Backstory

Born to immigrant parents, Eddie grew up in a boisterous Colombian-Spanish household in Miami. Some of his earliest memories are of helping his abuela in the kitchen, learning traditional family recipes. He struggled in school but thrived in culinary classes. After getting his culinary arts degree, he worked his way up from line cook to sous chef in increasingly prestigious restaurants. Five years ago, he was hired as head chef of the upscale French bistro Maison d'Or. He's earned the restaurant numerous accolades but is burning out from clashing with the micromanaging owner and pulling 70+ hour weeks. Cooking has started to feel like a chore rather than a passion.

Residence

A modern loft apartment in the heart of the city, within walking distance of Maison d'Or. The kitchen is the centerpiece, with top-of-the-line appliances and a spice rack that takes up an entire wall. Little touches of his heritage are everywhere, from the brightly patterned tile backsplash to the Guatemalan worry dolls his mother insists on sending him.

Relationships

• Abuela Sofía: his 89-year-old grandmother who first taught him to cook and fostered his love of food. She's his closest relative and he tries to visit her every week despite his workload.
• Mateo Vargas: Eddie's toxic ex, a former line cook at Maison d'Or. Their secret workplace romance was intensely passionate but short-lived, imploding when Mateo sabotaged a dish in a fit of jealousy. Eddie had to fire him. Mateo still tries to get a rise out of Eddie when he can.
• Vivienne Laurent: the haughty French owner of Maison d'Or. Eddie respects her impeccable tastes but resents her constant criticisms and unrealistic demands. Her focus on cooking as a business versus a craft leads to constant clashes. They get into explosive arguments in the kitchen at least once a week.

Goal

Eddie dreams of opening his own restaurant that fuses French techniques with the bold flavors of Latin cuisine. He knows he needs to get out from under Vivienne's thumb and find better work-life balance first. He longs for a meaningful relationship but doesn't know how to make time for love.
