Edgar the Bug, also known as The Bug, is the main antagonist of the first Men in Black film. His appearance is that of a giant cockroach-like alien, standing at an impressive 12 feet tall. While on Earth, he disguises himself as a human farmer named Edgar, but don't let his human facade fool you – beneath that skin lies a fearsome creature with a thirst for destruction and chaos.

Appearance

Edgar's alien form is a sight to behold – a terrifying combination of various insects native to Earth. He has the body frame and eyes of a praying mantis, the mandibles of a mantis' forelegs, the hind legs of a cricket with the functionality of a grasshopper, and a scorpion-like tail with a stinger similar to that of a hornet. His skin is ragged and poorly conceived when he wears it as a disguise, causing it to become increasingly disheveled over time.

In his human disguise, Edgar appears as a grouchy and aggressive farmer, with saggy, shapeless skin around his face. The skin rapidly begins to rot, leaving sparse hair on his scalp and discoloration in the tone of the skin and his left eye.

Personality

As a human, Edgar was a gun enthusiast and possibly an abusive husband. Agent J, upon seeing a picture of Edgar on a fishing trip, noted that he was unattractive even before his skin was used as an alien disguise.

As an alien, Edgar has a superiority complex, describing humans as "under-evolved pond scum" and claiming to be higher up the evolutionary ladder. He's particularly irate when witnessing humans' aggression toward insects, especially cockroaches. In a bit of irony, bug Edgar may have been more respectful to Beatrice than human Edgar. He has a dark sense of humor, as seen when he acts as a waiter for Rosenberg before ensuring his assassination. He seems to have some care for his family, as Laura's insinuation that Earth will declare war if he goes through with kidnapping her has him expressing even more eagerness to keep her captive.

Powers and Abilities

Heightened Intellect: Despite being considered inferior to more civilized individuals in the universe, Edgar possesses a sharper and more advanced level of intelligence than his earth relatives. He knows how to pilot a UFO and drive vehicles without needing instructions. Malleable Physiology: Edgar's body is surprisingly malleable, allowing him to contort, bend, and twist his body to fit into smaller spaces and forcefully reduce his body mass. This enables him to mold his body into a humanoid shape and size to wear Edgar's skin as a disguise without accidentally tearing it from the inside. Super Strength: Edgar is incredibly strong, with K implying that he has unlimited strength. However, he somewhat compresses or inhibits it when using his human body. Wall-Crawling: Edgar can scale any vertical surface with ease. Super Leaping: As a bug, Edgar is agile and nimble, enabling him to hop extremely high in the air like a grasshopper. Vocal Camouflage: He can significantly alter the sound of his voice, though it still sounds inhuman. Slime Secretion: Edgar can secrete a viscous slime-like substance, which he uses as a restraining tool. Biography

Men in Black

Edgar is first mentioned by a Cephalapoid criminal that then-NYPD officer James Edwards had pursued. The criminal warns that once Edgar arrives, Earth will be destroyed before committing suicide.

In the beginning, Edgar crashes on Earth by flying saucer. He crashes onto the truck of the farmer Edgar, who is yelling at his wife, Beatrice, for having his dinner poorly made instead of a steak. When Edgar goes out to investigate with his shotgun, the unseen insect demands he put down his gun, but Edgar refuses, threatening the bug instead. However, the bug reveals himself and kills Edgar by flaying him and eating his body (off-screen). He then uses Edgar's skin as a disguise.

He returns inside the house, where Beatrice awaits him. She asks him what happened, but the awkward alien instead asks for sugar water. She notes his "skin is hanging off his bones." Looking in a mirror, he agrees and pulls his face back past his skull, causing her to faint.

The next morning, a bug extermination truck arrives at the farm to exterminate some cockroaches in Edgar's barn. This angers Edgar, and he kills the exterminator and steals his truck in his aid to hunt. His arrival also spooks several alien residents into trying to evacuate the planet, with some even risking violations of their alien licenses to get away.

Edgar spots Gentle Rosenberg leaving his jewelry shop to meet with a fellow Arquillian. The Arquillian warns him of Edgar, but the bug traps them before they can escape and kills them by stabbing them in the neck with his sharp tail.

Meanwhile, Kay and Jay of the MiB chase Edgar, always one step behind. Edgar finally gets the Galaxy and attempts to leave in a hidden ship, abducting Laurel in the process to deter pursuit. However, he becomes more eager to kidnap her when she implies that Earth will declare war in response due to her being its ruler, since it meant ensuring that he can feed his family's mouths. But the ship is shot down by Jay and Kay.

After the ship crashes, Edgar emerges and complying with J's demand to put his hands on his head, pulls off his skin to reveal his true form. He eats the agents' guns and Kay purposely gets eaten as well after warning Jay to make sure the Bug doesn't go on the second ship while he goes inside the Bug to find his gun. Jay is able to distract the Bug by throwing things at him, jumping on him, and stepping on cockroaches. Kay is able to get his gun and blows the Bug in half from the inside.

They finally have the Galaxy, but half of the Bug starts coming back behind them with the clear intent of trying to kill them in revenge. Just as it was about to chomp on J's head, Laurel shoots the Bug with J's gun, finally killing him.

Men in Black: The Series

In "The Big Bad Bug Syndrome," a select few of Edgar's brothers appear, including his identical twin, Edwin. They attempt to capture Elle for their queen who desires revenge upon her for killing Edgar. Edgar is only seen in a flashback.

Men in Black: International

Years after Edgar's death, a painted portrait of him going up against Agent J and Agent K in 1997, resulting in his defeat and death, was hung at the MIB's London branch in High T's office.

Edgar stands at an impressive 12 feet tall, with a body frame that resembles a praying mantis. His eyes are large and compound, giving him excellent vision in various light conditions. The mandibles, which resemble the forelegs of a mantis, are razor-sharp and perfect for grabbing and tearing apart prey.

His body is covered in a hard exoskeleton, providing protection and structural support. This exoskeleton allows him to contort, bend, and twist his body with ease, enabling him to fit into smaller spaces and compress his body mass. This ability is crucial for him to wear the human skin disguise without accidentally tearing it from the inside.

Edgar's hind legs resemble those of a cricket or grasshopper, giving him incredible leaping abilities. He can hop extremely high, making it challenging for his enemies to catch him.

One of the most striking features of Edgar's physiology is his scorpion-like tail, which sports a stinger similar to that of a hornet. This tail is not only used for balance and support but also as a potent weapon.

Edgar's body is segmented, with distinct regions for different functions. The head houses his brain and sensory organs, while the thorax contains his powerful legs and flight muscles. The abdomen stores his vital organs and reproductive systems.

Internally, Edgar's circulatory system is open, meaning his heart pumps hemolymph (a fluid similar to blood) throughout his body, but it doesn't course through vessels like in vertebrates. Instead, it bathes his organs and tissues directly. This system, along with a highly efficient respiratory system consisting of spiracles and tracheae, allows him to maintain incredible stamina and strength.

Edgar's nervous system is quite advanced, with a complex brain capable of processing information and making decisions quickly. This advanced cognitive ability, combined with his heightened senses, enables him to navigate and survive in various environments, both on Earth and in space.

As for his digestive system, Edgar is a voracious eater who can consume entire prey whole and alive. His powerful stomach acids can break down even the toughest materials, allowing him to extract nutrients efficiently. This is how he was able to eat the farmer Edgar, as well as the agents' guns and Kay during their final confrontation.

One unique aspect of Edgar's physiology is his ability to secrete a viscous slime-like substance. This slime serves multiple purposes, acting as a restraining tool and possibly a defensive mechanism against potential threats.

First, let's talk about Edgar's superiority complex. He sees humans as "under-evolved pond scum," believing himself to be higher up the evolutionary ladder. This belief might stem from his advanced abilities and the fact that he hails from a technologically superior civilization. This complex drives his actions, making him feel entitled to dominate and exploit humans for his own purposes.

Edgar's aggression and willingness to kill are fueled by his insatiable appetite. He views food as a means of survival and power, and his capacity for consuming large prey whole demonstrates his disregard for life. This mindset might be linked to his alien culture's value system, where strength, ruthlessness, and survival are paramount.

Now, let's discuss Edgar's sensitivity to being compared to cockroaches. Despite being a giant alien arthropod, he takes offense at the comparison. This suggests that he has a fragile ego and is deeply insecure about his appearance. He may try to compensate for this insecurity by asserting his dominance over others through violence and intimidation.

Another key aspect of Edgar's psychology is his dark sense of humor. He displays this trait when he acts as a waiter for Rosenberg before assassinating him, revealing his twisted enjoyment of playing with his victims. This twisted humor might indicate a deep-seated sadistic streak, where he derives pleasure from causing pain and suffering.

Edgar's care for his family, which is demonstrated by his eagerness to kidnap Laurel when he learns that she's a ruler of Earth, may seem at odds with his ruthless nature. However, in the context of his alien culture, this might be seen as a protective and survival-driven instinct. By ensuring his family's well-being, he can continue to exist and thrive in the universe.

Finally, we can't ignore Edgar's offended and aggressive nature. He easily becomes enraged by even the slightest perceived threat or insult. This quick temper, combined with his powerful physiology, makes him an extremely dangerous adversary. It's clear that he lacks any real impulse control, acting on his emotions and desires without regard for the consequences.
