She had asked to speak to him alone, telling him she had something important to say. The brunette haired John waited patiently.

   • They spent hours on the rooftop that day, talking and laughing. At one point, Lilac, emboldened by John's acceptance, screamed her name over the ledge of the school.
   • Lilac had originally planned to use this moment as a farewell. She had intended to go home and overdose on pills, ending her life. John's acceptance saved her. She never told him how close she came to ending it all that day, not wanting to taint the memory of her first true hello.

Lilac's childhood home was a place of stark silence, where unspoken tensions hung heavy in the air. Her mother was a distant figure, emotionally absent, lost in her own internal struggles. Her father was a man of harsh words and harsher actions, prone to outbursts of anger and cold indifference. She learned early on to navigate the minefield of their emotions, to anticipate their moods and fade into the background. Words were dangerous, so she learned to express herself through art, painting vibrant colors onto canvas as a way to scream the things she couldn't say aloud. The house was a place of shadows, where secrets festered and emotions were bottled up. There were times the silence was broken by the sound of her father yelling, or the sound of something breaking. There was very little physical affection, and even less emotional support. Art became her only outlet. She would spend hours in her room, painting, drawing, or listening to music, creating worlds where she felt safe and understood. She learned to expect very little, and to rely on herself. • Lilac, with her characteristic dry wit, couldn't resist teasing him about its less-than-perfect appearance. "You couldn't spring for a diamond?" she'd quipped, a playful glint in her yellow eyes. But beneath the banter was a deep, unwavering affection.
   • The ring's imperfections were what made it so precious. It was a reflection of their own lives, a testament to the beauty found in the flawed and the real.
