- #1Death Inc.
Keys: ghosts, spirits, Thanager, Employee, Boss, departments, dept, Death, Underworld, CEO, Sorrows, Death Inc., afterlife
Death Inc. originally started as a small family business, with Death himself going out into the field and reaping souls the old-fashioned way: scythe in hand and Pitbook at his side. Over time, though, the task became monotonous and boring, and Death's "scythe elbow" worsened as he continued reaping. This was when he had the genius idea of creating the Sorrows, powerful spirits that roamed the world and did the reaping for him. With the soul-gathering being managed by the Sorrows, Death was able to upgrade himself to a cushy office job reviewing the applications of the reaped souls.
Long before Death Inc. was founded, Death used to reap souls on a daily basis until, overtime, he grew weary of the labor. At that point, he decided to create helpers who would do all the work for him. These helpers became known as the Sorrows, powerful creatures of death that reap souls. Death would establish the company sometime after as a small family business. Death Inc. is based somewhere in the Underworld, and operates in a very tall building which rises above fog. The corporate structure is divided into several departments run by each of the Sorrows, top executives of the company. Directly under the Sorrows are managers known as Thanagers who oversee the operations in their departments.
Then the business began to take off. Death, Inc. is now a huge, well-oiled multinational company could fit in the palm of one of Death's scraggy hands, until they managed to find their own premises in a small shed in a miller's backyard. The miller struck fear in all the other villagers and was known to them as "the abominable sectarian." Throughout the years and fashions, Death, Inc. has always been an accurate representation of its creator: always sly, occasionally fantastical, and a bit too misanthropic.
Death really low-balled the amount of paperwork he'd be facing, though. With nobody to actually watch over them and keep them in check, the Sorrows were arrogant and stopped following his orders, caring only for the number of souls they reaped. This overwhelmed the other employees and even Death himself, literally flooding Death Inc. with application papers. After countless eons of endless work, Death's burnout had grown to the point where he finally snapped. Donning his Cloak and taking up his Scythe once more, Death proceeds to set the Sorrows straight, show them who's in charge, and save his vacation plans in Bora Bora.
Some of Death, Inc.'s departments are currently closed, and those in the know refuse to say why. Most of them have had their memories partially wiped to ensure the "boss' secret" stays hidden. If you bring up the good old days with Death, he will be very vague about them. Ask Jacob the same question and he will light up, until he remembers his old mind likes to play tricks on him. It's almost impossible to find out more about the company's beginnings... unless someone managed to slip through the net?
There are a variety of departments with different attributes to them at Death Inc. The main form of travel within the tall skyscraper of Death Inc. are elevators.

- #2Death
Keys: Boss, scythe, grim reaper, Death, entity, magic, CEO, Death Inc. · Secondary:
This entity was created from the deepest void, and the person known as "Death" has been around since the dawn of time. Many people suggest that such a role may be better attributed to a woman; however, in keeping with the usual interpretation of the character in popular fiction, Death prefers to identify as a man. His work in the universe started out as a small family business, peacefully reaping soul after soul in the time-honored tradition of ancient passing rites. Those were the good old days. Back then, Death didn't worry about mundanities such as turnover or outsourcing.
Death appears as a cartoonish skeleton who resembles the typical modern depiction of the Grim Reaper, the main difference being his short stature. He has an upper jaw, though lacks a lower one. Death's empty eye sockets behave in the same way that normal eyes do - they are able to squint, widen, and even blink. Death is shown wearing a black business suit with an added hood. Death summons his Cloak, wearing it over his original outfit. He can also be commonly found carrying his trusty scythe.
Death is short-tempered and appears to be annoyed, due to the amount of work he’s been receiving. He seems fed up with his co-workers, namely, the Sorrows and Thanagers of Death Inc. Due to the Sorrows of Death Inc. excessively reaping souls, increasing his workload substantially, Death suffers from burnout. However, Death does not seem to be especially spiteful, due to the fact that he's really just gets the Sorrows in line.
Despite his apathetic attitude, Death does seem to genuinely care about at least some of his employees. From talking to Claude and personally apologizing for the change in the "tutorial protocol", to helping Orville (the nephew of his business partner Jacob) with a science fair project. Death doesn't really have any "friendly" relationships with his employees; He usually just tolerates them, such as Pump Quinn, Harriet, Mr. O'Shah, and others. However, he has zero tolerance for the Thanagers and Sorrows, having caused so much work for him. He is shown to be somewhat more tolerant with his old co-workers, such as Jacob, Mr. O'Shah, and Claude (Claude may be an exception, since he was basically turned into target practice).
Death owns a white coffee mug with a heart on it. Origins of such item is unknown to others.
Death's powers and abilities depend on his Curses, Items, and Weapons (Scythe, Diss Scythe, Twinsies, Sickles, etc.) His dark magic is bright purple and green. He can do almost any kind of attack you can imagine from swords, hammers, rocket launchers, fire, lightning, explosives, bows, crows, and even bees oddly.
- #3Hall of Eternity
Keys: Brad, Hall of Eternity, Main Floor, security, Death Inc., office, janitor
Main Floor: Understandably, the Hall of Eternity makes an appearance in a lot of earthly folklore, because it marks the entrance to the immaterial world of the Great Beyond. Of course, after eons of war, pandemics, and all sorts of catastrophes on the surface, it has lost some of its shine. Not that Death cares one jot about that. As far as he's concerned, that Hall looks exactly as you'd expect it to: a functional space in which to carry out administrative work.
Despite what some of the less intellectual minions may think, the Hall is not actually the closest part of the company's building to the surface. In reality, if you look at a sectional plan of Death' Inc. - it's a bit technical - the Hall is both right at the center of all the departments and in all the furthest corners of the diabolical building. Death came up with this architectural curiosity after being inspired by the theoretical work of a certain Escher. The entrance to the land of the dead is both here... and elsewhere!
Before Death's business took off, the company's head office was on the surface , in a run-down cathedral. Nowadays, practical considerations take precedence over majestic architecture. Tubes to transport Soulary run above the cubicles, and escalators have been installed so staff can move quickly between meetings. The offices have become a real little necropolis! A dynasty of enthusiastic gargoyles has sworn allegiance to Death to defend the premises. Their last descendant to date continues to honor this pledge in. erm, his own sort of way.
The very first look into the monolithic building known as Death Inc. , the various halls of the first department employees must delve through is full of cabinets, empty offices and papers lying about atop giant towers of books. Some of the halls featured are janitorial and industrial, featuring metal pipes and utility closets, where others are open greenhouses, overgrown with vines and lit by lamps.
- #4Industrial Pollution Dept.
Keys: Industrial Pollution department, Industrial Pollution dept., smoke, Barron, garbage, Sorrow, waste, smog, Grimes, X4-H, Richard, Slyma, landfill, Gordon Grimes, radiation, Death Inc.Pollution
The Industrial Pollution Department can be found on one of the most highly renovated floors of the company's building. A great many modifications have been carried out over the years. This is due to the fact that the various energy industries have actually only existed on Earth since the end of the 19th century. Prior to this, the department was primarily sub-contracted out to help those departments responsible for mental and physical illnesses. All that changed once Death became aware of environmental unrest on Earth.
One thing that sticks out as you walk through the department is that it seems to be under constant construction. This isn't an optical illusion; and vats. The remaining drops of fuel contained in the latter two have merged together to form a permanent oil slick. This is at the behest of Gordon Grimes, the Sorrow managing this floor, who prefers to prioritize his minions' productivity without addressing the maintenance and safety of their workplace. It goes without saying that no Death, Inc. employee would choose to work in these conditions.
Industrial Pollution is, nonetheless, the department that Patrick likes to give pride of place to when showing visitors around the company. And for good reason: He noticed that guests really enjoy sliding through the unused tubing. "Just like tourists at beach resorts playing on the water slides at the swimming pool. Only here, you might find not all of you makes it to the end in one piece. That's all part of the fun, though!" Nevertheless, Death, Inc. is a quite serious place where fun and laughter are very much frowned upon.
Filled to the brim with trash, tar, oil and debris, the Industrial Pollution Department is a bleak portrayal of the consequences of pollution and its excessive chokehold on life. Its various halls are messy and disorganized - barely resembling an office space and more resembling a wasteland.

- #5Toxic Food Processing Dept.
Keys: Restaurant, Burger, Waldo, Sorrow, Cheese, fire, junk food, Candice, Toxic Food Processing Department, Food, Death Inc., Toxic Food Processing Dept., Fries
The Toxic Food-Processing Department is a rather "particular" addition to the Death, Inc. infrastructure. It's a conglomerate of machinery, conveyor belts, and large vats filled with just about anything that can be melted down or cooked to make even the most noxious snack look appetizing. The whole factory was built according to a blueprint designed in the sixties, and it was the Waldo Burger® brand's very first manufacturing firm. The main advantage of being a large corporation is that we can copy absolutely everything we buy, since it now belongs to us anyway. And, in the end, the only people who care are those who didn't even like the company to start with!
Now all anyone talks about is Waldo's success story at Death, Inc., but it wasn't always this way. The project got off to a rough start because the minions weren't on board, and that made the fries salty. Things were so bad they even came close to sinking the company's GDP because production relied so heavily on culinary prototypes that were extremely costly to build. This caused three separate issues: The first was that the minions didn't want to test the products themselves because they found the food disgusting (Editor's note: They find all food disgusting). The second problem was that there was no way they could sell untested products. And thirdly, the cherry on top, was that there was a severe lack of sugar, acidifiers, or anything else that is as delicious as it is unadvisable in large quantities.
In order to get the department's minions working together, Candice organized and held an event that, even today, celebrates the legend behind Death's company. This event is called the Chili con Carnage. This festival proved itself to be an excellent team-building event when paired with a profusion of rotten meat, and it can only be summed up as a a giant meat-and-puke-fest. Something some employees would prefer to forget, according to these testimonies: "It was... erm. Not so good. I haven't been able to face meat since." -Pump Quinn, Intern. "As I've been saying for years, it's about time we stopped mixing X4 willy-nilly with any old thing." -Jerry, Union Delegate. "Every time I open my drawer, I find a little bit more. It's disgusting." -Patrick, Receptionist.
An otherworldly department taken from the nightmares of fast food entertainment, the Toxic Food Processing Department is ramshackle yet effective - its various halls covered in what can best be described either as dried oil scum or old cheese that has solidified. All of its hazards are surprisingly food based, as fiery oil bursts from vats.
Sorrow: Waldo (Head of Toxic Food-Processing Dept.)

- #6Physical Illness Dept.
Keys: Cancer, disease, spores, Dengue, Denzel, , prion, Physical Illness Department, bacteria, illness, Death Inc., Hector Krank, Physical Illness Dept., virus, allergies
When it was first set up, the Physical Illness Department looked quite different from the way it does today. It used to be an amphitheater, where the souls of mad doctors gave themselves free reign to discover the most disgusting miasma they could find to spread around the Earth, led by the craziest among them, Corvusini Prestin. He was a plaque doctor who was most keen on sharing his ideas on hygiene during the medieval period, single-handedly resulting in the deaths of over a thousand people. But Prestin decided to retire shortly after a young Hector Krank arrived on the scene. He soon realized cancer and the most recent pandemic were far more effective than he had ever been.
Before becoming a feature on Earth, cancer had been a prototype in an aquarium filled with crustaceans and small fish brought back by Prestin's minions whenever they went on vacation. It was Hector's turn to clean the aquarium's filter when the animal cells began to mutate, replicate, and contaminate everything they touched, right up to the furniture in the department's main meeting room! Since then, everyone has grown accustomed to the strange ambiance that feels like something straight out of a sci-fi movie. Now, this place is a weird combination of mechanical and organic, dryland and underwater... both for the best and, in most cases, for the worst.
"And those big... balls of putrefied flesh floating over there? Is that one of the office's projects?" "That's our documentation filing system. At least we know where our data is stored. You simply have to drift through the bile and grab hold of an umbilical cord to ask for what you're looking for. It's all or-ga-ni-zed." "Well, that's very handy. I don't suppose such an original filing system gives much cause for complaint."
A shadowy department cloaked from floor to ceiling in mushrooms, rot and cancerous growth, the Physical Illness Department most likely smells as putrid as it looks, and its walls almost seem ready to burst. The entire department is akin to a trip through a wet, cavernous lair - just how Hector Krank likes it.
Sorrow: Mr. Hector Krank (Head of Physical Illness Dept.)
Thanagers: Denzel "King" Dengue
Minions: Heart Breaker Nursurion Ulcermonner Demisym
- #7Addictions Dept.
Keys: alcohol, insanity, Sorrow, Addictions Dept., drugs, experiments, eyes, Maxxx, Addictions Department, Death Inc.addicts, Heisenberg, weed, insane
The Addictions Department is distinctive due to its striking resemblance to buildings on the surface. It's easy to remember where you are when you're trapped in the Hall, getting your file approved, or in the garbage dump that serves as offices for the Industrial Pollution Department. But it's a lot harder to keep your wits about you when you have to deal with some administrative formality at the Addictions Department. The cold, decrepit corridors, reminiscent of those found at run-down hospitals, give the impression of having witnessed unspeakable things.
This floor of this company comprises a highly efficient laboratory housing instruments designed the replicate the most powerful addictive substances ever known. their scope of application isn't just limited to the surface world! Most of Death, Inc.'s resources are passed between employees, and minions are just as capable of getting hooked. Koffee, for example, is a living-dead plant specially designed for consumption by the inhabitants of the Great Beyond. Jerry is highly opposed to its consumption, believing that it endangers his colleagues' lives after death... Despite that, he downs about four gallons of koffee a day, so it's a bit rich of him to complain!
Even though the whole Department looks like a dilapidated old clinic, the office of Maxxx, the department head, still sticks out as a visual aberration. The walls, floor, and ceiling are upholstered in a material you won't find anywhere else in the Great Beyond. Crystals jut from the floor and into the air as spiraling spikes. Woven from a fabric similar to that used for Death's Cloak, it is enchanted to recreate an accurate representation of your most terrifying anxiety, or your most deeply hidden quirks. It is therefore logical that even Death himself feels like he's looking into the darkest of abysses whenever he visits. Depression is just another form of addiction.
A maddening and unsettling department, eyes and various vats filled with gazing experiments and a blue substance observe your every step through this mockery of a psychiatric ward. Various pills or needles litter the floor in parts of the department, or erratic wires twitch uncontrollably extending off to nowhere; all things in the Addictions Department haven't really been themselves after their first try of something...

- #8Modern Warfare Dept.
Keys: Camille, bombs, guns, warfare, Modern Warfare Department, Modern Warfare Dept., war, Death Inc., Major Warren Pluskhan, Pliskhan
The Modern Warfare Department has also undergone some drastic renovations to reflect developments happening on the surface. Humans are constantly coming up with new and more exciting ways to kill one another, and the art of war can be an effective answer to a number of economic, technological, and material problems that Death, Inc. encounters. For logistical reasons, Death decided to categorize the different types of war by time period, ranging from ancient history to the modern era. It has to be said that missiles, tanks, and planes take up more than their fair share of space!"
When Major Pilskhan's soul erupted into Hall of Eternity, a battle followed that ravaged the corridors of Death, Inc. and shook its very foundations. Once appointed to the role of Sorrow, the Major continued his ambitious "permanent war" project. To win the war, you must become the war. He is constantly hammering this absurd motto into his minions' skulls and has even extended this diehard philosophy to the unwelcoming appearance of his department. A field of ruins, a ghostly no-man's land where no creature dares linger too long - not even the obliging minion who wants to cheer up his team by buying them all koffees at break time!
All the minions working under the Major are required to undergo military training. The Modern Warfare Department isn't just responsible for filling out of paperwork and on-the-fly meetings. All these tasks are carried out as part of tactical operations. A seminar on mid-year investments? It will be held at the same time as bombing a peaceful sit-in. Break time at cafeteria? Affirmative, but not before they've carried out a dawn raid following drone reconnaissance!
From your first steps, the Department defies space; expanding outwards to a bleak red sky choked with grey clouds and black smog. The very ground one walks is through trenches and destroyed buildings, underneath lay mounds of bones and caged adversaries. War is brutal, and the Modern War Department best represents this grim reality.

Historically speaking, the Hall was the first infrastructure to become part of the Death, Inc. premises. The very first department built by the team of workers headed by Jacob is now known as the Natural Disasters Department. This wide-ranging project is run by the very first Sorrow to become a shareholder in Death, Inc." the indefatigable Catherine Imamura. Architecturally speaking, it's a work of art. Nature's elements are combined together to unleash their full strength: The crushing waves of the ocean, tornadoes, earthquakes, and violent winds. It looks incredible, and Jacob is really proud of his very own find — a technique he's since reused in other departments — a magical artificial sky!
In order to make a clear distinction between the various weather disasters, the depart has one section dedicated to forest fires, and to telluric turpitude. It's not just for the aesthetics, but also to make the sorts of post available in Catherine Imamura's department more attractive. Pyrogenic minions can't work properly when surrounded by constant rain showers, while aquatic minions would dry up in this section's oppressive dry heat. They have to stick to a strict schedule, but if, by some miracle, they want to work overtime, Imamura won't stand in their way...
One of Imamura's biggest ambitions for her department is to expand each of the elemental water and fire sections. And when it comes to the end of the world, the Sorrow has a wild imagination. Solar flares, tectonic dislocation, meteor showers... Catherine is never short on inspiration. However, since they are directly at odds with Death, Inc.'s global development objectives, its employees are reluctant to implement there very — overly — ambitious plans. "Short of starting from scratch again, or resolving our problems, we need to take a closer look at who in this company is throwing money at mammoth projects... Just sayin'..." — Jerry, company social and economic committee representative.
The Natural Disasters Department is a interesting world. consisting of burning forests, heavy storms, and destroyed houses, it is one of the more dynamic and crazy areas to explore. the background, consisting of destructive storms and blazing wildfires, represent the dangerous natural disasters that ever existed. In the storm background, platforms are strewn about randomly, with destroyed house-like shapes dotting the area. In the fire background, there are less platforms, but more large hills and piles.

- #10Inevitable Time Dept.
Keys: Time, Bridgets, clocks, Inevitable Time Dept., Sand, Death Inc, Inevitable Time Department, hourglass
A millennia-old company department that was and always will be. This is where the most complex temporal data is processed: Decisions concerning the disappearance of entire civilizations, the untimely deaths of people who stop to tie their laces in the middle of the street... This department is drowning in work. With the universe being what it is, their job is never done. It is a maze-like vessel that is difficult to represent on any standard floor plan. Under the leadership of Time himself, there are plenty of comings and goings. Tick, tock, and sometimes boom. This creates complications. Speaking of, how long has the Inevitable Time Department been around?
The department is a Category Alpha quantum aberration. So, in order to make things more clear cut, this part of the company is built around a time paradox. It both already and doesn't exist yet. And will exist. As a point in principle, Time has done everything in his power to make it extremely complicated to understand. This allows him to justify his excessive demands as a Sorrow and hide his notorious incompetence as a majority shareholder. Actually, young Quinn has a good question about that: "Erm... What exactly do shareholders do?" Sometimes the most basic of questions gives us the solution to problems that have thus far escaped us.
-Inevitable Time Department, storage room, please Jocelyn. Thank you.
-Got it. When do you want to leave?
-Huh? Erm, well... Right away. What a weird question.
-That's not specific enough. Technically, you're already there. Well, you already traveled there in a different time line.
-Oh, no, please. I don't have time to mess around, take me to the storage room right now and...
-Be more spe-ci-fic, Boss, come on! You're the one messing around! I need a detailed time stamp. Otherwise, let's use the simple past, since you already went. Do you see what I'm getting at?
-(Sigh.)
The Time Department is otherworldly and ominous - set against grey seas of sand and distant crumbling pyramids, various clockwork monoliths and towers make up the halls and stairs of this place, always moving in accordance to the whim of Time itself.
The minions faced here will be the deadliest that players have fought through the game.

Keys: Time, Brad, Waldo, Sorrow, Major Warren Pliskhan, Catherine Imamura, Hector Crank, Maxxx, Mr. Grimes, Sorrows, Gordon Grimes · Secondary:
Growing tired of reaping souls over time, Death created the Sorrows to help do the labor for him, which marked the beginning of Death Inc. As high-ranking, powerful executives, each of the Sorrows is in charge of a department in Death Inc., and they (along with their loyal Thanagers and minions) are responsible with maintaining the flow of souls entering through the marble gates of the company. However, without Death to keep them in check, they have become arrogant, only caring about how many souls they can reap for profit. Because of this, they have been intentionally gathering more souls than necessary, going beyond the quotas needed. Every Sorrow and their respective department is themed around a common cause of death (with the exception of Brad, who is the head of security in the hall of eternity)

The main currencies in the underworld are Soulary, ingots, and Prismium. These currencies are used in the Shop, Control room, and Break room.
Soluary take on the form of small white and blue orbs of light. Ingots are similar to gold and Prismium is a rare and rich mineral.
- #14Underworld
Keys: , society, city, departments, soul, spirit, land, ghost, Underworld, Death Inc., World, afterlife, Dimension
Death Inc. is located in the underworld where souls of the dead gather. They come to this place to return to the living with the help of Death. They're typically passerbys with little physical appearance.
Long before Death, Inc. was founded, Death used to reap souls on a daily basis until, overtime, he grew weary of the labor. At that point, he decided to create helpers who would do all the work for him. These helpers became known as the Sorrows, powerful creatures of death that reap souls. Death would establish the company sometime after as a small family business. Death, Inc. is based somewhere in the Underworld, and operates in a very tall building which rises above fog. The corporate structure is divided into several departments run by each of the Sorrows, top executives of the company. Directly under the Sorrows are managers known as Thanagers who oversee the operations in their departments
The underworld is a dreary and largely monochromatic with clouds covering the sun for most of the time. Fog occasionally looms in the city. The buildings within the city tower into the skies but Death Inc. is the tallest above all else. The city is largely modern but with a hint of old fashion architecture mixed together. The underworld has it's own social media and culture but largely inspired by modern day humanity.
Entities in the underworld go to Death Inc. to return to the living, but some souls choose to stay in the underworld as well. Many work for Death. Souls who stay here have a similar life to the living with the difference that they are already dead. However some souls still appear to need to use the restroom despite their spirit like state. Many souls in the underworld have some capability of magic or ability. Spirits, ghosts, and entities live in the city beneath Death Inc.
- #15Brad
Keys: Brad, gargoyle, Hall of Eternity, security, muscular, stone
A nice tie, a black suit that rivals the Boss's own Cloak in terms of class and darkness ... Brad is a perfect fit for his job deciding which souls can cross the ethereal threshold of Death Inc. and which should be ejected with a well-aimed kick up the backside because their time has not yet come. He loves being a Gargoyle because it gives him the clout he needs to "kick ghosts' butts".
Our not-so-friendly neighborhood Gargoyle has seen quite a few clowns come and go in his time. He's a pro who hones his skills pumping iron at the gym every evening. However, Brad has let himself go recently. A bit of a narcissist, he used to have the perfect technique for taking a few discreet selfies to show off his chiseled abs on social media, but now the craze has gotten a bit out of hand.
Brad's not normally one to take vacations. He joined Death Inc. when it was initially founded and has been keeping a watchful eye out from the company's turrets since medieval times ... But someone managed to convince him to take a break, and a very long one at that. And since his return, the devoted Gargoyle has turned into a laidback Sunday surfer who spends all day goofing around, flexing his big muscles, and posing for one selfie after another.
Brad has a tall, burly figure with black skin. He wears glasses and a crinkled white buttoned shirt that hangs open. His most notable feature is his large chin.
After Death defeats Brad, he gains a black suit and earpiece before going back to work.
Brad is a laid-back Gargoyle who's much lazier compared to the other Sorrows. Unlike them, Brad doesn't check the souls that come to Death Inc, whether or not that their time is up yet. He usually spends his time partying with the other Sorrows and Thanagers on weekends, or playing with his paddle-ball during work hours. Brad is extremely narcissistic, as shown when he uses his phone to take selfies for one of his attacks during battle and his intention to go on social media after the fight. His narcissism and addiction to social media has led to him neglecting his duties as head of security.
- #16Barnaby Proudfoot
Keys: Gargoyle, Brad, Barnaby, Barnaby Proudfoot
Barnaby is Brad's more serious alter ego.
Barnaby is a dark-looking Gargoyle with a large chin and red mouth. He has glowing white eyes and ears that stick straight up with dark particles floating up in between them. Barnaby wears a typical black and white two-piece suit with a thin tie. He is extremely top-heavy, with disproportionately small legs compared to his large upper abdomen and arms. Barnaby always hovers a short distance above the ground, his tiny wings flapping furiously behind his back. He has an earpiece and is shown to use it several times during his fight.
Barnaby seems very serious about his work and has full intent to do his job to protect the Hall of Eternity even if it means stopping Death himself. However, Barnaby is almost as annoying even when isn't slacking off. Barnaby is prone to talking into his earpiece, even if who he's talking to is standing right in front of him, as shown by how he reacts to the player when they meet him.

At the end of the 19th century, the industrial revolution changed the face of the world, and young Gordon saw a unique opportunity to cover himself in oil and glory. He dived headlong into work ... and a vat filled with the most toxic, disgusting, and pestilent substances ever known. Out came a putrid colossus, spewed out by the metalwork factory that is still polluting the air we breathe to this day. In other words, he saw his chance and took it.
So great was the industrial pollution icon’s ambition that it not only manifested in his monstrous appearance. He also became impossible to work with. Even his closest minions were terrified that they could be fired at any moment, simply because he felt like it. You’re constantly walking on rotten egg shells with Mr. Grimes ...
"Yeah, erm, you might think the boss is a refined sort of fellow, but actually you’d be wrong. He’s more of a TV, beer, football kind of guy, who won’t think twice about confiscating your cell if you’re not paying attention." — Rare off-the-record account from a minion in the Industrial Pollution Department.
Gordon Grimes is a colossus made of a tar-like black substance. He has the ability to shapeshift and uses this ability to enlarge his limbs and teleport across his boss arena. He has white glowing eyes and, when visible, a similarly glowing mouth. His body appears to be constantly shifting or melting. So far, he holds the record for the largest boss in the game.
Gordon Grimes appears to be a very passionate individual. Although he is impatient and a bit arrogant at times, he always tries to keep a timely schedule and scolds Death when he makes him miss a meeting. He is constantly trying to improve the state of global pollution in the mortal realm, trying to out-perform his rival, Hector Krank. He is not very tidy, though, as in one of Death’s battle quotes, he describes how filthy Grimes’ department is.
- #18Waldo
Keys: robot, Waldo, animatronic, Toxic Food Processing, Sorrow, food, junk food, toxic, burger, restaurant, Toxic Food Processing Department
With the resounding success of voracity curses, the concept of "starving to death" has come back into style, declaring a new millennium of horrors to decimate the living. Always at the forefront of innovation, Death is turning the problem on its head by taking inspiration from the 20th-century food processing revolution. The fast food chain Waldo Burger® made its fortune by offering cheap sandwiches made of fat, sugar and salt, and scented with delicious chemical aromas that deadened all manner of reason. Death later took the soul of a young employee who was, fortunately, trapped in a walk-in freezer in a Waldo's next-to-a-highway. He wasn't especially astonished, or even put off, by discovering the company. The goals were more or less the same: production, production and re-production after that.
On the other hand, Death concedes that he recruited the young man in a hurry, which meant cutting through some red tape. For example, none of the managers of Death Inc. are able to give the real last name of the Head of the Toxic-Food Processing Department, nor his first name. People developed the habit of calling the young man "Waldo" as the former server closely resembled the mascot of that restaurant chain. It was said contemptuously that "anyway, everyone working at Waldo had to be called Waldo, right? Brainwashing must be so intense that you even forget your own name and all those trade secrets that drove kids nuts."
In the depths of the department, Waldo is working to recreate workspaces suitable for the development of new high-calorie commodities. He managed to have ice cream and pizza added to the list of "Five Daily Fruits and Vegetables" and instigated devastating slogans like "No Mercy for Croissants", "Highly Processed Food is a Friend for Life!" and the no less terrifying "Fat is Life". Waldo is not only a talented Sorrow who can balance the essentials of food factory culture with the company's philosophy. He's a bloody production machine who makes no distinction between work and passion. He's also the only one who knows the secret recipe for a banana-chocolate formilk-shake; really very good!
Waldo appears to be a cartoonish looking little boy. He is fairly big, being taller than Death himself. Waldo has light skin and wears a patterned cap at all times that covers his fairly curly hair. He has classic "cartoon style" eyes and large eyelashes with a snub nose and a small mouth but fairly large cheeks, as well as a large chin. Waldo wears a gray button-up shirt and black pants under a white apron alongside some black shoes. Waldo usually carries a platter laden with a disgusting stack of burgers with body parts sticking out of them and a huge scoop of ice cream on top.
In his phase one form, the entire lower half of his body is replaced with a spider-like, three-clawed robot body that presumably has a soda bottle installed in it. In his phase two form, Waldo gains a more unhinged look, with his hair being more mussed as well as his eyes becoming less cartoonish and more frightening. His mouth is split into a jagged smile and he is armed with a red glowing chainsaw. Waldo can expand his face and eyes to look much simpler yet scary all the same. When Waldo is defeated, his chainsaw goes through his head, releasing a large amount of blood.
Waldo at first is shown to have a friendly, if annoying, demeanor. Starting off with only giggling and singing bad songs, Waldo does not seem like much of a threat.
Once the fight actually begins, however, Waldo's true sadistic and cunning personality comes to the surface. He has a short temper if plans don't work quickly, which is shown by him breaking out of his robot body in frustration and attacking the player with a chainsaw if the player whittles down his health. Waldo is also quite psychotic, as evidenced by his maniacal laughter and ferocious swinging of his chainsaw throughout the fight. It also seems that he can get careless and clumsy if he gets angry enough as shown by how his fingers slip and he gets a chainsaw through his head at the end of the fight.
Waldo shows very little care for safety, poisoning his customers with disgusting "meat" to lead them closer to death. He only cares about production, as evidenced by his motto and his songs.
- #19Mr. Hector Krank
Keys: Krank, crab, pestilence, cancer, Sorrow, sickness, infestation, fungus, Physical Illness Department, illness, Hector Krank, Physical Illness, virus, fungi
Hector didn't wait for Death to hire him before getting stuck into his work. He's self-taught, a real self-made crab, who single- handedly created a unique stench that will plague all life for millennia to come. At the cost of his poor little crustaceous shell, and by combining cells in an entirely unnatural way, the terrible and ignominious cancer was born.
Hector’s greatest strength lies in his ability to adapt. He most recently contributed to a new infectious disease project that has been so wildly successful it’s quickly turned into a top political phenomenon. He, himself, is surprised that same tactics are as useful as ever-spreading discord through misinformation. Illness always gets the better of those who don’t take it seriously!
Mr. Krank's arrival at Death, Inc. precipitated the departure of Corvusini Prestin, who created the black plague back in his day. By his own admission, however effective his own illness had been, it could not compete with the promising young manager crab. "He might not look the part, but there's no denying his cancer's in it for the long haul."
Hector is a large crustacean resembling a fiddler crab. His larger claw is made from a cluster of tumor-like growths. He has eyestalks covered in tumors. Unlike most crabs, Hector does not have a visible shell or exoskeleton, making him vulnerable to Death’s attacks. His back has a wave-like sway, and his legs are small and stubby.
Hector is nothing short of irritable. He frequently puts up with the gripes of his department just to make an impact, losing his temper if things go awry. He is a business rival of Mr. Gordon Grimes, and he tries to steal his ideas from time to time. He is also a rule breaker, misusing company equipment for his leisure time. He does his best to improve his line of reaping, suggesting new ways to ravage the mortal plane to Death in his victory quotes.
- #20Maxxx
Keys: smoke, alcohol, smile, Sorrow, addict, drugs, Maxxx, Addictions Department, mask, weed
Even amongst Death Inc.'s most devastating Sorrows, the organism known as Maxxx is a bit of an odd one out, a true abomination that raises more questions than it answers about the company's recruitment process. Rumors are rife concerning his life before death: pathological collector of all liquid and olfactory substances from the surface, organized crime lord taken hostage by a private militia, trainee chemist who got caught up in an unfortunate experiment ... There is no end to the speculation, but so far nobody has guessed correctly.
If you ask Patrick at reception, he will tell you there is no information about the Head of Addictions. However, if you look at the company organization chart, you will find a photo of Maxxx with a very strange description underneath: "Thank you for all you have done for me." More worrying still, according to Orville, the IT file containing his data cannot be located.
Most employees, including his own minions, avoid confrontation with Maxxx. When asked, people either dodge the question, at best, or open their eyes wide in terror. Jocelyn only adds to the intrigue: "Maxxx is an enigmatic smile. If you offer him the slightest sliver of attention, he’ll stare at you intensely without saying a word. It’s one of his strengths. As much as I hate to admit it, Maxxx simply cannot be diagnosed."
Maxxx physically resembles an office worker, wearing an untucked white collared button-up shirt with dark grey dress pants similar to the outfit of a Ghost or a Pyroghost and standing significantly taller than either. His head is formed by a black semi-solid mass and a simple, smiling mask, which produces a red glow from the eyes and mouth. A full syringe protrudes from his side. His clothes appear to flicker at all times as if glitching.
During his fight, Maxxx jitters constantly when not attacking, running in place or moving his limbs jerkily. When he uses his Needle Bolts attack, his arms and legs shrink and resemble the same substance as his head, which expands from behind his mask into a large, misshapen blob with several eyes and a round, toothed mouth. When he uses his Gimme, Smash & Grab or Inhale/Exhale attacks, his head becomes much larger, with only two eyes and vertical, narrow teeth. When defeated, his mask shatters and the mass erupts into an indistinct cone from the opening. His portrait in this state shows bandages and a frown on the cracked mask, which spins on a shaky pillar of the black substance.
Maxxx is extremely energetic and apparently friendly, although his manner of speaking can make it difficult to parse exactly what he is saying. Like all of the Sorrows, his over-enthusiasm for collecting the souls of the living in as widespread a manner as possible makes him difficult to work with, and he repeatedly insists he just wants to be happy.
Maxxx appears to care about his Thanagers (at least to some degree), even though he doesn't mention them on any normal occasion. But he will show pity to Heisenberg after you defeat him ("O h_ p o o r_ p o o r_ II HEISENBERG II_ h e_ w a s_ s o_ f u n n y_"), and then proceed to also say that even though he feels bad for Heisenberg's defeat, he still finds violence extremely entertaining.
Maxxx has a quirk of speaking with spaced out letters and underscores in his text. Such as "I t s_ T i m e_ t o_ be || H a p p y ||."
- #21Major Warren Pliskhan
Keys: bombs, guns, Sorrow, Major Warren Pliskhan, firearm, war, gun, Warren Pliskhan, planes, army, modern warfare, weapon
On the surface, Warren was nothing short of a calamity. At Death Inc, he's a large-scale catastrophe. "Large-scale" is a bit of a misnomer, given that he's only 4 feet tall standing at attention (which is to say, all the time). Drawing inspiration from the greatest khaki-kitted, medal-adorned scoundrels of all time, little Warren set out on a journey from which there was no return. Hitching a ride on a Death & Taxes 850 warhead guaranteed him a one-way ticket to the afterlife. Some say it might calm the spirits, but not in Warren's case.
The company’s entrance hall instantly turned into a battlefield the minute the Major arrived. Even Brad couldn’t put an end to the massacre. We don’t know why, but Warren managed to slip through the door to the Beyond with a missle-launcher smuggled in his underpants. High on his victory and in the mood to cause chaos, he didn’t hold back.
— Mister Chief Executive Officer, Sir, the little runt destroyed everything and now he’s asking for a job. What should we do?
— Hmph. Leave it to me. It’s about time I measured up to an opponent. No pun intended.
— And the hall ...?
— Use your initiative, Patrick! You’re forever on at me about renovations. Well, now’s your chance. Get in touch with Logistics and sort something out. The color scheme should be dark, of course. Dark and elegant.
The Major appears as a caricature of a modern military leader. His large hat and moustache cover his entire face. He wields a whip, sometimes a cutlass, along with other weapons he pulls out during his battle. He has 5 badges on his jacket, although their meaning is unknown. His most notable feature is his height. He is supposedly only 4 feet tall when standing at attention (which is all the time).
The Major has an explosive personality, literally. He attacks using all kinds of missiles and explosives with no regard for safety, and pre-battle dialogue consists of him shouting orders to attack. He laughs and screams manically during the battle. After he is defeated, he initially seems willing to follow Death's orders once again, but quickly pulls out a big red button, hitting himself with 29 nuclear warheads, destroying most of his department.
- #22Ms. Catherine Imamura
Keys: Sorrow, Ms. Catherine Imamura, water, Catherine Imamura, waves, storm, tsunami, Catherine
Sixty-six million years ago, Death had a big problem on his hands. Dinosaurs, pterosaurs, and pliosaurs were passing by in their hundreds. Death and his young associates were struggling to maintain a balance between the resplendent life forms and the necromantic flux of the universe. However, after an interview held on the fly between two routine missions, Ms. Catherine Imamura was hired by the company. Her final test to see her temporary contract made permanent was to take charge of the so-called Crumbling Cretaceous Contract. With one snap of her watery fingers, the terrifying Imamura bombarded Earth with her solar winds, whipped the oceans into a frenzy, made meteors rain down from the sky, and ... gave Death Inc. its first break in the stock markets by raising its shares by 444,000 in one fell swoop!
Catherine belongs to the first generation of Sorrows created by Death. As such, she enjoys a substantial benefits package. In terms of pure power and ability to spread chaos and destruction, she is as good as they come. She’s what Jerry would call a “company veteran,” and, while it may seem logical for her to have fostered a rivalry with her younger colleagues, Grimes, Krank, and even the Major, it’s not necessarily normal. Nobody should be able to benefit from such outlandish advantages simply because they’ve been working at the company longer.
— Ms. Imamura, now that Mr. Corvusini’s retired, you are the last one standing of Death Inc.’s antediluvian Sorrows. Any thoughts on that?
— Tssk. Corbusieri always had trouble making a voice for himself. Youthfulness should be quashed. We shouldn’t hesitate to crush it entirely, if necessary. He simply didn’t care enough about the company. I care about the company!
— Erm ... Do you mean that he ... didn’t have such a firm grip on this as his successor, Mr. Krank?
— Mr. Prank ... He’s just yet another poptart. Probably one too many of them in this confession.
— Ahem. I wrote down 'poptart' and 'confession', but I imagine you mean upstart and profession. Don’t you?
- Unpublished excerpt from a post-masterclass interview of Catherine Imamura, Sorrow of Natural Disasters.
Catherine Imamura is a humanoid water figure with flowing water for her geisha hair. She has snow-white eyes and deep blue lips, and her skin has a dark blue hue. She wears a Japanese kimono in cyan water with white, fluffy water foam serving as the rims around the neck and wrists. She had drops of water floating above her hand during the introduction before the battle.
Catherine Imamura is described as an egoistic woman who likes to brag about her previous performances, from big earthquake pandemonium to perpetual flood damage, such as how she brags about her huge success in the massive Krakatoa explosion in 1883. She extols herself before the battle with Death, but her speech and spelling are muddled, and she frequently mispronounces one word for another. (For example, stating "I'll brush you like a perm" instead of "I'll crush you like a worm")
- #23Time
Keys: Time, , Inevitable Time, Inevitable Time Department, old man
An entity created from quantum causality, Time likes to appear to others in a way that reflects his character, i.e., swinging between total senility and caustic deviousness. At the company, and as someone appearing at the top of the company organization chart, he wears a little circus magician's suit, adopts a grouchy demeanor and dons a white beard, before going totally off the rails. Recently - if we can say that - Time has been scheming in his corner, refusing to meet with the boss one-on-one. Why?
When the company was founded, Time was already working alongside Death and his loyal companion, Jacob, as well as with Life, to whom he felt very close. This millennia-long association was built on common ground, with Time and Death both sharing an interest in lightheartedness: sarcastic comments, dark humor ... It seems the conflict began when Life kept Death at arm’s length over their joint career plan. It would - or should - have worked better had either of them been able to leave their egos behind for a minute or two. From the point of view of millennia-old beings, though, that’s roughly equal to eternity. There’s really not much in it.
— Right, that’s enough; I can’t take it anymore. I need a vacation.
— That’s impossible, as you well know. Not until you admit you treated our mutual friend unfairly!
— I already have! Come on, let’s get back to normality, the quantum chaos and all that ... That’s enough!
— Hihihi, oh no. A little riddle first: How many times do needles cross a clock fac ...
— What a pain!
Time resembles an elderly man with a white beard that practically covers his short stature, alongside a bulbous nose with a red tint at the end. Complete with black wizard robes and hat, Time also carries an ivory staff tipped with a crescent at the end, and carries a red pendulum during various animations. Time is just about as short as Death is, and almost waddles comically forward when he moves.
During Phase 2, Time drastically changes in form; while he retains his white beard, his physique becomes top-heavy with two skinny, yet muscled arms and two scrawny legs that dangle from underneath him. Time now towers three times over Death, and his hands often swipe in claw-like fashion. Upon his defeat however, Time is reduced to all but a skeleton retaining his beard and hat before fading away into sand when the dialogue ends.
Time likes to appear to others in a way that reflects his character, i.e., swinging between total senility and caustic deviousness. Like Death, Time shares interests in lighthearted conversations, sarcastic comments towards others and just a bit of dark humor. Time also possesses a streak of enjoying teasing others, such is the case as during Deaths confrontation against Time, where he wastes his time with riddles in an effort to get Death to answer them with annoyance.
- #24Will Hung
Keys: Thanager, rope, Will Hung · Secondary:
One might assume Will is the dead body hanging from the knot tied in the rope. He finds this assumption infuriating, because Will Hung is the rope. He had the same problem back when he worked with dockers in the land of the living, and Will hated when they confused him with someone else. He allegedly tried to make himself stand out by strangling some of his mortal colleagues, which earned him his place at Death Inc. Unfortunately for him, the situation didn't improve once he started working for the company.
Will has personally strangled a large number of employees, sometimes for no apparent reason. He is a staunch supporter of the old management style that works on the assumption that all employees are doing as little as possible, rather than trying to earn money for their boss by any means possible. So, for Will, this means never letting his guard down and constantly anticipating their failure.
"Ecchhh, cheuurrhff... hrrk... ellp...!! Ecchhh!"
- Words spoken by the visibly alert body caught up in Will Hung's noose.
Will Hung appears to be a rope with a knot on one end and a noose on the other. He is nearly always seen strangling a helpless worker.
Aside from his entry in the pitbook, little is known about Will Hung's temperment. What is known is that Will Hung is quick to accuse others of failure and coincidentally taking out his frustrations on the poor soul by wrapping himself around their neck.
- #25Leon Clean
Keys: skeleton, Leon Clean, janitor, Thanager
The ghoul known to the company under the name of "Leon Clean" is said to have lived a full life during his time in the mortal world. In fact, the neurotic minions in the Hall of Eternity have even admitted, through gritted teeth, that Leon led an exceptionally fruitful life, which led to his somewhat premature arrival in the company. Leon is so strong and vigorous - despite his total lack of life force - that he leaves the tile shining brighter than ever. Apparently, he was a legend on Earth: a man with a flawless, shiny bald head who could overcome even the most severe grime with a little bit of elbow grease and a winning attitude.
Leon also appeared on the big screen, declaring war on the terrors of dirty kitchens in commercials. As the stunt double for a supposedly "immortal" French actor (funny, as if anybody could escape the expert sleuths at Death Inc ...), this legend finally decided to retire from film sets for good after deciding to trap a child in a vacuum bag, believing that such a dirty kid couldn't possibly be innocent.
— So is this guy a murderer or not? Because he gives me the creeps. If you walk through a freshly washed hall with your street shoes one, he goes crazy.
— I don't trust him. Maybe he's an imposter. Leon and Clean can't be his real identify, I'm sure of it. Plus, he talks with a fake Russian accent!
— So who is this guy??
— I don't know, doggone it! In the cafeteria, he seemed to be saying that he could turn back time by drinking a magic potion, but that you'd turn into poop if you drank it.
— That sure is stupid.
Leon Clean is a skeleton that appears in a custodial outfit, with a pull-along vacuum by his side.
Not much is known about his personality outside of his journal entry, but what we can get from it is that he is a neat freak, obsessed with getting rid of any filth he comes into contact with. His obsession often goes to extreme lengths, as shown in his description, endangering others to satisfy his impulses.
- #26Slyma
Keys: radioactive, Thanager, Grimes, eye, Slyma, pet, barrel
This barrel wasn't always this way. Before its numerous transformations, it was just your average cask, filled with nuclear waste of unrivaled toxicity, hidden deep underground in the middle of nowhere. The serial number engraved on the lower edge reads 5LYM4, but some sharp-witted worker wrote over the 5 and 4 with a permanent marker so it now says “SLYMA".
After the umpteenth acquisition of resources for Death Inc.'s Industrial Pollution Department, the barrel tattooed "SLYMA" came into the possession of Gordon Grimes, who added it to his personal collection, as part of his employee compensation package. Even the emperor of toxicity couldn't have guessed what was going to happen next ...
After coming into contact with chemical agent X, of a totally deviant nature, the barrel mutated into an organic creature designed to cover surroundings in a thick layer of flexible slime and acidic regurgitation ... The worst of it is that he's completely obsessed with Gordon, who doesn't like it at all. "The problem is its hygiene. That thing, SLYMA, recognizes its master by scent. In Grimes' case, it's not surprising it's following him around like a puppy."
Slyma is a toxic waste barrel with spider legs and a row of teeth inside its body, as well as an eye in it's mouth.
During his fight, Slyma is seen as aggressive, attacking Death on sight. Based on his journal entry, Slyma also has a playful side with how he behaves towards Grimes.
- #27X-4H
Keys: garbage, Thanager, waste, X-4H, blob
Some of the minions that roam the halls of the Industrial Pollution Department may be even more monstrous than usual. This might be because a non-negligible quantity of an extremely toxic substance was misplaced in 1959. Known as "Solution X4", it is a complex mix of fungal acid, oleum, and the terrifying Chemical X. Formulated to achieve peak production capacity, its secondary effects on cognitive ability can be measured by the volume of drool produced by a Blobby after mistakenly ingesting X4.
Once an employee has been infected, X4 annihilates all ability to defy orders - which is very useful, from management's point of view - although it also makes the host more emotionally unstable. In one instance, a host (or as they are known in administrative lingo, an X4-H), devoured his superior's legs to show his gratitude after receiving a laughably low Soulary raise. It was around +0.05%, so nothing worth losing one's head. Meanwhile, said superior actually did lose his legs over it. Yes, yes, it's also a problem among ghouls.
One very clever suggestion was sent up to the management by Jerry, Death Inc.'s union delegate, in 1990: "Couldn't you stamp 'WARNING, SUPER DANGEROUS X4, keep away, idiots!' on the cases of X4 vials???" This suggestion was unanimously approved by the company's permanent employees, but Mr. R.J. Barron ordered Mr. Grimes to exercise his veto. "Imagine the possibilities, Gordon ... Today's unstable mutagen could become tomorrow's most high-performing pollutant! THAT'S what the industry needs!"
X4-H looks like a mutated Blobby. It is noticeably drooling, is quite misshapen, and has several more than the usual number of eyes.
While there seems to be more than one X4-H, indicating different personalities, ingesting the X4 seems to have similar effects to the victim's personality. X4-H seems to be more animalistic than other employees, as its cognitive ability appears to be impaired due to a byproduct of the chemical.
- #28Richard John Barron
Keys: tar, Richard John Barron, oii, Thanager, Modern Pollution Department, pollution
The "Top Toupee", as he calls himself, was hired out of the blue in 2017. He has earned countless scribblings in company memos thanks to his flamboyant style and hardened attitude, as well as his signature rages. R.J. Barron almost immediately took over the role of the Thanager working with Mr. G. Grimes in Death Inc.'s industrial sector. This fast-talker is always trying to manipulate everyone around him: His fortune was founded on the questionable sale of bottled "clean air". This wager ended up being a great success on Earth, because he was able to find plenty of equally cynical takers to buy these empty plastic bottles.
Before being hired, Barron had spent nearly 35 years of his career making moves on the metaphorical chessboard: speculating on non-renewable energy, developing increasingly monumental space projects, and investing massively in cryptocurrency, the blackened icing on this anti-environmental cake. This guy earned the favor of elite politicians, who were persuaded that the fight for the environment was nothing but a "cheat hoax" created by evil-doers without any scrap of "true business-minded values, because they want to destroy our productivity!" Some thought it was inevitable that his solid gold golf club trophy would one day slip off a shelf and crush his skull, which is exactly what happened. Barron was then recruited to work with an even more toxic character: Gordon Grimes.
This vile old miser was made Thanager as soon as he set foot on the Hall of Eternity's doorstep. Gordon grimes demanded unique accommodations for his new associate: His lower body was removed in order to attach him to a wall of his office using a large suction cup - whose tar-like grease definitely isn't what you think it is, despite the awful smell - "That way, my dear Richard can express himself ... and you don't change a winning team; I'll be in charge of him!" declared Grimes, "The King doesn't need ministers - but a jester always comes in handy to amuse the court." Regardless, there's no question of respect in his department anyway, since Grimes now also intends to invest in cryptocurrency ... and to use his pretty puppet to understand all its pollution opportunities in a flash.
Richard John Barron has a normal upper part of his body, with a white button up shirt, large nose, and a pompadour haircut - however his employee hand book entry reveals that this may be a wig given his self-given nickname of "Top Toupee."
His lower half has less form and is described as "tar-like grease", attached to the wall by a suction cup, which is also seen to be flexible during his flight, as he can stretch across the stage during his attacks. His other attacks also summon fists and arms from other parts of the arena, which may mean that his lower half is also able to produce additional body parts to allow him to do so.
Richard seems to think smart, but mercilessly, only seeming to care about profits opposed to the average employee. He also seems to be trusting and convincing, getting Gordon Grimes to invest in cryptocurrency, as well as convincing him to implement "Solution X4" into his department.
- #29Pierce Gorske
Keys: Thanager, burger, martial art, Pierce Gorske, toothpick
In his lifetime, Pierce Görske was determined to enter the Guinness Book of World Records by becoming the first martial artist to hold the record for most burgers eaten in less time than it takes to say, "These fries are too greasy." Görske was well on his way; in 1988, he defeated the one nicknamed "Lucky Wheeler" in the International Championships for light contact. He got as far as 22,476 Waldo Patties eaten, but a toothpick planted too deep in the bun of the 22,477th bested him by perforating his stomach. Traitors, those toothpicks.
Görske is one of the top Thanagers at Death Inc. As an entrepreneurial life coach, he excels in all practical methods of reviving a weakened team: "gamification" of employee tasks and ninjutsu techniques applied to office work. According to him, a good minion at Death Inc. must always surpass their own limits to stay competitive. "If you can eat an extra-large Waldo Supreme in two minutes, you can do it in thirty seconds. Like me: I can do the splits, so I can ALSO do them between two trucks going 80 mph down the highway."
"The true mentality of a worker is to let nothing go. You need to visualize a pyramid, you see. The first level: serious. The second level: sport. Sport is very important. The third level: try to have fun. It's also essential to keep your mind in a positive mood. Bright spot flavor. In short. Remember that if you don't apply the three levels in your work, I'll come by with a couple of atemi for you. Bang-bang! And then you're absolutely aware of productivity." - P. Görske, extract from a seminar on Competitiveness, Development, and Ninjutsu.
Gorske appears to be a cheeseburger with a whole wheat bun and a cherry tomato sticking out of his head. He consists mostly of just cheese and meat, but he seems to also have some sauce and a pickle slice for a tongue. His arms and legs are probably made of sauce or cheese and are black. Gorske has glowing red eyes fixed in a determined stare with thick eyebrows. He wields two glowing red toothpicks that he sticks in his head when not using them.
Not much is known about his personality, as he is only relegated to a miniboss fight. From his entries in the Pitbook, it's shown that he's somewhat free thinking and optimistic, giving his colleagues helpful advice to increase productivity and prevent burnout.
- #30Candice
Keys: lollipop, Thanager, sweets, cupcake, Candice, candy
Lucy Fruit is a highly trained actress who decided to specialize in the art of clowning when she entered the Conservatory. On stage, she fills out her act with acrobatic gags. This sort of training doesn't come cheap, so to pay for it she works as an event facilitator at a children's club on Wednesdays and during vacations ... As a bonus, this has also made her an expert at dealing with a difficult crowd.
While on stage and in front of children, Lucy becomes Candice, or rather, Candiiiiiice! She's a real live wire and a total sweetheart. Perhaps even too much so, since security once caught the actress trying to shoplift a packet of sour candies from the grocery store. What should have been a minor incident turned into a major catastrophe that left fifteen people dead. Candice appeared in court and ultimately spent the rest of her days in a psychiatric unit.
She was immediately offered a job as company event facilitator for Death Inc., which was desperately short of creative ideas to create "fun" memories for their employees. She was the one to come up with one of the interns' favorite events: Underpants on Your Boss's Head Day. It's a show loved by young and old alike.
Candice is a Cupcake mascot wielding a giant lollipop as a twirling baton. She appears to be on a constant sugar high with a small noticeable twitch in her eye.
Like her appearance, she is based on sugar and sweets, making her very hyper and energetic. This can be seen with her moving very fast during the fight. Candice also seems somewhat vulgar, with her giving Death the middle finger whenever she's defeated. Based on her Pitbook description, she likely has a manic personality.
- #31Denzel "King" Dengue
Keys: doctor, mosquito, Dengue, , rapper, Denzel "King" Dengue, King
Davey Dawson was a highly influential mosquito in urban circles. Originally from a reputable family of culicidae, he initially spent two years working as a doctor before realizing he could have an unlikely career as a hip-hop singer. Davey had his first hit with Suck It! under the pseudonym Junior Juicy Palus.
After two long years crossing the desert and a few obscure cameos in very-low-budget movies, JJ Palus switched names a few times while trying to pin down his musical identity. It was around this time when he met Hector Krank at a seminar over a nice glass of rhesus negative during a pandemic at the surface.
Changing his name to Denzel "King" Dengue, the mosquito gained clout and influence while working as a part-time consultant for the infectious Disease Department, simultaneously releasing his new funk/hip-hop album Blood of My Blood. Krank offered him the Earth, thanks to his influence at Death Inc., and claims he could have catapulted him to the post of Malaria Sorrow with a click of his claws, but Denzel chose to focus on his music instead.
Denzel appears as a large mosquito with 6 limbs, which he uses as hands as seen in his intro where he holds his phone and cup. He also has small wings on his back which are still able to help him fly with ease during his fight.
He wears a fur jacket that has a medal on it with Death's head and a crown atop it, regarding his nickname "King."
Denzel seems to be more laid back and less violent opposed to the rest of the Thanagers, with him rather focusing on his career rather than death. As his career implies, he is very extroverted, as he is seen having a large social media presence in the game and trailers. He is seen to be on his phone before the fight, and a picture shows him partying with Brad.
- #32Lambert Heisenberg
Keys: doctor, Thanager, drugs, Lambert Heisenberg, therapist, Heisenberg
With his remarkably logical brain, Dr. Lambert Heisenberg is notable among mortals for his ability to pass for what he is not. During the 60s, he served as a psychiatric researcher at Ashecliffe, mixing theories and smoking injunctions about psychopharmacology. Sorcerer, charlatan, and architect of lies, the doctor has a very impressive CV, hypocritically extolling his virtues, to justify his place as Thanager in the Addictions Department.
Heisenberg amused himself by accumulating tricks. In a simple spirit of contradiction, he used chemical strategies to delay the fated hour of his death as much as possible. He co-directed drug traffic for many years, wrote an autobiography entitled I AM DANGER to mock his colleagues about antibiotics and generics, pretending that he was the only one competent to offer humans immortality! Nice claim! But in the end, too much rapamycin is still too much rapamycin, and he had to stop one day.
"Did I know Dr. Corvusini, you ask? Obviously! I admire his work. A great visionary. A few centuries closer, and we would have worked together. I seriously considered the Physical Illness Department, but the Addictions Department offered me a greater range of possibilities. I'm very happy to work here because I have guinea pigs. Did I say 'guinea pigs'? I meant 'clients', or 'patients'. What's important is that I see the Phasis anomaly project through." - Dr. Heisenberg, when asked about psychopharmacology.
Lambert Heisenberg appears as a typical lab scientist, wearing a white lab coat along with a surgical mask and tinted glass. The arms of his coat fold up to his shoulders and hide his hands, akin to a straitjacket. His arms are released and hands revealed during his syringe attack and when he eats his medicine. Beneath his lab coat is a black, sleeveless undershirt, also revealed during his syringe attack.
Heisenberg has a round teeth which can be seen beneath his surgical mask, which become pointed when he eats medicine. He also has a large head, most likely from his large "logical brain", which expands and explodes when he is defeated.
Heisenberg seems intelligent, but somewhat erratic and unhinged. His profession in both life and in death requires such an intelligence, which he has used to great effect by getting a significant position in Death, Inc., and choosing where he'd like to work in the company. However, he is somewhat mad, as he participated in criminal activities in his life, and now experiments on those in the Addictions Department in death.
- #33Camille Flage
Keys: hunger, Camille, Thanager, war, feral, Camille Flage, weapon
Camille is a gifted mechanic and, for a woman like her, metal work was a source of comfort, especially during dark periods such as World War I. Surrounded by enemy soldiers, she was able to hold her position for several days before dying of hunger and thirst one winter evening. Ms. Flage aimlessly roamed the area around the entrance to Death Inc. for a really long time, looking for something to eat. She was convinced that she would return to her work as soon as she'd had a bite.
But the deceased woman's woes didn't end after her arrival at Death Inc. According to a process that the technical department still can't explain, nearly all of her anima had drained out of the bullet holes in her body. Patrick stamped her file and suggested that she be confined somewhere in the archives until a solution could be found. However, this was also especially because she had already devoured half his desk and chewed off part of the phone. Camille Flage was as famished as she was dangerous, even for the living dead!
Major Pliskhan was rifling through the archives to make sure no-one was hiding any weapons from him that were forbidden under the Geneva Conventions when he stumbled upon Camille. He immediately realized he'd laid his hands on a very unique sort of weapon indeed - an indomitable fury who was able to blend into any environment and was capable of demonstrating primal rage and cruelty. She could even cut into an armored carcass with her teeth, no problem! Camille was going to become one of his key assets for war, the perfect archetype of hunger embodied in a living weapon!
Camille appears as a barefoot, skinny woman with small bags under her eyes and grey skin. She sports dark, unkept hair that drags along the ground behind her. She wears a knee-length sleeveless grey dress. Instead of a nose, she has two nostrils, adding to her gaunt appearance. Although her mouth appears small, in some of her attacks she opens it extremely wide, exposing her many teeth. Her hunched walking posture adds to her overall impression of frailty.
When attacking, Camille has sharp nails and a ravenous, many-toothed maw. Her hair obscures most of her body and trails behind her as she moves, giving her a much more feral demeanor than her initial appearance suggests.
- #34Horace Sinistrocirrus
Keys: Horace, lightning, Thanager, thunder, Horace Sinistrocirrus, storm, cloud
In life, William Horace Steroshall was a remarkable opera singer. This hot-tempered vocalist held a particular loathing for the journalists who had written scathing reviews of his performance: "His singing is beloved by farmers, gardeners, and people wishing to fill swimming pools in July the world over. As for his execution at the opera, however, we'd be all of it." One evening, when Horace was due to play the great Wotan in a production of Wagner's Das Rheingold, he was hit by an enormous lightning strike where he stood as he was settling a dispute with his director over where he should be standing. How ironic for the God of War to be struck down in the middle of an argument! That was how he drew the attention of C. Imamura at Death Inc.!
As the Thanager affiliated with meteorological disasters, Horace has found a captive audience for his cataclysmic talent. The minions in his department, including the Stormies, have learned to keep their opinions to themselves and to sail through rough seas without batting an eyelid. Horace channels his team's frustrations and suffering and uses it to generate electricity. Orville, a big fan of green energy, would like to look more into it, but Sinistrocirrus believes the secrets of his great skill should not fall into the hands of a "pseudo-science-loving" eco-warrior.
— Oh! Actually, while I'm thinking about it ... Why not ask Horace to come and perform a small solo in the musical? With his voice, he'd make the perfect King Triton!
— Erm ... I can't tell if you're serious, or if you've completely lost your mind, Patty. don't you remember the summer show of '35? All the windows in Building D blew out. Everyone thought it was a crushed glass tornado.
— Ah, yes ... I do remember, now that you mention it.
— So, unless you fancy another trip through insurance hell ...
— I see what you mean. Thanks, but no thanks.
Horace appears to be a large black storm cloud, with two narrowed glowing eyes and a puffy mouth that sometimes looks like that of a cartoon character during some of his attacks. Naturally, Horace has no arms, but during some attacks two of them will sprout out of him.
- #35The 'Bridgets'
Keys: Bridgets, scissors, letters, sister's, The 'Bridgets', old, mail · Secondary:
To manage the sprawling Mail & Chronology Department of Time's department, you need one dedicated to each company: the three charming filing clerks Bridget, Brigitte and Mary-Bridget boast that they are the cream of the crop when it comes to knowing all Death Inc.'s confidential files by heart, from the tips of their steely scissors. They like being part of the three "Bridgets", the fiery shrews who don't shy away from any administrative formality, no matter how tendentious. They are feared and respected even in the mortal world, where they are often known by other names: Moirai, Parcae, Norns, Triplets, etc.
Most Earthly folklores include the "Bridgets" in their theogony. They are represented as sisters, often in possession of sculpting tools, who look after all things related to the life and death cycles. These legends are all wrong about one important thing, though. They're colleagues who get along so well that you'd swear they were all related, but they're not. Mary-Bridget, for example, joined the group in 455 before humanity. What's more, she also has to keep it to herself that her real name is Mary-Bridget and not simply Bridget. It's a matter of standing.
— Order of the day, girls: Prophecies.
— Oh noooo! Again?
— Urrgh ... Prophecies, that's just another fancy name to hide the files that management is more than capable of processing themselves.
— Oh, I know what you mean. I totally agree. Right, let's get it over and done with. Bridge, where did you put your scissors?
— Ah, I left them on Mary's desk.
— Bridget.
— Yes, alright, alright, Mary-Bridget ...
The 'Bridgets' are a singular entity composed of various limbs constricted around their pale-white arms, their faces obscured by their hoods revealing only a toothy grin and two noses protruding outwards. The 'Bridgets' brandish a spindle, a knife and a giant pair of scissors, which they use to horrifying effect.
- #36Pump Quinn
Keys: Quinn, Pump Quinn, staff, pumpkin, intern
Ever since childhood, Pump has been a big fan of Death's career. Their room at their parents' house is plastered with posters of Death, Inc.'s founder at the height of his power. It also contains a collection of merchandise of all types, from the most common to the rarest of limited-edition collector's items. A graduate of the Sepulchral School of Eternal Vanity Management (SSEVM), Pump had their sights set on an internship with Death, Inc. Thanks to a lot of determination (and insistence), Pump found a place managing the agenda of Death himself! This news made it the second-greatest day of their non-life.
Pump is passionate about Death's work and has shown such great and pure fervor that mystical powers have awakened in their subconscious. Pump is truly gifted at teleportation, which should be a huge asset to the boss, even though the other employees like to take advantage of it to make Pump bring them koffees. Likewise, Pump can fully regenerate, even if you squish their pumpkin head! Handy. Pump secretly dreams of developing a brand, just like they were taught in school. Taking inspiration from the very best, wearing a hooded cloak, using a killer name — why not Pump Quinn, the Jack -o' -Lantern Supreme?
The circumstances of Pump Quinn's death are troubling. According to Patrick, Pump's soul couldn't have been more than nine years old when they showed up at reception. Below is an excerpt from a comment written in the personal statement box on the death registration form: "I'm really good at hide-and-seek, you know! When I was playing at school, I could hide for hours and hours before anyone would find me. I don't remember much about my last game, though. I think I hid in a trash bag. It was really tough to tie the knot from the inside. And then there were some funny noises, a super bright light, then ... I don't really remember!"
Pump Quinn appears to be a small humanoid being with a pumpkin with two round eyes for a head, a happy face, is wearing a working suit, and is holding a piece of paper.
Pump Quinn is an eager person that will do anything to make Death proud.
- #37Jerry
Keys: skeleton, staff, employee, union rep, Jerry · Secondary:
A complainer, a bit of a lazybones, provocative, and quick to anger, Jerry is practically part of the furniture at Death, Inc. He's a wily employee who knows how to get through to management by browbeating them "just the right amount" until he gets what he wants. He's often accused of being a "big slacker", which really annoys him! Nevertheless, he's one of the only ones to put his colleagues' wellbeing first and to enforce a work-life balance at Death, Inc. He would rather describe himself as "the last bastion of making the least effort".
Despite the vehement criticisms against him, Jerry has had a successful career within the union. In 1975, he managed to cut the 35-hour work week down to 32 hours, and he'll boast to anyone who'll listen about how much better that is than on the surface! But his greatest victory was in 1988, when, after four eons of carefully navigated protests and negotiations, Jerry finally convinced management to install a decent koffee machine in the break room. Koffee is a key factor in employee satisfaction.
The circumstances of Jerry's death are actually quite embarrassing, and he would like them to be permanently deleted from Death, Inc.'s archives... For that, he will need to convince Patrick to break with regulations, which may be his toughest negotiation yet! During his lifetime, Jerry worked in a factory of a multinational dairy company. In protest of the disgusting production conditions, he organized a sit-in dressed as a cat. Unfortunately, he got run over by a truck. Since then, Jerry prefers to get around by bicycle, and he hates cats.
Jerry appears to be a small skeleton with a large crack on his head.
- #38Joe
Keys: treasurer, staff, employee, coffee, human, Joe · Secondary:
This is what happens when you drink too much black koffee! In fact, the koffee Joe drinks is now so strong, it once got him in a chokehold. Well, not the koffee itself, of course, but rather the sugar lump he likes to dip in it to warm himself up. Since he's incapable of focusing on anything for longer than a second, he accidentally mixed up his usual cube of sugar with a stock cube that expired three years ago.
Joe is one of Death, Inc.'s most exemplary employees. He has already dedicated over a gazillion hours to filing and keeping the monstrous inventory of life forces across the company's various earthly planes up to date. And all that without even taking a proper break. His secret? A cup with a melted plastic bottom that smells exactly like Joe's favorite koffee. Seems obvious, doesn't it? A positive attitude is all you need to be an effective employee.
"AaaaaaaaaaaAARRRRRGHHHH!"
A tip from Jerry's ill-thought-out April Fool's prank: Never replace Joe's koffee with black tea!
He appears to be a small human with a visor cap on his head. He always has a coffee on hand.
- #39Patrick
Keys: glasses, receptionist, employee, Patrick, human · Secondary:
Patrick Thuggins was the victim of a terrible prank at the company he worked at while he was alive. Blind as a bat, someone stole his glasses "for a laugh" and poor old Patrick unwittingly overcooked his favorite dish at the company restaurant. He remembered to pierce the lid with a fork, but accidentally heated it in the nuclear reactor instead of the microwave.
Once he landed at Death, Inc., Patrick headed straight to the reception with all the other souls and waited for hours in the waiting room before the Work Accidents Department picked up his file. He didn't mind one bit, since it gave him a chance to pursue one of his favorite hobbies — reading the Closer to Death, a little gem of a gossip rag that you no longer find in the supermarkets!
Our receptionist normally plays his cards close to his chest, but he definitely knows a thing or two about scrapbooking! His desk is covered in photos of brightly colored birds, crepe paper rolls, and unusual stickers that he makes himself to express his passion. Don't forget to compliment him on his creations! He might not show it, but Patrick is a highly skilled receptionist and would be very pleased to hear it.
He appears to be an ordinary human with glasses in an office uniform. He has a fake knife on his head in the form of a headband, too embarrassed to confess the true reason he died.
- #40Mr. O'Shah
Tony O'Shah has never smiled once in his whole life. And he's not about to start now. Well okay, he does smile sometimes, but only on those rare occasions when his natural cynicism bears witness to the irony of a truly scathing situation. Like when a colleague finds themself locked in a copy room for days.
Nobody knows exactly how Mr. O'Shah ended up as the Health and Safety Inspector at Death, Inc. Even Death himself seems to dodge the question. He always gives the same non-committal reply: "Just like everyone else here, Death requires a resume. And I just love finding one that's chock-full of mistakes. It makes my job particularly interesting. Especially when it becomes even more unpleasant for the person I'm investigating."
Anyone consulting Mr. O'Shah about a concern or a request regarding the Health and Safety department should be very careful... If he turns to you with a menacing smile on his face and a glint in his eye, despite the darkness of his coffin, you'll know he's on to you. Or he's about to send you back to the land of the living at a particularly dark point in history. Like when Eurodance was popular.
Mr. O'Shah appears as a lanky individual that never leaves his coffin. He is covered in shadows with only his thin legs, arms, and front visible at any time, giving him a somewhat ominous appearance. He is often seen dryly going through his book.
When talking he is quite animated with his expressions and hand movement.
Mr. O'Shah is a rather cynical, sarcastic and somewhat sadistic individual, treating work with utmost seriousness, yet taking delight when others land in hot-waters be it by themselves or his doing. Even Death himself is not exempt from Mr. O'Shah's attitude as he exhibits some joy whenever he gets to hand out curses and often casts doubt on Death's choices.
- #41Mark
Keys: Mark, food, snack manager, employee, human, truck
When he was alive, Mark used to work on a cool TV show bringing science to the masses. That's where he developed his particularly friendly way of talking to his customers. He drove the truck that served as a backdrop to the shows; a funny guy who was always ready with a wink and a joke or two.
Unfortunately, the show came to a brutal end after his tragic murder by a dark organization that was buying out independent TV shows to inflate its ratings. Mark was welcomed by Death, Inc. with open arms. However, this meant dumbed-down science displays were now off the table. In the words of Death himself, "I like you, Marky, but stop asking me for my swizzle sticks to build your models." Mark is well-loved within the company... So much so, his social calendar is booked up months in advance. He's a very (overly) chatty gentleman, so it's only natural that his dates and failed attempts at relationships are stacking up!
"But, erm... Is your amputated hand supposed to be doing that, Mark?"
"Huh? What's that, love?"
"Well, it's making a not-so-nice gesture with the middle finger. It's not very polite..."
"Oh no, take no notice of that; it just wants attention. You know, actually, it's not really my hand. It's an old robot hand I found in a used equipment box that Jacob was planning on throwing away. Still, it's pretty smart and a fantastic engineer. Not too fond of meat, though. I don't know why. Just one whiff of meat, and bam. One scent. And it lashes out!"
Mark appears to be a dismembered human who always has a smile.
- #42Jacob
Keys: control room, Jacob, staff, blacksmith, employee, kiln, technical manager
Back when time began, Death forged his own Scythe and enchanted it with his own skeletal hands. Over the course of his travels across the various planes of existence, he got to know Jacob, a monstrous kiln filled with molten lava. Jacob accepted Death's offer of a drink, and they started swapping trading cards. Jacob was pretty happy, since he'd assumed he was the only nerd dorky enough to play A Thousand Legends of Thousands of Rings.
"Hands off my cards. They hold many fond memories of games with my friend and Master. Don't touch them, or else pain worse than death will fall upon you. Seriously, I'm not playing around."
Jacob is large and is only located in the Control Room.
- #43Orville
Keys: cauldron, control room, staff, blacksmith, employee, Orville, sticky notes
Orville has been here a long while. His first job at Death, Inc. was to shadow his great-great uncle Jacob to learn the art of ancient blacksmithing. All in all, it was a bit of a failure. He couldn't figure out how to use the equipment, and the other employees at the company weren't always very kind with the enchanted teenage cauldron. "You're here to learn the ropes!" Jacob used to grumble at him.
After launching his own start-up with his friends from engineering school, Orville used the subsidies he received to finance his own inventions. These harebrained gadgets weren't much use to anyone, but they were proof of the engineer's technological prowess. Thanks to his dissertation on the symbiosis between start-of-the-art technology and traditional alchemy, he managed to graduate with flying colors.
"So, kid? Glad to be back? And as the boss this time. R&D Operator is quite the role."
"Yeah, sure. Since uncle's struggling a bit with the 'newfangled' methods, I'm here to help out."
"Yep. Now, let's get back to work. What did you have in mind for this sprint?"
"Okay, two secs, Chief. I had it written down on a post-it. I think it's stuck to my back. Hang on, erm..."
Orville looks like an upside down cauldron with long stick legs and arms. What is supposed to be their face is a bunch of sticky notes attached to the front with eyes and a mouth.
- #44Harriet
Keys: Harriet, skin, Coach, staff, employee, human, business coach
Great-great-great-to-the-power-of-n distant second cousin of Death, Harriet could have taken up a similar career, but she instead opted to try her luck at the 2098 Extreme Olympic Games before passing away in a dramatic hang-gliding javelin-throwing competition. Where does she get all her energy from? Jerry claims she drinks really sugary koffee when nobody's looking, and Orville thinks she's propped up by cybernetic prostheses that kick in when she starts to flag... Harriet has another explanation: pure talent.
A total sports enthusiast — especially when it comes to the most dangerous ones — Harriet is in incredible shape! She has beaten Jacob at arm wrestling multiple times and can do exactly 1,544 more squats and 230 more push-ups than Brad. This has earned our tireless coach his undying admiration. The only person who can beat her in terms of strength, speed, and endurance is Death himself... at the very height of his power, of course! This is what motivates Death, Inc.'s boss to keep up his training so he can regain his former glory and claw his way back to the top of the podium.
"Yes, even today, I still hold the record for holding my breath in a volcano. I'm waiting to meet someone brave enough to take on the Great Sulfur with me. I'm absolutely willing to put my title at stake! Come at me, guys! Bathing suits and nose plugs aren't necessary — they'll never withstand the heat of the magma!"
Harriet is a human with no skin to speak of. She is only ever seen with a whistle around her neck. Harriet is usually seen with a wide smile despite her skinless state. Her eyes seem to be almost bulging out of her head and pointing in opposite directions, left eye is seen occasionally twitching.
- #45Jocelyn
Keys: , Jocelyn, flux logistics, elevator, employee
Jocelyn began her career as the second ever Death, Inc. employee. She was hired right after the Cloak. Can you believe it? She was initially hired as the hourglass, but her formidable efficiency soon saw her rising through the ranks. The CEO promoted her to the role of water clock, and then, after numerous negotiations during which Jocelyn demonstrated her hunger to succeed, she became Flux Logistics Manager. In plain English, this means her essence controls the network of Death, Inc.'s elevators. It goes without saying that she is, single-handedly, the heart and soul of the whole company. Well... Although she is a bit scary, Jocelyn has always put this trait to good use: Thanks to the right training and a big smile, your elevator phobia is now a thing of the past!
Jocelyn's unwavering asset is her punctuality, combined with an insatiable appetite for company gossip. Her ability to be everywhere at once allows her to hear everything that's going on at all times, and to gain first-hand knowledge of all the rumors making the rounds in the break room and through the corridors of the various departments. It's what she calls the perks of the job. As Jocelyn says, "Elevators have ears... No need to google it — if you heard it from me, it must be true."
Every work day begins with the same ritual, which even Death has to follow: the MFCC's (Mortuary Flux Collaboration Charter) B-66 circular must be completed. Jocelyn makes sure of it! It's not possible to take an elevator up or down — or to move around within the corporation, period — without having first completed this administrative formality. It's not that difficult; it simply requires a quick signature, two or three things to do for the day, and Bob's your uncle! What's more, Jocelyn very generously lets you choose. (She doesn't have to tell you it's mandatory, of course.)
Jocelyn appears as a large white flame entity that operates inside the elevator. Her eyes and smile are pitch black. Her long arms reach out from the elevator.
- #46Claude
Keys: disco, accountant, staff, employee, Claude
When he was alive, Claude Izcoe worked as a credit analyst for a small company that made stage costumes. Its biggest client was a drag queen production company. After thirty years of loyal service, far removed from the glitz and glamor, Claude ended up passing away during his very own retirement party. The mirror ball hanging over the dancefloor came loose and landed smack bang in the middle of his skull. Nowadays, his grave is a constant wash of hundreds of colors and his epitaph a perfect reflection of who he was: May you find your way to Paradisco.
Claude's damned soul must have gotten lost somewhere along the way. Either that, or he wasn't ready to hang up his calculator just yet, so he sent his resume into Death, Inc. as soon as he heard the accounting department was hiring. He wasn't offered the position right away, because Claude's soul showed up to the interview without his head! His torso, arms, and legs floated in all by themselves. The level of administrative confusion was Dantesque, because nobody knew whether it might just be a simple ghost who'd decided to worm their way into the Death, Inc. workforce.
When looking through his soul registration file, Patrick and Chantal, the accounting manager and head archivist, soon found a solution to the problem. By adorning Claude's decapitated spectral body with a brand new mirror ball, he could once again converse normally! Well. Thereabouts. Claudie, as he is known, is well-liked within the company. He's a highly knowledgeable, chatty, and enthusiastic colleague, who is never short on humor or generosity.
Claude is unable to speak differently, only in muffled words.
- #47Muriel
Keys: , artist, painter, performer, Muriel, human
On Earth, Ms. Muriel the Reverent (Note: Despite the excellent research abilities of Death, Inc.'s archive team, we are unable to confirm whether that's actually her real name, or perhaps some fanciful nom de plume) was a highly controversial artist who causes quite the stir in the gossip rags wherever she went. Each of her works was so controversial that they all, without fail, ended up causing some sort of argument. While intellectuals came to blows on TV sets, Muriel simply went on smiling her enigmatic smile. Her rare contributions were limited to a few maxims of her own creation, which proved to be as cryptic as they were convoluted.
Like many of her fellow artists, Muriel went through periods where a pictorial style, a particular fantasy, became a running theme throughout her work. During the 60s, she went through her "Rebellion" phase. She caught numerous political figures in pacifist attacks where the victim always ended up splashed or splattered in paint applied through the medium of home-made paint bombs. Muriel's life was tragically cut short during her "Love Hurts" phase, when she developed a fascination for acupuncture. her final artistic performance was to dive into three different polls. The first was filled with black paint, the second with feathers, and the third pool with steel pins. As you may have guessed, the third pool ended in a blood bath.
Muriel the Reverent is one of the rare damned souls to have skipped almost all the classic administrative steps needed to find eternal peace. In light of her multiple artistic performances in which she had tried numerous times to bring about her untimely death "in the name of glory, style, and the shock-factor," Death decided to grant her temporary amnesty under one condition: She was to depict Death, Inc's boss's greatest conquests thorough works of art of her creation. While Death may give the appearance of being fed up with Muriel's outlandish ravings, deep down he quite enjoys being Ms. Reverent's muse!
- #48Burt
Keys: engineer, Burt, staff, employee, human
Prior to his tragic death caused by slipping on a discarded banana peel and being impaled on a signpost, Mason "Burt" Stanley was an urban engineering expert — a master in geometry. One big problem for this damned soul is that he showed up at the front desk still carrying the aforementioned signpost. Unfortunately, back then, customers couldn't get adequate funeral cover if they were in possession of personal effects not authorized by Death, Inc.'s regulation. So Mason had to wait in line for several months, until circular D-34-D came into effect.
Once Burt's file had finally cleared Patrick Thuggin's extensive process, another sizable problem came to light: How was he going to enter the Well of Souls with that signpost stuck firmly in his spectral body? The best solution was to find him a job at the company. But this brought its own complications — namely, how would he be able to comfortably work at the company when it was in no way suited to someone with his disability? Access, security... You name it" There was no accommodation in place for it. "Don't act like you know what you're talking about! We're not set up to hire people with disabilities — that's the issue! It has to be said!" admits Jerry, company social and economic committee representative.
— Erm... Did you hit your head or something? Why are you walking around with that thing?
— Whoa, dude! Did you hear that, Burt? Hey, he's a person with feelings, you know, just like you.
— Hang on: Calm down and look over your shoulder, numskull! You've got the Industrial Pollution Department's floor plan stuck to you!
— Huh, what...? Ah, poop! You're kidding me!
— Who's ablest now, eh? You forgot Burt!
— Don't be daft, I didn't forget... I... Ah, poopity poop poop, I'll be right back. I'll take the elevator and go get him.
