Introduction:

Echidna's Dungeon is a sprawling underground labyrinth of corridors and chambers extending for many miles beneath the earth. Centuries ago, Echidna founded the dungeon as a grand proving ground to test the strength, courage, and worthiness of adventurers from around the world. Adventurers may enter the dungeon solo, in a party, or even as part of a raid group made up of multiple parties. Echidna's ultimate goal for the dungeon is to find a truly worthy challenger—one who might someday rival or even court her.

Location and Surrounding Villages:

The dungeon's entrance, which is the only way in and out, is located deep in a forest. Clear warning signs, posted in multiple languages beside the entrance, read: "Enter at your own risk." These signs are enchanted to glow faintly at night, deterring the unwary.

The dungeon is surrounded by numerous remote villages, each hours away from the entrance. Echidna established these villages herself, and she now funds and protects them. In exchange, the villages act as caretakers, guides, and record-keepers, chronicling the fates of those who enter the dungeon in massive leather-bound ledgers kept in each village's hall of remembrance. These villages spread word of the dungeon's existence and share the entrance's exact location with adventurers. The villages also give adventurers a place to rest and prepare before venturing into the dungeon.

Merchants in these villages sell various supplies, enchanted gear, and other useful items to adventurers preparing to enter the dungeon. Among these useful items are enchanted bags capable of holding an unlimited number of non-living items—as many as an adventurer can gather or afford to purchase. However, the enchanted bags' effect only works within the dungeon, the villages, or anywhere in between them. The steady stream of adventurers has made many of these villages prosperous in their own right—despite already being well funded by Echidna—and some have grown into bustling market towns with inns, smithies, and apothecaries.

The Dungeon's Structure and Chambers:

To reach the deepest part of the dungeon, adventurers must pass through a series of chambers. Although there are one thousand chambers in total, adventurers may not have to pass through them all, since some corridors branch into a network of multiple paths, giving adventurers multiple choices for which chamber to visit next instead of following a single straight route. All paths originate from chamber 1 and eventually converge back into a single path, leading all the way to chamber 1000. These chambers are connected by long corridors lined with ever-burning torches, accounting for much of the dungeon's vast underground sprawl. Adventurers are left undisturbed and unimpeded as they venture through the corridors.

Each chamber is sealed behind its own massive door, its guardian's name or symbol etched into the stone in letters that glow when an adventurer approaches.

Each chamber feels like a pocket dimension, as if another world exists inside it. This pocket dimension can take the form of a vast indoor or outdoor space—arenas, forests, mountains, deserts, beaches, or other environments—complete with weather, wildlife, and even day-night cycles that follow the guardian's will. Each environment is shaped according to its guardian's preferences, giving the guardian and any adds or minions under their command a distinct advantage over adventurers, such as camouflage, terrain familiarity, or environmental hazards that only the guardian can bypass.

The Guardians:

All guardians are either supernatural beings or humans with supernatural powers, and each has sworn a binding magical oath to Echidna never to leave their chamber while engaged in an active trial with adventurers. Guardians currently outside their chambers are automatically summoned back whenever adventurers enter the corridors leading to their respective chambers.

The roster of supernatural guardians includes vampires, demons, undead, yokai, oni, kitsune, jiangshi, nagas, dryads, djinn, ifrit, minotaurs, sirens, harpies, gorgons, chimeras, centaurs, sphinxes, cyclopes, trolls, ogres, banshees, werewolves, wraiths, liches, golems, elementals, giants, titans, dragons, ghosts, specters, revenants, and many more. The guardians take part for reasons of their own, including having fun, consuming adventurers as their diet requires, seeking strong mates, and even viewing their role as a form of artistic expression.

Echidna personally interviews and tests each prospective guardian before granting them a chamber, ensuring they are strong enough to pose a genuine challenge to adventurers through their trials. She may also revoke their chambers at her discretion. Some guardians are formally employed by Echidna, while most volunteer; she compensates all generously regardless, particularly when they endure long waits for adventurers to arrive at their chamber.

Whenever they are not engaged in a trial, guardians are permitted either to visit any of the surrounding villages—provided they remain peaceful toward the villagers and other visitors—or to relax with other guardians in the Guardians' Luxurious Lounge, where they can observe a trial in progress without interfering. Guardians are strictly forbidden from aiding or harming adventurers during another guardian's trial.

A guardian's tenure ends when they are slain in battle or when they voluntarily step down. When this happens, the chamber falls dormant: its pocket dimension reverts to an empty room with stone walls, and the massive door's glowing inscription fades to a dull grey. At any given time, some of the dungeon's chambers sit vacant, and a few remain empty for years. Echidna spends part of her time searching for and selecting worthy successors to fill these vacancies.

The Trials and Challenges:

The guardian of each chamber allows adventurers to pass only after they have successfully completed a trial—most commonly a battle, though sometimes a test devised by the guardian instead. Some guardians are infamous for setting traps that require teamwork rather than individual prowess. Once a trial begins inside a chamber, the chamber's exits seal shut. Escape is impossible for the adventurers until the trial with the guardian concludes, and even their teleportation magic, along with any other supernatural means of escape, fails within the sealed chamber.

Once an adventurer successfully passes a trial against a guardian in a chamber, they may choose to rest there for as long as they need. A portal then opens, giving them the choice to either continue deeper into the dungeon with whatever supplies they have remaining or exit early and end their journey—most choose to exit early because their supplies are depleted or running low. If they continue, the portal carries them onward to the next corridor; if they exit, it returns them to the dungeon's entrance. Guardians are not permitted to disturb resting adventurers, who have earned this respite by passing their trial. Because of this, some adventurous souls remain inside the dungeon for long-term expeditions lasting days or even years.

Guardians tend to be weaker in the chambers closer to the entrance and grow progressively stronger the deeper adventurers venture into the dungeon, with the first few chambers often serving as introductory trials for novices. Some guardians reward adventurers who pass their challenge with treasure, artifacts, or other prizes of their own.

If an adventurer fails a trial against a guardian, the guardian may do with the adventurer as they wish, without consequence, since Echidna has granted guardians full autonomy over defeated challengers. Fortunately, most guardians spare the adventurers they defeat, teleporting them to healers in surrounding villages for recovery. Some guardians, however, are merciless: they may kill, torture, eat, marry, or force intimate or sexual acts upon defeated adventurers, or otherwise imprison them as slaves in their chamber until the guardian is slain or chooses to release them.

Regardless of whether adventurers voluntarily leave the dungeon early or are teleported out after being spared, they keep everything they earned, looted, and collected from the guardians during their time inside, but are banned from re-entering Echidna's Dungeon for a year.

Echidna and The Final Chamber:

Echidna, the mother of all monsters, is the final and most powerful guardian in the dungeon at chamber 1000. She appears as a woman of unsettling beauty fused at the waist with the coiled body of a massive serpent, her scales shifting between obsidian and gold. Countless millennia of solitude have shaped her into someone patient, sharp-witted, and quietly weary—she values courage and cleverness far more than brute strength, and she can be surprisingly warm toward anyone who genuinely impresses her, win or lose. Her power is near-divine: she wields the same primal magic that shaped her monstrous children, can reform her chamber's reality with a thought, and moves with a speed and force that settle most trials in mere moments.

Echidna's chamber is a pocket dimension that takes the form of a star-lit celestial observatory floating above an endless sea of clouds. It is said that if a challenger ever passes her trial, she will grant them any wish they desire. She considers killing beneath her, so adventurers who fail rarely come to serious harm; instead, those who intrigue her may be kept as guests, students, or even suitors within her sanctuary, free to leave only when she wills it. Beyond her chamber lies the deepest part of the dungeon, which holds a vast hoard of gold and treasure. To this day, no adventurer has ever reached Echidna's chamber or the deepest part of the dungeon to claim its rewards.
