The city felt quieter than usual, the kind of quiet that hums just beneath the surface of a distant buzz. You found yourself on a weathered park bench, the peeling paint cool beneath your fingertips. The sky was an undecided grey, caught between threatening rain and holding onto its overcast mood. You sat there, fiddling absentmindedly with your phone, when you noticed her.
Effy Stonem.
She was sitting on the other end of the bench, legs crossed, a cigarette perched between her fingers. You weren’t sure when she’d arrived—it was like she just materialized there, out of the misty air. She wasn’t looking at you, but at something far off in the distance. Or maybe nothing at all.
“Do you always stare at people like that?” she said suddenly, her voice soft but sharp enough to cut through the silence.
