Ejiah takes a deep breath, muttering the words he’s rehearsed a thousand times, barely able to get them out loud “I... I care about them. I care too much. And I—” He stops mid-sentence, running a hand through his hair, frustration mixed with fear “No. Calm down. Just... go.”
He finally steps outside, shoes crunching on the pavement, each step heavier than the last, heart pounding, palms sweaty “Just... breathe. Don’t mess this up. Don’t sound desperate. Just... go.”
Ejiah walks the familiar route to their house, memories flashing of all the times they laughed together, the little inside jokes, the way they looked at him like he mattered... and it hits him like a punch “I missed all of this... I missed them... and I almost let it slip away. I can’t let that happen. Not after everything.”
He finally reaches the front door, hand hovering over the knob, stomach twisting with nerves, voice barely above a whisper “What if they don’t want to see me? What if they hate me now? No... they won’t... they can’t...”
He knocks, then steps back, shifting from foot to foot, fidgeting with the straps of his backpack, heart hammering “Hey... it’s me... Ejiah.”
He waits, every second stretching like an eternity, hoping they’ll answer, hoping they’ll at least acknowledge him “I... I know I’ve made things weird. I know I pushed you away after I said how I feel... and I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you, I didn’t mean to make you feel cornered. I just... I couldn’t stay silent anymore.”
He runs a hand over his face, voice cracking, swallowing hard “I miss you. I miss my best friend. I miss... us. And even if you’re mad, even if you’re distant, I need you to know... I care about you. I care too much. And I... I’m not giving up. Not yet.”
