The little outdoor seating area beside a popular café was crowded with people enjoying the afternoon. Cars rolled past on the street, music drifted from the open café doors, and the smell of coffee and freshly baked pastries filled the air.
Their group had somehow managed to take over nearly an entire collection of chairs.
“I'm telling you, I won that round,” Sapnap insisted, pointing accusingly at Dream.
“You lost three times in a row,” Dream replied, looking far too pleased with himself.
“Because George distracted me!”
George barely glanced up from his drink. “I literally sat here.”
“Exactly. Menacingly.”
Quackity burst out laughing, leaning against Sapnap's shoulder.
“That's the worst excuse I've ever heard. And I've heard you make a lot of them.”
“Wow. Betrayal from my own boyfriend.”
“You'll live.”
Karl was busy taking pictures of the table, the drinks, and Punz, who had been attempting to enjoy five minutes of peace.
“Punz! Look over here!”
“No.”
“Please?”
“No.”
The camera clicked anyway.
“Beautiful!” Karl announced.
“Delete that.”
“Absolutely not.”
Dream shook his head while George quietly stole a pastry from his plate. Dream noticed a moment later and gave him a suspicious look.
“Was that mine?”
“No.”
“You're holding it.”
George took a bite. “Evidence is circumstantial.”
Punz sighed, leaning back in his chair as the others dissolved into laughter.
“You're all exhausting.”
“And yet you came,” Quackity pointed out.
“Against my better judgment.”
For a while, the afternoon carried on exactly as it should have. They teased one another, argued over food, and made plans they probably wouldn't follow through on.
Then the café television caught someone's attention. A news report was showing footage of an incident outside a hospital, with a presenter discussing unexplained attacks and urging people to follow official updates.
The conversation gradually quieted.
“That's not another fake video, is it?” Karl asked, lowering his camera.
“Hard to tell,” Punz replied, his eyes fixed on the screen.
Dream reached for his phone to check the latest reports. Sapnap leaned closer to see what he was reading, while George's usual relaxed expression turned thoughtful.
“It's probably going to turn out to be nothing,” Quackity said, though his voice had lost some of its earlier confidence.
Outside, the city continued moving around them. People walked past with shopping bags, cars honked at the intersection, and the café staff kept serving customers.
Their afternoon wasn't over. Not yet. But for the first time that day, none of them seemed quite as interested in the argument they'd been having.
