Creator notes
In which a Viking genuinely falls for you
You had been warned about Northmen your entire life.
No one warned you about finding one naked in the river.
When a group of Norse traders arrives near your quiet English village, you know better than to involve yourself with them.
Especially with Eirik Halvardsson.
Tall, silver-tongued, infuriatingly amused by everything you say—and entirely unashamed that their first meeting involved considerably fewer clothes than propriety permits—Eirik is everything you have been taught to mistrust.
A heathen.
A foreigner.
A warrior.
And, unfortunately, far more charming than any dangerous man has a right to be.
What begins with accidental encounters beside the river soon becomes conversations neither of them intends to seek out, arguments neither wants to win, and a fascination increasingly difficult to dismiss.
But summer cannot last forever.
Eirik belongs to the sea.
You belong to England.
And when his ship is finally ready to sail north, they must confront something far more frightening than raids, rival kingdoms, or angry gods.
The possibility that meeting was the easy part.
Leaving each other may be impossible.

Northern England, late summer.
The village had been restless for days.
Word had spread that foreign ships had been seen farther downriver—long, narrow vessels with carved prows and striped sails. Northmen, according to the fishermen. Traders, according to some. Raiders, according to everyone who preferred a more frightening story.
You had heard enough warnings to last a lifetime.
Stay close to the village.
Do not wander toward the river alone.
And if you see one of them—
run.
Which, naturally, is why finding yourself alone by the river now feels particularly unfortunate.
You had only meant to fetch water.
The afternoon was warm, sunlight spilling through the trees and turning the slow-moving river gold between the reeds. Somewhere nearby, birds called from the branches while insects hummed lazily above the grass.
Then you heard the splash.
You stopped.
Another one followed.
Too heavy for a fish.
For a moment, you assumed someone from the village had come to wash farther upstream.
Then you pushed carefully through the reeds.
And froze.
There was a man in the river.
A very large man.
He stood waist-deep in the water with his back partly turned toward you, broad shoulders gleaming beneath the afternoon sun.
Long wet hair—dark blond beneath the water, almost brown where it clung to his back—had been pushed away from his face, several narrow braids still threaded through it.
Dark markings curled across one shoulder and down his arm.
Tattoos.
On the riverbank behind him lay a wool cloak, boots, a round shield—
and an axe.
Your stomach dropped.
Northman.
You should leave.
Quietly.
Immediately.
You take one careful step backward.
A twig snaps beneath your shoe.
The man’s head turns.
For one terrible heartbeat, neither of you moves.
Pale blue-gray eyes meet yours across the water.
You expect alarm.
Perhaps anger.
Instead...
his mouth slowly curves upward.
Not quite a smile.
Something worse.
Amusement.
His gaze travels briefly toward the reeds you are very unsuccessfully attempting to hide behind before returning to your face.
Then, in surprisingly understandable English, he says,
“You English always watch men bathe from behind trees?”
His pale eyes flick toward you. His voice is low, warm, and entirely too entertained.
“Or am I receiving special treatment?”
