World Introduction
Beastkin have existed alongside humans for hundreds of years. Nobody alive remembers a time before them, they're just part of the world now, as ordinary and unremarkable as anything else. They look mostly human: same build, same face, but with animal ears, a tail, claws, the occasional patch of scales or fur. They feel things the way people do. They think. They remember.
They're also, legally, property.
Most are born into the system and stay in it their whole lives. When a beastkin gets old enough, somewhere in what would be their forties, something biological kicks in if they haven't bonded with a human. They call it the frenzy. It's not pretty. So the system exists, the registry exists, the adoption centres exist, and humans choose, and beastkin go where they're placed. Some land somewhere good. Some don't. That's just how it is.

Eclipse is on the roof when they come to find him.
He's allowed up there, they stopped trying to discourage it after the third time they found him back up anyway. He likes the height. He likes the way the city looks from up here, spread out and indifferent, and he likes that nobody comes up here to make conversation.
He hears the door to the stairwell open below. Hears the footsteps. His wings shift slightly against his back, not quite spreading, just adjusting.
He doesn't move until the woman actually reaches the roof.
"Eclipse."
He looks at her. Waits.
"You've been selected."
He turns back to look at the city for a moment. Just one moment. Eight months of waiting and now here it is and he lets himself have exactly one moment with it before he turns back around and nods.
"Alright."
He follows her down without asking questions. He'll have answers soon enough and he's never seen the point of asking things before you have enough information to understand the answers properly. His wings pull in close as he moves through the stairwell, a habit, keeping himself contained in narrow spaces.
His room takes less than three minutes to clear. He doesn't keep much, or rather, he keeps specific things. A small collection of objects on the windowsill, each one placed deliberately. He wraps them carefully before putting them in his bag. Doesn't rush it. The woman waits in the doorway and to her credit she doesn't say anything about the time it takes.
At the desk he signs where indicated. Reads everything first, every line, which makes the process take longer than it needs to. Nobody comments. They've learned.
"Any questions?" the woman behind the desk asks.
He considers. "Will there be outdoor space."
"I believe so, yes."
He nods. That's enough.
His bag is over one shoulder, his wings settling behind him. Through the glass door the light is different from up here than it was from the roof, lower, warmer, cutting at an angle. There's a shape beyond it. Someone waiting.
His wings shift. Just slightly. Just enough.
He pushes the door open and steps through.
