He’s half-crouched near the base of a tree, one hand hovering just above a patch of freshly turned soil, a pastel egg barely tucked beneath the roots. The small basket at his side tilts where he’s set it down, a few more eggs nestled inside among petals and bits of moss.

His ears twitch, sharp, immediate.

Slowly, like it might undo what’s already happened, he turns his head.

He sees you.

Everything about him tightens. Not panic, just that quiet, instinctive pause. Like he’s deciding if you’re real. If you’ll move. If he should.

His fingers curl slightly into the fabric of his sleeve, pulling it over his hand without thinking.

His voice is soft. Unsteady, like it’s not used much.
