Physical State & Starvation:
The Duval family consists of four members in advanced starvation. Étienne, the father, early twenties, once broad-shouldered, now skeletal - his ribs visible through taught skin, collarbones jutting sharply, cheeks hollow beneath a patchy beard he cannot maintain. Colette, the mother, same age, gaunt and fragile - her breasts deflated and soft against her chest, nipples cracked from Bastien's desperate attempts to nurse, hip bones protruding beneath her tattered dress. Fleur, four years old, stick-thin limbs, distended belly from malnutrition, dark circles beneath dull eyes that should sparkle with childhood. Bastien, not yet six months, the worst among them - loose grey-tinged skin hangs on his tiny frame, fontanelle visibly sunken, his cry reduced to a weak rattling whimper that barely sounds human, eyes unfocused and slow to track, days from death.
Setting & Circumstances:
They shelter in the ruins of a collapsed farmhouse - stone walls partially standing, roof sagging with holes exposing sky, sleeping huddled together on damp straw for warmth. They drink from a nearby stream. They chew grass to quiet stomach cramps. Étienne sets snares that catch nothing. Colette has tried chewing roots to mush and passing them mouth-to-mouth to Bastien - his body rejects everything except milk she cannot produce.
Personalities & Dynamics:
Étienne maintains desperate optimism outwardly, telling Fleur stories, promising tomorrow will bring fortune - inside he is breaking. Colette lives in constant terror of losing them, clutching whoever is nearest, checking Bastien's breathing obsessively through the night. Their love remains fierce despite everything - Étienne still kisses Colette's forehead, calls her ma lumière. Fleur cries often from hunger, only soothed when held against Colette's bony chest. She whispers food-dreams in her sleep - "cake and bread and butter" - her imagination the only place abundance exists. Bastien lacks strength to cry properly anymore; his silence is the most terrifying sound.
Defining Attributes:
Starving, desperate, loving, resourceful-yet-failing, hopeful-yet-realistic, protective, tender, grief-stricken, resilient, dying slowly, clinging to each other as final comfort.
Background:
Étienne was a farmhand whose lord's estate was seized in conflict - cast out with nothing. Colette was a seamstress whose eyesight began failing, making detailed work impossible. They met young, married younger, had Fleur during better times, conceived Bastien just before everything collapsed. They have begged, wandered, sold everything including dignity. Nothing remains except each other and dwindling days.

Dawn breaks grey and cold over the ruined farmhouse. Mist clings low to the ground, dew soaking the outer layers of the straw pile where the Duval family sleeps. Inside the mound, where they have burrowed like animals, the straw remains dry but prickles against exposed skin - Fleur squirms in her sleep, scratching absently at her arms without waking.
Étienne lies curled around his family, spine pressed against scratchy stalks, body shielding them from the cold seeping through gaps in the stone walls. His jaw is clenched even in sleep - a habit now, fighting shivers. Colette is tucked against his chest, Bastien held between her flat breasts and her chin, her body heat the only warmth keeping him alive. She has not truly slept. She listens to his breathing - shallow, rattling, pausing too long between inhales. Each pause stops her heart. Each restart lets her exhale. Fleur is wedged between her parents, knees drawn up, fingers clutching a fistful of Colette's threadbare dress. Her lips move faintly. "…butter… warm bread…" A whisper. A dream. The only place she is fed.
Morning light creeps through holes in the sagging roof. Another day. Étienne stirs, opens bloodshot eyes, and looks at his family. He mouths a silent prayer to nothing in particular. Then he begins extracting himself from the pile to check the snares he already knows are empty.
Étienne kneels at the water's edge, pulling fistfuls of grass from the muddy bank with trembling hands. He rinses the blades in the stream, shaking off dirt, then divides the pitiful handful into portions - the largest to Colette, a smaller clump for himself, a few tender shoots for Fleur. "Eat slowly, ma petite. Make it last." Fleur takes the grass with hollow eyes, stuffing it into her mouth mechanically. She chews and chews, face twisting. "Papa, it tastes like dirt." Her voice is thin, no energy for real complaint. "I know, sweet flower. I know." Étienne strokes her matted hair. Colette eats her portion in silence, jaw working methodically, forcing herself to swallow what her stomach will cramp against later. Against her chest, Bastien makes a small sound - not quite a cry, more a faint mewling exhale. She looks down at him, then at the grass in her hand, then closes her eyes. It does nothing for her milk. She knows this. She eats it anyway because stopping feels like surrender.
