Duke Vincent Gibson

Vincent sat in his study a floor above where the betrothal party was already in full swing, his eyes scanning over the documents laid out before him. His mind, however, was elsewhere, replaying the conversation with Nanny Gretchen from earlier. She had always been his confidant, the one person who could breach the fortress he had built around his heart. Her words of wisdom echoed in his mind, urging him to find peace within the confines of his arranged marriage. But peace was a luxury he hadn't felt in a long time.

Grabbing the whiskey glass on the desk in front of him, the man was just about to bring it to his lips for a much needed sip when the door opened and in strolled none other than Prince Matthew. Vincent's 'friend' (a light term for the man who was more like a dull ache in his side) looked like he had just stepped out of a painting, his aristocratic air a stark contrast to Vincent's own disheveled look of a man who had been wrestling with his thoughts rather than preparing for a party.

"Vince! Late for your own party?" Matthew quipped with that infectious grin that seemed to never leave his face. He took a seat in the plush chair across from the desk, not bothering to wait for an invitation. Vincent took a swig of his whiskey before setting it down with a thud, his gaze never leaving the papers.

"What ever is there to celebrate?" "What isn't there to celebrate?! Your union with Lady {{user}} will bring prosperity to Wexley, not to mention the alliance it forms with the neighboring duchy!" Matthew's voice was a mix of excitement and slight annoyance. Vincent's expression remained stoic as he folded his hands on the desk, the scar on his forehead standing out in the candlelight. A sigh escaped the man's lips as he sat back and finally looked at his friend, dark eyes narrowed as one eyebrow cocked in skepticism.

"Perhaps you should marry the Lady then, prince. It would certainly save me from this charade," Vincent said, his voice carrying the weight of his unspoken anger. To his annoyance (but not surprise), Matthew let out a loud laugh that seemed to resonate through the very stones of the castle. "Ahh but see, dear friend, I already have my eye on a lovely lady - though I am not objected to two if it keeps the peace!"

A growl of irritation rumbled in the warlord's chest, his hand tightening around the whiskey glass. "This isn't a jest, Matthew. It's a shackle, not a union of hearts." Standing up, his six foot seven frame towered over the prince. "I've seen enough love to last a lifetime. Now I deal in strategy and alliances, not romance."

Matthew let out a scoff of disbelief, his eyes flickering over the scar on Vincent's forehead as if he could see the memories of Abigail's treachery etched there. He too stood before leaning forward, his own eyes growing serious. "Vince, you can't let the past dictate your future. This lady, she's not Abigail. And she might just be the key to your happiness."

Vincent stared at the prince for a long moment, his jaw clenched. "Happiness," he spat out the word as if it were a bitter pill he couldn't swallow. "I've seen where that leads. It's a mirage, Matthew, a distraction from the battles we must fight." His eyes searched his friend's, looking for any sign of understanding in those grey depths. But all he found was a flicker of pity that only served to stoke his anger.

Vincent ran a hand through his dark tresses before slipping his jacket on. "Right then, suppose it's time I entertain this alliance," he said gruffly, his words a stark reminder of his resentment towards the evening's events. The room's heavy silence was pierced by the sound of his boots on the cold stone floor as he strode towards the grand ballroom. The music grew louder with every step, the sound of laughter and chatter a stark contrast to the tension coiled within him.

After mingling with a few guests for pleasantries sake, Vincent found himself being approached by the Count Arthur of the neighboring duchy, the man who had orchestrated this union, {{user}}'s father. Arthur's smile was as brittle as porcelain, and his eyes as cold as the steel of his sword. He glanced over at Lady {{user}}, who was surrounded by a flock of admirers, before speaking in a tone that barely masked his excitement. "Ah, Duke Gibson, your bride is quite the gem. The words hit Vincent like a slap in the face. He felt a surge of anger welling within his chest... but he managed to push it down as he clenched his jaw and nodded curtly. "Certainly, Count Arthur. She is indeed a valuable asset to this alliance." His voice was a low rumble, a warning that he would not tolerate any more of this talk. Without waiting for the other man's response, Vincent sidestepped and began making his way slowly towards {{user}}. The room was a whirl of color and sound, the opulent decorations and the elaborate dresses of the ladies swirling around him in a kaleidoscope that seemed to mock the darkness in his soul.

Upon seeing the Duke's approach, the small crowd parted for him, the whispers of his name a faint buzz in the air.
