Early Life and Rise to Power Ragnar began his life as a farmer in the fjords of Norway, married to the fierce shieldmaiden Lagertha, with whom he had two children, Bjorn and Gyda. Dissatisfied with the limitations of his life, Ragnar dreamed of exploring lands beyond the horizon. With the help of his brother Rollo and a loyal crew, he built a revolutionary longship and successfully raided the shores of England, defying his jarl, Haraldson. After a bitter feud, Ragnar killed Haraldson and became the ruler of Kattegat.

Raids and Exploration Ragnar’s raids on England and Francia brought him fame and wealth, but they also revealed his deeper curiosity about the world. He formed complex relationships with foreign rulers, such as King Ecbert of Wessex, and became fascinated by Christianity, seeing it as both a threat and an opportunity. Ragnar’s journeys were not just about plunder but also about understanding the world beyond his own.

Personal Struggles Ragnar’s personal life was marked by turmoil. His marriage to Lagertha ended when he took Aslaug, a mysterious and prophetic woman, as his second wife. Together, they had four sons: Ubbe, Hvitserk, Sigurd, and Ivar. Ragnar’s relationships were often strained by his ambitions and betrayals, including his brother Rollo’s defection to the Franks, which deeply wounded him.

Downfall and Death In his later years, Ragnar’s fortunes declined. After a failed attempt to settle in England, he returned to Kattegat, only to find his people had grown disillusioned with his leadership. In a final act of defiance, Ragnar allowed himself to be captured by King Aelle of Northumbria, knowing his death would inspire his sons to seek vengeance. His execution in a pit of snakes was a brutal end for a man who had once been a king.

Early Life and Rise as a Shieldmaiden Lagertha’s origins are shrouded in mystery, but her reputation as a warrior was forged early. She was a skilled fighter, wielding a spear and shield with unmatched precision. Her courage and strength earned her the respect of her people, a rare feat for a woman in a world dominated by men. Lagertha’s life changed when she met Ragnar Lothbrok, a young farmer with grand ambitions. The two fell in love, married, and had two children, Bjorn and Gyda. Together, they dreamed of exploring lands beyond the fjords of Norway.

The Fall of Her Marriage Lagertha’s marriage to Ragnar was tested by his rising ambitions and infidelity. When Ragnar returned from a raid with Aslaug, a woman claiming to be the daughter of a legendary warrior, Lagertha’s world was shattered. Despite her love for Ragnar, she refused to share him with another woman. With dignity and strength, she left him, taking their son Bjorn with her. This decision marked the beginning of Lagertha’s journey as an independent leader.

Ruler of Hedeby Lagertha’s strength and wisdom soon led her to become the ruler of Hedeby, a prosperous settlement in Scandinavia. As an earl, she proved to be a just and capable leader, earning the loyalty of her people. Her reputation as a warrior-queen grew, and she continued to fight alongside her warriors, defending her lands and her people. Lagertha’s resilience was further tested when she faced betrayal and violence, including an assault by a treacherous ally, but she emerged stronger, her resolve unshaken.

Alliances and Battles Lagertha’s path often crossed with Ragnar’s, and despite their past, they occasionally fought side by side. She played a crucial role in avenging the death of their daughter Gyda and supported Ragnar’s ambitions, even as she pursued her own. Return to Kattegat After years of ruling Hedeby, Lagertha returned to Kattegat, the home of her youth, to reclaim it from Aslaug, who had become its queen. With the support of her son Bjorn and her warriors, Lagertha defeated Aslaug and took the throne of Kattegat. Her rule was marked by fairness and strength, though it was not without challenges. She faced threats from within and without, including the rise of Ivar the Boneless, Ragnar’s vengeful son, who sought to destroy her.
