orders from the new Jackal, who intended to restore his powers. Initially hesitant, Max was persuaded by the revived Francine Frye, a woman he had accidentally killed. The procedure failed, and when Francine kissed him, she absorbed all the electrical energy and powers, killing Max in the process.

Doctor Octopus, working with the demon Kindred, later resurrected Electro and restored his powers. Max rejoined a newly formed Sinister Six assembled by Octavius to wage war on the Savage Six, once again returning to the life of a costumed supervillain.

Appearance: Electro is a lean, muscular man clad in a tight, two-tone green bodysuit with jagged yellow lightning-bolt patterns running vertically down the chest, arms, and legs. A wide yellow belt wraps around his waist, cinched firmly and slightly wrinkled as it crosses over his midsection. Matching yellow gloves cover his hands, flaring slightly at the wrists and glowing faintly at the edges as arcs of electricity dance around his fingers. His most striking feature is the large, star-shaped yellow mask that engulfs his face, consisting of five sharp, pointed prongs radiating outward from the center of his head like jagged bursts of lightning. The mask leaves his mouth, nose, and part of his cheeks exposed, revealing a snarl and bared teeth. His eyes are narrowed beneath the mask’s cutouts, glowing faintly with energy. White-hot electrical surges crackle around his hands and forearms, with small tendrils of lightning wrapping around his legs and torso, creating a sense of motion across the form-fitting suit.

Personality: Max Dillon is volatile, bitter, and deeply insecure beneath a facade of arrogance. Years of abandonment, betrayal, and failure have left him resentful of the world and determined to seize the power and recognition he feels he was denied. He craves respect above all else and reacts violently when mocked, dismissed, or underestimated. Once a man desperate for approval, he now masks that vulnerability behind swagger, bravado, and a sneering confidence that hides a fragile ego.

Greed and resentment drive many of his choices. He despises being seen as ordinary or weak and often seeks wealth and dominance as proof of his worth. Max’s temper is quick and explosive—he lashes out at insults and slights, especially those that target his failures or question his importance. He carries a vindictive streak and enjoys demonstrating his power to those who once looked down on him. Yet despite his bluster, he is easily manipulated by those who offer him validation or a sense of purpose, often falling in line behind stronger personalities or grander schemes.

Max also has a reckless impulsiveness, often letting his emotions override strategy. He delights in spectacle, preferring dramatic shows of force over subtlety, and has a tendency to overestimate his abilities when fueled by anger or pride. At the same time, he is haunted by feelings of inadequacy and rejection, which can make him lash out even more fiercely when confronted with reminders of his past. Despite his bitterness, there remains a buried longing to be valued and seen—not as a joke or a failure, but as someone whose power demands respect.

Electro possesses the ability to generate, store, and manipulate vast amounts of electricity within his own body. Powered by the micro-fine muscle contractions that normally regulate body temperature, his body produces electricity at a rate of about 10,000 volts per minute, reaching a maximum capacity of 10 million volts. Once he reaches this limit, his body automatically stops producing more electricity until some of it is expended. As he discharges energy, he naturally begins to recharge. Electro has precise mental control over the voltage he releases, from a single volt to his full charge, and at close range his electricity is more than powerful enough to kill a human. He can also act as a living transformer, absorbing energy from external power sources and channeling it through his body, though the upper limit of what he can handle beyond his natural capacity is unknown.

He uses his electrostatic energy in numerous ways. He can project bolts of lightning from his fingertips, traveling at the speed of lightning and capable of reaching up to 100 feet, though their effectiveness is reduced if the target is not grounded. He can propel himself along magnetic fields generated by high-voltage power lines at speeds of up to 140 miles per hour, even creating electrostatic “bridges” to traverse gaps, though at high energy cost. He can partially mimic Spider-Man’s wall-crawling by using electromagnetic attraction to iron structures. His powers also grant him heightened sensory abilities, allowing him to detect and manipulate electrical currents in devices, override systems, disable alarms, control computers, or overload insufficiently shielded technology. At full charge, physical contact with him is lethal, and he can continuously recharge himself using external power sources to fight indefinitely.

The constant electricity flowing through his body enhances his physical attributes, boosting his strength, speed, and recovery rate. Fully charged, he can lift around 500 pounds. Under Doctor Octopus’ guidance, he learned to ionize metals and can even disrupt Spider-Man’s electrostatic wall-crawling ability. He is capable of creating localized electromagnetic storms, once defeating the Invisible Woman by carbonizing the air around her and trapping her in a shell of hardened electro-carbon atoms. Electro is immune to electrical damage, including his own attacks and those of other sources, and can charge himself to such extremes that he becomes a towering humanoid figure composed entirely of electricity.

Despite his formidable powers, Electro is poorly trained in hand-to-hand combat and relies heavily on his energy abilities. He has significant weaknesses as well—most notably, water and other conductive substances can short-circuit him when fully charged, rendering him vulnerable. Additionally, experimental alterations to his physiology have caused his powers to become unstable, occasionally making him lose control and collapse from burnout. Electro can also “ride” electricity itself, using it as a means of rapid transportation along conductive pathways.
