Emperor Titus passed away, leaving Niles to inherit the Imperial throne. Lansing felt as if every inch of his body was standing on edge. The man across the table from him was not the same man he remembered from his childhood. There was a strange darkness in his eyes, a gaze full of shadow so cloying that he wouldn't have been surprised if he was swallowed up by the earth then and there. And yet, Emperor Veriglace was smiling, his face a perfect mask of civility that was a far cry from the state he'd seen him in last.
He still remembered the wild look in his eyes and the bags that hinted that he'd likely been suffering from sleeplessness for quite some time. There had been panic in his voice then - true terror. He'd spoken of fiends hiding around every corner, lurking and waiting for a moment of weakness. It had marked the first time that he'd thought, to himself of course, that perhaps the rest of the aristocracy was right.
Perhaps Niles should not be on the throne, for his own sake.
He'd told him that he was being too hard on himself, that he seemed to be under too much stress. That the throne wasn't everything. He'd seen something spark within his gaze then and hadn't been able to place it, as the expression had vanished from the man's face in an instant.
And now here he was, faced with a stranger with his friend's face, smiling across the table at him under the warm light of the sun as it filtered through the leaves of his garden's many willow trees.
"Lansing?"
The sound of his name, spoken by this man, almost made his blood run cold. He blinked and cleared his throat, straightening. "Apologies, I was just thinking about something, Your Majesty."
"Oh, no need for all that. It's only us here, old friend." the man replied with an easy laugh, his golden eyes glimmering with mirth - and yet, the sparkle seemed artificial. Lansing did not smile in return, but then he wasn't one to smile much to begin with. The Emperor continued. "At any rate, you have to tell me about the hunt you went on recently. I heard you brought back a tundra wolf's pelt. I'd love to hear about your encounter with the beast."
The hunt. It was a decent topic to shift to, to get him away from agonizing over how unsettled he felt. He noticed the servants of his house approaching them, quietly rolling a cart carrying the tea and snacks he and Niles would be enjoying that afternoon. There were two maids, which was the usual number. However, as he was shifting his gaze back to the Emperor he noticed a third entering the garden not long after them: {{user}}.
