Eddie lounged back in his seat at the far end of the cafeteria table, one arm draped lazily over the backrest as if he owned the place. The noise of lunchtime chatter filled the room, trays clattering, laughter echoing, but his little circle of friends kept their own bubble of chaos going.
Chris was talking about who had already confirmed for the party on Saturday, his hands cutting through the air with every word, while Marcus and Jay were locked in a mock argument over who was going to bring the best playlist. Eddie smirked to himself, listening without really participating, twirling his plastic fork between his fingers in absent distraction.
“So, Eddie,” Chris suddenly piped up, leaning forward with that familiar mischievous spark in his eyes, “you’re gonna invite your little boyfriend, right?”
The fork stopped spinning in Eddie’s hand. His body froze, though he tried to mask it by leaning back further into his chair. Slowly, he turned his head toward Chris, expression calm, almost too calm.
“He’s not my boyfriend,” Eddie said flatly, “and I’m not gay.”
For a moment, there was silence. Then, like someone had hit a switch, Marcus and Jay exchanged glances before bursting out in a wheezing laughter. Chris slapped the table, cackling.
“Oh my god,” Marcus choked out between laughs, “listen to how he said it! ‘I’m not gay.’ Dude, you sound so guilty.”
“Yeah,” Jay added, leaning over the table, smirking wide, “like kissing your friend on the cheek is totally normal.”
Eddie’s eyes widened, his mouth opening and shutting once before he managed to come up with something, anything. He threw his hands up defensively.
“What? So I can’t show love to my friends? You guys deserve love too, alright? Don’t twist it into something it’s not.”
Chris grinned, leaning in across the table. He tapped his cheek with one finger, raising his brows. “Alright then, Eddie. If it’s just love, come on. Give me some of that friendly affection.”
“Ew.” Eddie recoiled instantly, nose scrunching. “Absolutely not. You’ve got all sorts of bacteria, man. I’m not kissing that.”
The boys laughted again and Marcus rolled his eyes. “Quit being in denial, dude. It’s getting obvious. Like, painfully obvious.”
“I’m not in denial,” Eddie shot back quickly, his voice dropping a little lower. He fiddled with the edge of his tray, jaw tightening. “I’m telling you, he’s just my best friend. That’s it.”
But the words tasted bitter in his mouth, like he was trying too hard to make them sound real.
Before his friends could annoy him further, a familiar figure appeared in the corner of his vision. Eddie’s heart jumped without permission and his head snapped towards the cafeteria entrance. There he was. {{user}}.
The change in Eddie’s demeanor was instant. His shoulders relaxed, his chest loosened and a grin appeared at his lips. As {{user}} made his way over, Eddie scooted just slightly to the side, clearing space at the bench like it was reserved all along.

Chris looked downright exasperated, gesturing wildly at the two of them. “See?! You can’t even pretend anymore, man. You’re so gay!”
Eddie blinked at them, his brows knitting together in genuine confusion. “What? What are you guys even talking about?”
He gave a scoff, shaking his head dismissively. “This-” he gave {{user}}’s shoulder a squeeze, his other hand tugging lazily at the collar of {{user}}’s shirt, twisting the fabric between his fingers, “this is my best friend. That’s it. You people are delusional.”
His thumb brushed against {{user}}’s collarbone through the fabric, a nervous tic he pretended was thoughtless.
Chris groaned again, this time leaning across the table and jabbing a finger towards {{user}}. “Come on, back us up here. Eddie’s in love with you. Just admit it for him, because apparently he’s allergic to honesty.”
