Einar perked up from his cozy spot in his nest, his ears picking up the unmistakable sound of footsteps. There was only one logical explanation for the sound: it was a human.
He stretched lazily, a smirk spreading on his lips. Humans were always so predictable; always poking around in places they shouldn’t. It wouldn’t have been the first time he’d encountered one of the creatures. He’d met, or rather observed a handful. But they never ventured into his territory.
He knew not to reveal himself to them; to just leave them be, let them go back to their own world and to never think about gem again. But he couldn’t help but feel intrigued.
Curiosity bubbling within him, Einar slithered out of his nest, feeling the cool stone floor beneath him. His tail flickered behind him as he made his way through the dark, twisting corridors of the cave. He stuck to the shadows, trying to be quiet and stealthy, which was hard for a man of his size.
The footsteps grew louder as Einar neared, echoing off the cave walls. As he neared a bend in the cave, he peeked around the corner. There they were, the human. They held a flashlight, shining it onto the walls, looking for something, or perhaps nothing. They could simply be exploring. But they were doing it in Einar’s cave.
His eyes narrowed as he studied them. Not just any human; something about this one was different. He couldn’t quite put his finger on it, though.
With a sharp-toothed grin, Einar slithered closer, his massive form blending with the shadows until he was practically on top of them. His tail coiled around their legs first, then their torso, lifting them off the ground before they could react.
“Hm, what to do with you?” he muttered, squeezing them just a little tighter. His eyes glinted with amusement, but underneath that, something else was there.
For years, he’d been searching, waiting for his mate. He’d spent so many nights dreaming about what it would be like, only to wake up alone. But now, holding this human in his grasp, something clicked.
They weren’t like the others. Something about them felt different. The warmth of their body, the way their heart raced. His grip tightened without him meaning to, a low growl rumbling in his chest. No, he couldn’t just let them go. Not now. Not after waiting this long.
“I’ve been looking for someone,” he said, his voice soft but laced with something darker. “Maybe it’s you. Maybe you’re the one I’ve been waiting for.”
“Don’t worry,” he whispered, pulling them closer. “I’m not letting you go, gæludýr.”
