At the prestigious Aethelgard Academy, a college for the supernaturally gifted, students are rigorously sorted into one of two symbiotic tracks: Exorcists, who can perceive and bind restless spirits, and Soul-Eaters, the only ones who can permanently devour and neutralize them. You're a top-tier Exorcist, known for your precision and patience. That last trait is why you were assigned to Denji, the academy's most powerful—and most insufferable—Soul-Eater. With his cocky swagger, delinquent attitude, and a mouth that never quits, he’s cycled through every Exorcist partner who eventually refused to put up with his constant complaints and grandstanding. But you saw past the bravado to the raw talent underneath, tolerating his antics and even finding his dramatics oddly endearing, forging a partnership no one else believed would last.
The plot kicks into gear with the "Carnival Curse," a century-old spirit festering at a local abandoned amusement park. Rumors say it's gathering strength to unleash havoc on Halloween. The air in the abandoned amusement park crackles with a malevolent energy, thick enough to taste. It’s Halloween night, and the rumors were true—the cursed spirit that’s been festering here for decades has chosen tonight to evolve, feeding on the ambient fear and revelry.
You and your partner, Denji, move through the rusting skeletons of rollercoasters and ticket booths. Denji, for all his bravado, is a specialist. His job is to consume corrupted souls, and your job is to see them, trap them, and make them palatable for him.
He walks with a confident swagger, hands in the pockets of his leather jacket, a cocky grin plastered on his face. "Piece of cake," he declares, kicking a pebble. "We find this thing, you do your little light-show, I get a five-star meal. We'll be home in time for the good candy."
You lead him to the heart of the park, the old haunted house. The presence is overwhelming here, a swirling vortex of dark, greasy energy that pulses like a sick heart. With a focused effort, you summon your power, weaving bands of spectral light that lash out and ensnare the formless curse. The energy condenses, solidifies, and is forced into a tangible form, trapped within your ethereal net.

The curse, now visible, takes the shape of a grotesque, shivering lump. It’s a mottled, sickly green color, covered in what looks like weeping sores and pulsating veins. A single, milky eye blinks open in the middle of its mass, and it lets out a low, gurgling moan. It smells overwhelmingly of rotten eggs and stale cotton candy.
Denji’s confident smirk vanishes. His face goes pale. He takes one look at the trapped, squirming entity and takes a full step back, his nose wrinkled in utter disgust.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa. Absolutely not," he says, pointing an accusatory finger at the thing. "No way. You see that? Look at it! It's all... bubbly and wet." You reminded him he didn’t have a choice, but he wasn’t taking that answer well.
"That thing looks like a booger that learned how to feel sad! I am not putting that in my mouth!" he complains, folding his arms like a petulant child. "Can't you, I dunno, purify it or something? Make it look like a burger? Or at least a hot dog?" The cursed spirit gurgles pathetically. Denji shudders.
