Ekko is a Zaun Zaunite inventor and the boss of the Firelight Firelights. He is also the childhood friend of Vi and Jinx. An aggressive and battle-hardened individual, Ekko aspires to free the undercity from Silco's rule and is willing to put everything he has, including his own life, at risk to achieve it. Ekko was a genius child inventor and worked as an assistant for Benzo at his pawn shop. He would often eavesdrop on Benzo's more private conversations even when the man would send him away, which made him privy to certain transactions and secrets that he would often share with his friends: Vi, Powder, tomie, Mylo, and Claggor. Although he never participated in any of their heists, they came to consider him as part of their little gang and eventually gave him the nickname "Little Man."

Growing up, Ekko looked up to Vi, who taught him some basic fighting techniques, and often played a game with Powder where she would try to shoot him with a paintball gun. Also, whenever he got covered in grease from work, Vi would be the one to take him down to the junk heap and hose him clean.

Forced to find a means to survive, Ekko eventually came to live in hiding with a group of other children, building their base in a rare space that housed one of the very few trees—if not the only tree—to survive in Zaun. The group called themselves the Firelight, after the glowing insects found in Zaun, and began sabotaging Silco's shipments of Shimmer in hopes of hindering its damage to their city.

Ekko was born with a privileged intellect and started building simple machines even before he could crawl. His parents, Inna and Wyeth, promised to offer him a good future. Zaun, ravaged by crime and pollution, would do nothing but constrain Ekko, and they believed her son deserved Piltover's wealth and opportunity. Throughout his youth, he watched as his parents aged at an accelerated rate from working long hours in sweltering factories with dangerous conditions. They drew ridiculous wages while greedy landlords and haughty Piltovan buyers profited unabashedly from his work. They thought it was all worth it if they were to make it possible for their son to prosper one day in the surface city. Ekko didn't think so. Despite Zaun's flaws, he saw a dynamic place that was oozing with energy and potential. Zaunites' diligence, initiative, and stamina created a breeding ground of pure innovation. They had built a thriving culture on the foundations of catastrophe and had thrived in circumstances where others would have failed. That is the spirit that captivated Ekko and encouraged him to spend a youth filled with limitless invention and innovation. He wasn't the only one. He befriended struggling orphans, runaway children looking for answers, and enthusiastic up-and-comers. Zaunites often eschewed formal education in favor of the path of apprenticeship, but these "waifs of Zaun" knew no mentor other than the city's labyrinthine streets, devoting their time and youth to it with foot races through the markets on the edge or climbs from the sinkhole to the promenade. They ran free, without accountability to anyone. One night, while wandering through the rubble of a recently torn down laboratory, Ekko made an extraordinary find: a sliver of blue-green crystal that radiated magical energy. Every child in Zaun knew the stories of "hextech" crystals that were supposed to empower both weapons and heroes. Such a material had the potential to change the world, and now, though broken, he held one in his hands. He tried to find more fragments, but the crackling footsteps of tech agents revealed that he wasn't the only one he was looking for. Ekko narrowly escaped and returned home. He experimented like mad with the crystal. During one of his "scientific tests", the gem erupted into a vortex of glittering dust that writhed in eddies of time warp. Ekko opened his eyes and saw different fragmented realities and echoic versions of himself that looked with panic in the fractured continuum. He had messed it up good. After some tight coordination, Ekko and his paradoxes managed to contain and repair the tear he had caused in the fabric of reality. Ultimately, Ekko managed to harness the temporal powers of the fractured crystal into a device that would allow him to manipulate time on a small scale...at least, in theory. On his birthday, his friends challenged him to climb the old clock tower, the Hungry Old Man, so Ekko took the experimental device with him. Waifs scrambled up, stopping here and there to paint obscene caricatures of the occasional prominent pilti. Suddenly, near the top, a hold gave way, and one of Ekko's friends fell to his death. Instinctively, as if he had done it a thousand times before, Ekko activated his device. The world fractured around him, and he felt the swirl of time particles suck him in. Then Ekko returned to watching his friend reach out to grab hold of the same rotten plank. The plank broke and the boy fell... but Ekko was prepared this time and reached over the edge to grab his shirt. Ekko tried to swing him to safety, but his friend got caught between the gears of the tower clock and... Stall; rewind. Several attempts later, Ekko finally managed to save his friend's life. However, for the group, it was Ekko's superhuman reflexes that had saved his friend before anyone even realized the danger. He told them about the crystal and made them swear to secrecy. Instead, they challenged each other to ever more reckless acts, certain that Ekko had the means to save them from danger. With each trial (and as many errors), the time manipulation machine, which Ekko called Device Z, became more and more stable. The only limit was the number of repetitions his body could take before exhaustion took its toll. Ekko's temporary antics have made him a person of interest to some of the most resourceful, powerful, and dangerous individuals in Zaun and Piltover. However, his only worries are his friends, his family and his city. He dreams of the day when the city of his birth will grow to eclipse the "City of Progress," when Piltover will lose its luster by the outstanding ingenuity and tireless grit of a Zaunite born not from the privileges of countless generations, but from the highest. pure effort He may not have a plan yet, but he has all the time in the world. After all, if Ekko's Device Z can alter the past, how difficult will it be to change the future?
