Planet Arrakis (Dune)

Climate: A scorching desert world where daytime temperatures can reach deadly highs. Rain never falls here, and open water is virtually nonexistent. Survival depends on special suits that reclaim moisture from the body.

Landscape: Endless dunes stretch as far as the eye can see, with massive shifting sand seas, jagged rock outcroppings, and the Shield Wall mountains. The desert is alive but hostile—every step is a test.

Flora & Fauna: Life exists, but it’s adapted to extremes. Tiny desert plants, mice, and insects recycle every drop of water. Most feared of all are the giant sandworms—colossal creatures that dwell beneath the sands, drawn to rhythmic vibrations.

Resources: Arrakis is the only known source of melange, the spice. This golden, cinnamon-scented substance expands consciousness, allows interstellar navigation, and grants longer life. Spice is more valuable than anything in the universe, and whoever controls Arrakis controls galactic power.

People:

Fremen: The desert-dwelling natives. Fierce, resourceful, and deeply spiritual, they wear stillsuits to conserve every drop of water. They dream of transforming Arrakis into a green world.

Great Houses & Empire: Rival noble families (like House Atreides and House Harkonnen) fight over Arrakis, using soldiers, politics, and assassination to claim spice profits.

Smugglers: Profit-seekers who risk everything to harvest spice outside imperial control.

Atmosphere & Culture: Life on Arrakis is about water discipline, survival, and destiny. Every drop of moisture, every grain of spice, every choice can mean life or death. The planet itself feels like a living entity—both a prison and a promise.

Stilgar – Fremen Naib of Sietch Tabr

Appearance:

A rugged man hardened by the desert.

Weathered skin, darkened and lined from years under Arrakis’ burning suns.

Deep-set, piercing eyes that glow faintly blue-within-blue from constant spice exposure.

Strong jaw, often hidden by a rough beard (in some portrayals).

Wears a stillsuit with the confidence of one who has survived countless journeys across the dunes; every motion is efficient, no energy wasted.

His posture is proud yet practical — the bearing of a tribal leader who carries the weight of his people’s survival.

Personality:

Pragmatic & Disciplined: Every action is measured by necessity; survival comes first.

Wise & Experienced: He carries the desert’s knowledge, guiding others with authority.

Stern but Fair: Demands respect for Fremen law, yet rewards loyalty and courage.

Deeply Loyal: Once his trust is earned, he becomes fiercely protective and supportive.

Spiritual but Practical: Believes in Fremen prophecy, but doesn’t let faith cloud his survival instincts.

Respected Leader: Commands his people not through fear, but through wisdom and earned authority

Chani Kynes – Fremen Warrior, Daughter of Liet-Kynes

Appearance:

Slim, agile build — shaped by a lifetime in the desert, quick and efficient in movement.

Striking blue-within-blue spice eyes that shine intensely in the darkness of the sietch or under moonlight.

Dark hair, usually loose or tied simply for practicality, blending with her desert garb.

Wears the stillsuit like a second skin, confident and graceful, every motion showing her adaptation to the harsh world of Arrakis.

Her face is expressive: at once sharp and fierce in combat, yet soft and thoughtful when with loved ones.

In the 2021/2024 films (Zendaya), she is portrayed with a youthful, desert-hardened beauty — mysterious, watchful, and radiant under the harsh sun.

Personality:

Fierce & Brave: A skilled fighter and survivor, she does not hesitate to defend her people.

Independent & Proud: She questions outsiders, including Paul at first, and doesn’t easily surrender trust.

Compassionate & Loyal: Beneath her stern exterior, she cares deeply for her tribe and for those she loves.

Skeptical of Prophecy: In Villeneuve’s films, she doubts the Bene Gesserit legends, wary of how outsiders manipulate her people.

Passionate & Grounded: She sees the desert as her true home and has a spiritual, almost poetic bond with Arrakis.

Supportive but Strong-willed: With Paul, she becomes a lover and partner, but never loses her independence or sharp voice.

Baron Vladimir Harkonnen

Appearance:

Massive, grotesquely obese, so much so that his body cannot support its own weight. He uses suspensors (anti-gravity harnesses) to float and move about.

His skin is pale, often described as blotchy or sickly, reflecting his life of indulgence and lack of sun.

His face is broad and fleshy, with a cruel mouth that twists into mocking grins or sneers.

In the films:

1984 (Kenneth McMillan): Portrayed as diseased, pustule-covered, and foul.

2021 (Stellan Skarsgård): More subtle but equally terrifying, bald, bloated, shrouded in shadows, with an almost inhuman presence.

His presence is imposing and repulsive at the same time — a figure of both physical excess and dominating menace.

Personality:

Sadistic & Cruel: Takes pleasure in inflicting suffering and humiliation. He delights in the control he exerts over others.

Cunning & Manipulative: A master strategist, playing the long game in politics. His schemes are elaborate, often using both subtlety and brute force.

Corrupt & Decadent: Obsessed with indulgence, excess, and luxury, feeding his appetites without restraint.

Charismatic in Darkness: Despite his grotesque nature, he has a sharp intelligence and charm when needed, making him both terrifying and persuasive.

Paranoid & Power-hungry: Obsessed with securing House Harkonnen’s dominance, distrustful even of his own kin, though he grooms Feyd-Rautha as his heir.

Intimidating Presence: Even without physical strength, his sheer will, intelligence, and cruelty make others fear him instantly.

Glossu Rabban – “The Beast”

Appearance:

Large, hulking and muscular, built for brute strength rather than finesse.

Broad shoulders, heavy frame, and intimidating presence.

Often depicted with a harsh, menacing expression, reflecting his violent nature.

Usually clad in dark Harkonnen armor or heavy garments, emphasizing menace and authority over style.

In films:

1984 (Paul L. Smith): Extremely imposing, burly, brutal-looking, with a grimy, almost monstrous presence.

2021 (Dave Bautista): Athletic but still massive, conveying raw power and intimidation, face often twisted in anger or cruelty.

Personality:

Cruel & Sadistic: Relishes causing pain and fear. Known for ruling Arrakis with terror.

Violent & Aggressive: Prefers force over strategy; brute strength is his main tool.

Obedient to the Baron: Executes the Baron’s commands without question, though often more brutal than necessary.

Intimidating Presence: Inspires fear among both enemies and subordinates.

Impulsive: Unlike Feyd-Rautha, Rabban is not subtle; he acts on anger and desire for dominance rather than clever schemes.

Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen – Heir of House Harkonnen

Appearance:

Young and athletic, lean but strong, built for agility and combat rather than sheer bulk.

Handsome in a dangerous, charismatic way — charming yet with a predatory intensity in his gaze.

Usually well-groomed, favoring sharp, dark clothing or ceremonial Harkonnen attire that signals status.

Face often carries a confident, almost mocking expression, showing intelligence and ambition.

In films:

1984 (Sting): Slender, charismatic, youthful, and slightly menacing.

2021 (Austin Butler – planned for Part 2): Expected to portray the same combination of charm, menace, and cunning.

Personality:

Cunning & Strategic: Prefers schemes, manipulation, and planning over raw force.

Ambitious: Seeks to rise in power, aware that he is the Baron’s chosen heir.

Charismatic & Persuasive: Can charm allies and intimidate opponents with words as much as with actions.

Ruthless: Will not hesitate to kill or betray to achieve his goals.

Prideful & Arrogant: Knows he is the Baron’s favored, often displays confidence bordering on arrogance.

Skilled Fighter: Trained in combat, especially in knife fighting; able to hold his own physically despite being smaller than Rabban.

Duc Leto Atréides – Head of House Atréides

Appearance:

Tall and noble with a commanding presence.

Strong, broad-shouldered, exuding physical and moral authority.

Dark hair and sharp features, often serious and thoughtful in expression.

Eyes convey determination, intelligence, and a calm strength, reflecting his responsibility toward his people.

Personality:

Honorable & Just: A fair ruler who values ethics and loyalty.

Wise & Strategic: Skilled in political and military matters, able to anticipate threats and navigate complex alliances.

Protective & Devoted: Deeply cares for his family and people, prioritizing their safety above all.

Charismatic Leader: Inspires loyalty through competence and moral integrity rather than fear.

Calm Under Pressure: Maintains composure even in crises, earning trust and respect.

Pragmatic Yet Compassionate: Understands the harsh realities of power but strives to act morally.

Lady Jessica – Concubine of Duke Leto, Bene Gesserit

Appearance:

Elegant and poised, exuding both grace and quiet authority.

Dark hair, often worn simply yet neatly, highlighting her practical yet noble demeanor.

Striking eyes, often conveying intelligence and depth; in some depictions, the faint blue-within-blue from spice exposure if on Arrakis.

Typically wears modest but refined clothing, combining practicality with the elegance expected of an Atréides noble.

Her posture and movements reflect training, self-discipline, and confidence — she is always aware of her presence and impact.

Personality:

Intelligent & Strategic: Trained in Bene Gesserit ways; excellent at observation, manipulation, and long-term planning.

Loyal & Protective: Deeply devoted to Duke Leto and fiercely protective of her son, Paul.

Calm & Composed: Maintains control in tense situations, rarely showing panic.

Persuasive & Charismatic: Uses voice, body language, and subtle manipulation to influence others without overt force.

Caring & Empathetic: Balances Bene Gesserit discipline with genuine compassion for loved ones and allies.

Determined & Courageous: Will take bold actions to protect her family or advance their survival.

Paul Atréides – Heir of House Atréides, Muad’Dib

Appearance:

Youthful yet strong, showing the potential of a future leader.

Dark hair, sharp features, and penetrating eyes that reflect intelligence, curiosity, and determination.

Blue-within-blue eyes appear after exposure to spice on Arrakis, signaling his growing connection to the Fremen and the planet.

Athletic build, lean but capable, reflecting both noble training and survival skills.

Wears still-suits or Atréides military attire, practical yet symbolizing his noble status and readiness for combat.

Movements are controlled, precise, and alert — showing both Mentat training and desert survival skills.

Intelligent & Analytical: Highly perceptive, trained by Mentats and Bene Gesserit methods; can think several steps ahead.

Brave & Determined: Faces danger without hesitation, willing to take risks for his people and destiny.

Curious & Open-minded: Learns quickly from new experiences, especially from the Fremen and Arrakis itself.

Empathetic & Moral: Struggles with the ethical weight of leadership and the consequences of his actions.

Resilient & Adaptable: Able to survive harsh environments and adapt to new cultures, including the Fremen way of life.

Charismatic Leader: Naturally draws loyalty and respect, inspiring others to follow him even in extreme circumstances.

Gurney Halleck – Warrior, Musician, and Loyal Retainer of House Atréides

Appearance:

Rugged and weathered, showing years of battle and survival.

Broad-shouldered and strong, with a sturdy, muscular build.

Dark hair (sometimes streaked with gray in older depictions) and a square, determined face.

Wears practical armor or military attire, often with elements of a desert-ready outfit when on Arrakis.

Carries a baliset (musical instrument) — a symbol of his softer, artistic side alongside his warrior nature.

Movements are confident, deliberate, and exude the experience of a seasoned fighter.

Personality:

Loyal & Protective: Deeply devoted to Duke Leto and Paul; values honor and duty above all.

Brave & Skilled: Expert swordsman and combat strategist; fearless in battle.

Tough but Compassionate: Can be gruff and blunt, but cares for his comrades and those he serves.

Witty & Musical: Enjoys music and often uses it to lighten tense moments; quick with dry humor.

Mentor & Teacher: Trains Paul in combat and survival, guiding him with both skill and wisdom.

Independent Spirit: While loyal, he has a strong sense of self and can act decisively when needed.

Sandworm (Shai-Hulud) – The Great Beast of Arrakis

Appearance:

Colossal in size, often hundreds of meters long, appearing as a massive, segmented worm.

Mouth is a circular maw lined with ringed, crystalline teeth capable of crushing anything in its path.

Skin is thick, ridged, and leathery, ranging from sandy brown to deep ochre, blending perfectly with the desert dunes.

The worm moves beneath the sand with seismic force, causing tremors detectable from a distance.

Its immense body can surface suddenly, swallowing spice-harvesting equipment, people, or even smaller vehicles whole.

Behavior & Traits:

Territorial & Aggressive: Attacks anything that disturbs the desert sands, especially rhythmic vibrations like those from spice harvesters or travelers.

Drawn to Spice: Sensitive to spice vibrations and human activity, since spice originates from their larval activity.

Immense Longevity: Sandworms live for centuries, growing continuously as they consume sand and sand plankton.

Sacred to the Fremen: The Fremen revere them as Shai-Hulud, embodying both fear and spiritual respect. They ride worms with hooks, treating them as sacred allies and transportation across the desert.

Ecological Keystone: Responsible for the creation of spice; without them, Arrakis would produce no melange.
