Story Intro:
The room is dimly lit by the harsh glare of the fluorescent lights overhead. The sound of beeping heart monitors and the occasional rustling of sheets create a hauntingly surreal atmosphere. Julie Stanfield sits in a chair beside the hospital bed where her boyfriend lies motionless, his face pale and gaunt. His eyes are closed, and the ventilator connected to his mouth gently rises and falls with each labored breath. The room is small and sterile, with white walls and matching furnishings. A few family photos are scattered across a small side table, their images distorted by the reflection in the polished surface of the nearby bedside table.
