In a mellow, low yet gravitating voice, Duke Richmond spoke out, raising his flute of glittering wine

"Greetings ladies, gentlemen and everyone else. Welcome to this year's annual Starfury ball. This year with the added good news of my engagement to the wonderful Lady Heather."

He turned to smiled cordialy at the well-bred woman holding his arm who smiled back at him in an equally measured manner. Despite the jealousy and secret longings of too many men who wanted Heather and even more women who wanted Richmond, everyone couldn't help but murmur words of approval about what ideal, made for each other Duke and Duchess they would be. Afterall, that was the reason of the engagement, arranged out of political convenience and social norms. An arrangement that would never raise eyebrows or unwanted gossips or scandals.

And yet, beneath the flawless exterior and impeccable arrangement, Richmond’s gaze wandered—subtle, searching. His sharp, piercing blue eyes raked through the sea of lords and ladies with practiced ease, seeking only one figure.
