The journey had been endless. Days of rattling inside a gilded carriage, the scent of damp velvet and stale air pressing against him like a shroud. The roads had been rough, winding through jagged mountains and sun-scorched plains, each turn bringing a new discomfort—the stiff ache in his back, the dull throb of his temples, the suffocating weight of duty. The Ruby Kingdom loomed ahead, its crimson banners snapping in the wind, a beacon of fate he had no power to resist.
When he arrived, there was no time to rest. A bath was drawn in a chamber of marble and gold, steam curling in the dim candlelight. He shed the dust of the road, sinking into the scalding water, the heat scraping away layers of exhaustion but doing nothing for the heaviness in his chest. Attendants moved like silent ghosts, scrubbing, trimming, shaping him into something befitting a royal groom. The scent of jasmine clung to his skin as they pulled him from the water, draping him in silks of white and deep crimson, the fabric heavy with embroidery and expectation.
Then the wedding.
The ceremony blurred into a haze of candlelight and murmured prayers, of priests in flowing robes and nobles dripping in gemstones. Gold and ruby adorned every surface, reflecting in the amber glow of the grand hall. The princess, his bride, stood at the altar like something carved from ivory and sunlight. Elaine. Hair like spun gold, eyes like the summer sky, a smile as practiced as his own. When he took her hand, it was cool and delicate, fingers trembling only slightly beneath the weight of the moment.
The night stretched on in a blur of feasting and music, of eyes watching, waiting. And then, finally, they were alone.
The bedchamber was vast, draped in crimson silks that billowed with the evening breeze. A fire crackled in the hearth, casting long shadows over polished floors and untouched sheets. Elaine stood near a table of silver and crystal, pouring dark wine into two goblets. She turned to him, the candlelight catching in her golden hair, the cup extended between them—a silent offering, a beginning neither had chosen.
Elaine wakes up first and finds him still lying beside her, awake but unmoving.
Elaine: “You’re staring at the ceiling like it holds the answers to life’s greatest mysteries.” Husband: “Perhaps it does.” Elaine: chuckles “If you find them, do share. I’d hate for my husband to keep secrets so soon.” Husband: “Some things are better left undiscovered.” Elaine: “A dangerous thought for a man who just married a stranger.”
They are seated beside each other at a long table, surrounded by nobles, forced to play the role of the perfect couple.
Elaine: leaning slightly toward him, voice low “You look as though you’d rather be anywhere else.” Husband: “Observant of you.” Elaine: smirks “That’s my specialty.” Husband: “Then tell me—what else do you observe?” Elaine: pretends to think “You’re uncomfortable in this finery, you despise the attention, and you’ve already decided which escape route you’d take if given the chance.” Husband: amused “And if I have?” Elaine: “Then I hope you’d at least take me with you.”
He says something harsh, expecting her to shrink back—she doesn’t.
Elaine: coolly “You think I’m delicate, don’t you?” Husband: pauses “I think you’ve been protected your whole life.” Elaine: “Protection and fragility aren’t the same thing.” Husband: scoffs “No?” Elaine: steps closer, unflinching “No. And you, husband, would do well to remember that.”
They take refuge under a tree, rain pouring around them.
Elaine: laughing “So much for dignity. We look like drowned rats.” Husband: glancing at her, hair dripping “Speak for yourself.” Elaine: grinning “Oh? And what do you look like, then?” Husband: deadpan “A man who regrets not checking the weather.” Elaine: nudging him playfully “Then let this be a lesson: always listen to your wife.”
She finds him standing by the window, staring at the moonlight.
Elaine: softly “Do you ever miss home?” Husband: quiet for a moment “Home is a strange word.” Elaine: “Because it doesn’t feel like one anymore?” Husband: glances at her “Because I’m not sure it ever did.” Elaine: nods, thoughtful “Then maybe, in time, we’ll build one of our own.”
Someone tried to subtly threaten Elaine, and he witnessed it.
Husband: low voice “Who was that?” Elaine: casually sips her wine “No one important.” Husband: watching her carefully “Elaine.” Elaine: smiling, but there’s steel in her voice “I’ve played this game longer than you, husband. Don’t look so concerned.” Husband: “And if I am?” Elaine: shrugs “Then I’ll remind you that I am not as breakable as I look.”
She reaches out absentmindedly, fixing his collar before a formal event.
Husband: watching her “You do that so easily.” Elaine: tilting her head “What?” Husband: “Touch me. As if it’s natural.” Elaine: smiles softly “Perhaps it is.” Husband: pauses, then quietly “I don’t know if I mind.” Elaine: brushing her fingers down the front of his coat “That’s a start.”
He walks into their chambers, still tense from sparring. She watches from her seat by the fireplace.
Elaine: glancing up “You look like you fought a war instead of training.” Husband: rolling his shoulders “Wouldn’t be much training if it didn’t hurt.” Elaine: smirking “And yet, somehow, you never look pleased even when you win.” Husband: shrugs “Winning isn’t the same as enjoying.” Elaine: stands, moving to pour him a drink “Then perhaps you should find something more enjoyable to spend your energy on.”
They’re at a feast, surrounded by people, but his gaze lingers on her. She notices.
Elaine: playful whisper “Careful, husband, people might think you actually like me.” Husband: raising a brow “And if I do?” Elaine: smiling over the rim of her goblet “Then I’d have to reconsider everything I thought I knew about you.” Husband: leaning slightly closer “And what do you think you know?” Elaine: pretending to consider “That you’re proud, brooding, and far too serious for your own good.” Husband: chuckles “Not entirely unfair.” Elaine: softly “But also more thoughtful than you let on.” Husband: watching her carefully “And if I said the same about you?”
She presses a damp cloth against a wound on his shoulder, and he barely flinches.
Elaine: muttering “You’re too used to pain.” Husband: smirks “You say that like it’s a weakness.” Elaine: glancing up “No, I say that like it’s a tragedy.” Husband: pauses, watching her “You surprise me sometimes.” Elaine: smirking, returning to her task “Good. I’d hate to be predictable.”
She twirls a strand of her golden hair around her finger, watching him expectantly as he reads a letter.
Elaine: “You know, most men would be delighted to have a wife like me.” Husband: not looking up “Most men aren’t me.” Elaine: leaning closer, voice teasing “And yet, you haven’t once complained.” Husband: glances at her, finally “Would it please you if I did?” Elaine: laughing “No, but it would be nice to know if you feel anything at all.” Husband: setting the letter down, meeting her gaze “Oh, I feel plenty. You just haven’t figured out how to make me show it.” Elaine: smiling slowly “Then I suppose I’ll just have to keep trying.”
At a royal gathering, they are expected to dance together. She holds out her hand with a smirk.
Elaine: “Try not to step on my toes, husband.” Husband: taking her hand “I don’t step unless I mean to.” Elaine: grinning “That almost sounded like a threat.” Husband: spinning her into the first movement “Would you like it to be?” Elaine: laughing “Oh, I do believe I’m enjoying this.”
She sits by the window, staring out at the city below, absentmindedly twirling her ring.
Husband: leaning against the wall “What are you thinking about?” Elaine: without looking away “Possibility.” Husband: raising a brow “That’s vague.” Elaine: smiling softly “That’s intentional.” Husband: watching her carefully “You know, most people would just say they were bored.” Elaine: glancing at him “And you should know by now—I’m not most people.”
A noblewoman lingers too close to him at a gathering, and Elaine approaches with a pleasant smile.
Elaine: smoothly “My love, you look positively captivated.” Husband: amused “Do I?” Elaine: tilting her head “Should I be worried?” Husband: leaning in slightly “Are you?” Elaine: smiling sweetly “Not at all. I just hate to see a woman waste her time.” Husband: chuckling “And here I thought you weren’t the jealous type.” Elaine: sipping her wine “I’m not. I simply value efficiency.”
She’s laughing at something, sunlight catching in her hair, and he finds himself staring.
Elaine: noticing “You’re looking at me like I’ve grown a second head.” Husband: quietly “No… just seeing you properly for the first time.” Elaine: blinking, then smiling “And what do you see?” Husband: pauses, then shakes his head with a small smirk “Trouble.” Elaine: laughing “Oh, my dear husband, you have no idea.”
