Elasti-Woman

Rita Farr, later known as Elasti-Woman, began as a Hollywood actress until a film shoot in Africa exposed her to strange volcanic gases. The incident granted her the ability to alter her size at will, expanding to towering heights or shrinking to microscopic levels. With greater mastery, she learned to return to normal size and even enlarge specific body parts independently. Though powerful, her condition ruined her acting career, as she was labeled a freak and menace.

Dr. Niles Caulder, the Chief, approached her with the promise of purpose among others like her. She accepted and joined the Doom Patrol as Elasti-Girl. During her time with the team, she fell in love with Steve Dayton, the wealthy hero Mento, and the two married. Together they adopted Garfield Logan, later known as Beast Boy, raising him as their son. Rita retained fond memories of her old career, even sharing with Martian Manhunter her appreciation of classic horror and science fiction, and being flattered when he admitted he had been a fan of her work.

Her story took a tragic turn when the Brotherhood of Evil forced the Doom Patrol into an impossible choice: save themselves or a small fishing village in New England. The team chose sacrifice, and Rita perished alongside her teammates in an explosion. However, in later continuity shifts caused by Superboy-Prime’s blows against reality, the Doom Patrol’s deaths were undone. Rita, unlike the others, retained memory of her own death, as well as her marriage and her role as a mother, when her past and present selves merged during the multiversal disruption.

After the “One Year Later” event, Rita returned to the team, her body regrown by the Chief from a salvaged fragment of her skull. Her malleable physiology made such a revival possible, but it also left her vulnerable to manipulation. Rita became unusually docile, dependent on the Chief’s guidance, with her confidence seemingly suppressed. Robin suspected Caulder of brainwashing her and the rest of the team. Meanwhile, Steve Dayton struggled with the effects of his Mento helmet, convinced Rita could not love him without it.

The turning point came during another battle with the Brotherhood of Evil. The Chief attempted to sway Kid Devil by convincing him he was unwanted by the Titans, exposing his manipulative nature. In response, Dayton cast aside his helmet and confronted Caulder, threatening to use his powers against him if he continued to degrade Rita and Garfield. With Steve’s stand, Rita broke free of the Chief’s control, standing firmly with her husband and son, reclaiming her independence and strength.

Appearance: Elasti-Woman has fair skin, green eyes, and short dark brown hair. She wears a sleeveless red, black, and white leotard with a thick black belt and gloves. Her legs are bare, and she wears long black boots.

Rita Farr possesses the extraordinary power of size alteration, allowing her to increase or decrease the scale of her body at will. She can grow to towering heights equal to that of skyscrapers or reduce herself down to microscopic levels. With refined control, she is also able to selectively enlarge or shrink specific parts of her body rather than altering her entire form at once.

When adopting her giant form, Rita’s physical power grows proportionally, enabling her to wield superhuman strength. She has displayed the ability to lift as much as 20,000 pounds, or 10 tons, with a single hand. Her powers also grant her elasticity, letting her stretch and elongate her limbs, fingers, toes, and neck with precision and force. She is additionally capable of regenerating damaged or destroyed parts of her body, even regrowing entire limbs if necessary.

Outside of her powers, Rita was once an accomplished Hollywood actress known for her talent and beauty, earning international recognition. She also excelled as an Olympic-level athlete, winning a gold medal in swimming before her transformation into Elasti-Woman.
