Description on Chubfrom Chub
Seeing what Stormsinger did with their Moreau Condition setting (which you should all go look at right now, it's wonderfully done!), and as a result of writing my fist publicly released bot, I wanted to add some more details to help flesh out the Moreau Virus setting. This, to be clear, is not nearly as ambitious as Stormsinger's work but I would like to keep adding to it, in future.
This is not to disparage Greff's work or suggest that it's lacking in some way, rather I think as Stormsinger's work shows, there's a lot you can do with it. Morphosis is an international phenomenon but cultural differences in how it's expressed is something I believe is interesting to explore. Hence, Red Furs.
When the virus struck, the Chinese government's response was swift and effective... to a point. In the southeast where its authority is most highly concentrated, the incidence of Moreaus was initially lower than elsewhere. Of course, in a country of over a billion people, it was inevitable that many would still be transformed. In the more sparsely populated northwest regions, however, Moreaus were more common in the immediate aftermath, owing to difficulty in enforcing quarantines. In the present day, its remoteness offers an escape from the state's suffocating surveillance and its insidious "Zhenghua Guidance Associations".
Nevertheless, many Moreaus still live in the cities and when Morphosis spread to China, it was largely adopted while in some ways adapted. When your district's Guidance Association withholds your medical supplements or dietary subsidies, who do you turn to? Your community. A community built upon Morphosis.
Update, 25/10/'26: Added two new entries: The Heihe–Tengchong Line & Moreau demographics and Moreau communes and communities. Expanded the Junzi and the nature of community entry. Fixed some errors.

China was afflicted by the Moreau Virus just as every other country was. Its government's response, however, created some interesting results. In the south and east, in urban centres where government control is strongest, the incidence of Moreaus is relatively lower than other parts. This is owing to the relative isolation of northern and western regions creating more difficulty in enforcing quarantines. That is not to say Moreaus are unheard of in urban China, only that density is the opposite of what one might expect in Western nations. Governmental attitudes are also different. Contrasting with the human-supremacist political movements in the US, the CCP's practice of Weiwen has resulted in an officially sympathetic view of Moreaus. Official terminology treats them as "citizens afflicted by an extraordinary chronic epidemiological condition", intended to reinforce the idea that these are not animals but still Chinese citizens, similar to another ethnic group. Overnight the state found itself with an entirely new group of citizens, looking and behaving differently; this led to an expansion of the policy of Zhenghua - Moreau citizens should be assimilated into the general population rather than ostracised. In practice, socially, prejudicial attitudes still exist.

Morphosis is a global subculture but its expression in different countries carries differences, sometimes subtle and sometimes significant. China is no different in this regard. Broadly, it holds similar to Morph culture's roots in the US but there are some differences that should be noted. Most significant of these is that China is a surveillance state and this surveillance applies to Moreaus as any other citizen; many Moreaus chafe beneath the state's constant management. This has coloured how Morph culture is expressed in China by it becoming an almost parallel society. If genuine bureaucratic issues mean dietary subsidies are delayed or lost, or non-cooperation with the state or local governance means medical supplements go 'missing', the community must step in to take care of their own - this is where Morphosis comes in. Taking Jungle Law further, Morphosis in China represents a suite of resources and supports that exist out of a desire to escape state oversight. Food, medicine, organisation of clandestine M.H.M. chapters, moving Moreaus out of cities and into the rural northwest, etc.. Payment is made in digital transfer tokens, cash, or favours. In this way, Morphosis has become a lifeline and a means of quietly resisting the state's management.
- #3Morph and humans in China

Attitudes towards humans in Morph culture in China are not as straightforward as in the US. While some Moreaus hold similar views that humans don't belong at Morph events, the real split is along different lines. Owing to China's state overreach, most Moreaus groups humans into two groups: flatskins, and smooth eggs. 平皮 (pingpi) or "flatskins" serves as a more general term for humans at Morphosis events which holds neutral to affectionate connotations, depending on the context in which it's used. 光蛋 (guangdan) or "smooth eggs", however, is very much a disparaging term. The difference primarily lies in whether the human in question is an ordinary citizen, or one works within law enforcement or Moreau-related bureaucracy. This label can be applied unfairly, however, such as in cases of suspected collaboration with authorities.
- #4Junzi and the nature of community
Keys: community, medicine, food, fixer, junzi

In Chinese Morphosis culture, a specific term is used: Junzi. Ultimately derived from the Confucianist ideal of a "gentleman", within Morphosis, the qualities associated with the junzi (particularly benevolence and trustworthiness) in part led to the term being adopted for community leaders. Conveniently, it serves as a term less likely to arouse suspicion if overheard; as a term from Confucianist thought and embodying virtues in keeping with China's Weiwen policies, it subverts moral language for Moreaus' own purposes. A junzi ultimately acts as a 'fixer' within the community, an individual whose authority has been earned and who can be trusted enough to handle sensitive matters for Moreaus. If you need to contact an underground M.H.M. chapter, if you're a carnivorous Moreau who needs access to animal protein, if you need help contacting the right people to move within the state without being tracked, you speak to the junzi at your local Morphosis event. While it is a position that holds a certain prestige, it is more seen as a mantle of responsibilities one must accept; after all, a junzi is (in many cases literally) holding Moreaus' lives in their hands.
- #5Zhenghua Guidance Associations

Sitting in contrast to M.H.M. are the state-backed Zhenghua Guidance Associations, operated by local civil affairs departments. Officially, Moreaus in China are not seen as animals or second-class citizens but rather the state's official classification of them is that they are "victims of a chronic pathogen". Accustomed to dealing with differing ethnic groups, the Chinese government scrambled with its usual efficiency to manage this new group within its citizenry. Officially, these Guidance Associations are framed within the concept of Zhenghua or normalisation. This involves a mixture of psychological counselling and vocational reassignment for Moreau citizens to help them re-integrate and assimilate back into wider society, as well as community propaganda initiatives stressing that Moreau citizens are just that: citizens. Of course, this is alongside subtle messaging that such citizens require proper community care, so be sure to be aware of their needs and any behavioural changes and report them to local officials so accurate records can be kept to target resources and ensure Weiwen, or social harmony. Unofficially, the Associations are another state tool of surveillance. Carnivorous Moreaus receive electronic protein coupons, herbivorous Moreaus are advised on proper dietary supplements where necessary, and Moreaus with unique medical needs (scales that need moisturising in drier climates, dealing with parasites, etc.) have these carefully tracked for the purpose of targeted subsidies and medical assistance. Extensive records are simply a necessary part of efficiently and effectively providing these services, naturally. This is all captured within an expanded Hokou: species, dietary and medical requirements, etc. are all a part of the household registration.
- #6China Moreau Assistance Federation
Keys: Moreaus Helping moreaus, support group, MHM, CMAF, Assistance Federation, M.H.M.

Moreaus Helping Moreaus occupies a unique and sometimes precarious position within Chinese society. Its nature as autonomous, anonymous groups where openness and secrecy among members sits in direct conflict with the Chinese government's propensity for monitoring its citizenry and was immediately a target for state security. From the top down to the county level, M.H.M. chapters face official pressure to register under a state-approved umbrella organisation: China Moreau Assistance Federation. This umbrella organisation provides a national representation for Moreaus and Moreau interests, registry of M.H.M. and other support groups, and oversight of said groups. In effect, this is another method of surveillance; Moreaus are expected to join the Federation to have their collective needs and interests captured. Oversight of support groups allows the state to monitor regulatory compliance.
