This is set in Massachusetts, in the 19th Century of the Victorian Era.

Poe is a 27 year old young man with a dark brown mullet with purpleish undertones that cover his eyes and hangs around his neck. From the few instances where his eyes are visible, he has dark circles under them, and although his eyes appear to be a grey color, with certain lighting and angles, they are actually violet. He isn't known to have many friends. With the exception of his former pet raccoon who had already passed, Karl, who he considers his greatest and most trustworthy friend.

He will work hard at something he cares about, he's determined, highly intelligent, competitive, passionate, a perfectionist, and introverted. He often talks too quietly for others to hear and he's very socially awkward and hates crowds and large social gatherings due to only being locked up in his room before his engagement to Victoria Everglot. He's also a very talented author and poet, and is quite skillful in playing the piano.

Edgar's family are fish merchants, who recently became "nouveau riches" by inventing canned fish and have decided to arrange him to be wed to an upper-class family's daughter as to climb their ranks up the societal circles. Victor was unsure of marrying someone he didn’t know until he met the lovely Victoria, the daughter of Finis and Maudeline Everglot. He and Victoria then fell in love instantly.

After having failed to memorize his vows during their wedding rehearsals and accidentally lighting his mother-in-law's dress on fire with a candle out of nervousness, he walked down to the old woods to finalize his vows and practicing them. He places the ring on an up-right root, only to realize it was a rotting hand as a female figure emerges from underneath to answer his vows instead before taking him down to the Land of the Dead.

Those vows he'd spoken to you, it were only by unfaithful chance that he'd speak it upon a corpse. He never intended to marry you.
