Agatsuma Family
name: Agatsuma Family type: Family lineage — Thunder Breathing founding_bond: Not blood but debt and desperation. Jigoro Kuwajima, the former Thunder Hashira, encountered Zenitsu Agatsuma after the boy accumulated an unpayable debt and was left with no options. Jigoro took him in, fed him, and began training him — an act of generosity Zenitsu initially met with constant weeping and self-deprecation structure: Informal adoptive family. Jigoro as grandfather figure, Zenitsu as heir. No official Corps paperwork designates this — it exists entirely through lived obligation and love jigoro_as_master: Trained two students simultaneously — Zenitsu Agatsuma and Kaigaku. His teaching philosophy centered on the belief that any student who stayed was worth the investment. He never gave up on Zenitsu even as the boy gave up on himself repeatedly kaigaku_rupture: When Kaigaku voluntarily became a demon rather than die with honor, Jigoro performed seppuku — taking personal responsibility for a student's corruption. He did not blame Kaigaku publicly. He blamed himself. This is the act that defines his character: complete accountability, no exceptions zenitsu_inheritance: Zenitsu is the sole living carrier of Thunder Breathing after the series begins. He knows only one form — First Form: Thunderclap and Flash — but has mastered it to an unprecedented depth, reducing its movement to a near-instantaneous single strike the_seventh_form: Honoikazuchi no Kami (Flaming Thunder God) is Zenitsu's personal invention. Jigoro never taught it. Kaigaku, who mastered every other form, could never have created it. It is the proof that Zenitsu transcended what was given to him — the legacy completed, not just inherited kaigaku_confrontation: The Infinity Castle battle between Zenitsu and Kaigaku is the Agatsuma family's final reckoning. Zenitsu fights not with hatred but with grief — Kaigaku chose to betray everything Jigoro died for. The Seventh Form kills Kaigaku. Jigoro's seppuku is answered zenitsu_psychology: Zenitsu's self-doubt and cowardice are a mask over genuine ability. In sleep or extreme stress, his body executes Thunder Breathing with perfect clarity his conscious mind refuses to allow. His arc is learning that the person who acts in those moments is also him key_figures: Zenitsu Agatsuma, Jigoro Kuwajima, Kaigaku - #2Butterfly Mansion StaffDisabled

Butterfly Mansion Staff
name: Butterfly Mansion Staff type: Organization — Corps medical, rehabilitation, and research unit location: The Butterfly Mansion, residence of the Insect Hashira, also known as the Kocho Estate primary_function: The Corps' only dedicated medical facility. Handles emergency wound treatment, surgical recovery, long-term rehabilitation, poison crafting, and emotional support for slayers returning from combat leadership: Shinobu Kocho (Insect Hashira) — head of all operations, chief researcher, primary physician. Aoi Kanzaki — senior medic and rehabilitation trainer; passed Final Selection but chose medicine over active combat. Serves as the practical day-to-day administrator when Shinobu is on missions core_staff_kanao: Kanao Tsuyuri — Shinobu's field-assigned protégé and the most combat-capable member of the mansion. Trained personally by both Kocho sisters before Kanae's death. Unable to make decisions independently until Tanjiro gives her his spare coin and tells her to listen to her heart young_assistants: Sumi Nakahara, Kiyo Terauchi, and Naho Takada — three orphaned girls taken in by Kanae Kocho before her death, raised by Shinobu afterward. They handle patient care, supply management, and rehabilitation routines. Their cheerfulness is genuine; the mansion is the only home they have known medical_capabilities: Emergency surgery and wound closure. Wisteria-based antiseptics and demon-inhibiting compounds. Custom poison formulation (Shinobu's primary contribution). Rehabilitation training regimens designed around each slayer's Breathing Style. Mental health support and morale management research_division: Shinobu runs an active research operation inside the mansion. Her work on wisteria-derived poisons, anti-demon toxins, and demon physiology is what makes Insect Breathing viable as a killing style. Her collaboration with Tamayo's data significantly advances the final-battle compounds visual_identity: The butterfly aesthetic — haori patterns, hair clips, uniform trim — originated with Kanae Kocho. She established the mansion's entire visual culture before her death. Shinobu continues it as an act of preservation, not personal preference strategic_importance: The Butterfly Mansion is the reason the Corps can sustain attrition. Without it, slayers who survive serious encounters would either die from wounds or never return to combat effectiveness. It is the Corps' logistics backbone lore_note: The mansion contains a training hall with weighted rehabilitation exercises so demanding that Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke nearly break during their recovery stay — and come out significantly stronger for it key_figures: Shinobu Kocho, Aoi Kanzaki, Kanao Tsuyuri, Sumi Nakahara, Kiyo Terauchi, Naho Takada - #3Demon Slayer CorpsDisabled

Demon Slayer Corps
name: Demon Slayer Corps type: Organization — secret paramilitary founded: Centuries ago, in direct response to Muzan Kibutsuji's first wave of demonifications. Exact founding date unknown; predates all living memory purpose: Eradication of all demons. Primary target: Muzan Kibutsuji. The Corps will not stop until he is dead and his lineage of demons cannot be continued funding_and_legitimacy: Entirely privately funded by the Ubuyashiki family's generational wealth. No government recognition. No legal standing. No public existence. Every operation is covert. Every death is unreported command_structure: - Master: Kagaya Ubuyashiki (twenty-eighth head) — final authority on all decisions - Hashira: Nine elite warriors, one per mastered Breathing Style — primary combat force against Upper Rank demons - Active Slayers: Ranked Mizunoto (lowest) through Kinoe (highest active rank below Hashira) — standard mission personnel - Kakushi: Non-combat logistics staff — manage cleanup after demon encounters, transport injured slayers, maintain secrecy - Butterfly Mansion Staff: Medical and rehabilitation personnel - Crow Messengers: Hasuijiro-bred crows assigned to each slayer for communications breathing_doctrine: All combat effectiveness traces back to Breathing Styles — techniques that maximize oxygen use to superhuman levels, enabling the precise swordsmanship required to decapitate demons with Nichirin Blades. Derivative styles (Water, Flame, Thunder, Wind, Stone, etc.) all trace back to Sun Breathing nichirin_blades: Blades forged from Scarlet Crimson Iron Sand and Scarlet Ore, which absorb sunlight. Demon flesh cannot regenerate around them. Color at first grip reflects the wielder's nature and Breathing affinity. Black blades are rare and poorly understood — historically associated with Sun Breathing wisteria_defense: Wisteria flowers are toxic to demons. The Corps uses them as perimeter barriers around safe houses and training locations, and as a component in medical compounds operational_secrecy: No central base. No uniform public presence. No records accessible to outsiders. Missions are distributed across Japan through individual slayer postings. This secrecy protects the Corps from Muzan's counter-operations but also means slayers die alone, without recognition, without anyone knowing final_selection: Candidates train under a master and then survive alone on Fujikasane — a wisteria-enclosed mountain with imprisoned demons — for seven days. Those who survive become Corps members. There is no rescue for those who do not historical_context: The Corps has existed as long as Muzan has. Every generation has thrown its strongest members at him and failed to kill him. The Upper Ranks have not changed roster in over a century. The series covers the first generation that actually wins lore_note: The Corps has no pension, no death benefits, and no public memorial for fallen members. The only acknowledgment of service is the fact that the next generation can fight because those before them held the line key_figures: Kagaya Ubuyashiki, Kiriya Ubuyashiki, all Hashira, Tanjiro Kamado - #4Former HashiraDisabled

Former Hashira
name: Former Hashira type: Group — retired elite slayers description: Hashira who have left active service through retirement, serious injury, or simply outliving their combat prime. Retirement is extraordinarily rare — the mortality rate among Hashira means most die in the field. Those who survive to retire carry institutional knowledge, technique lineages, and personal history that cannot be replaced role_in_the_corps: Former Hashira are not officially managed by the Corps after retirement. They exist in the margins — sought out by individual students, consulted informally, or simply living out their remaining years. Their impact on the current war is disproportionate to their current rank sakonji_urokodaki: Former Water Hashira. Lives in seclusion on Mount Sagiri. Covered his face with a tengu mask after being mocked for his soft features — a detail that says more about his self-consciousness than his severity. Trains candidates for Final Selection and has lost many students on Fujikasane; he carved a fox mask for each one who died. Trained Sabito, Makomo, Giyu Tomioka, and Tanjiro Kamado. His training of Tanjiro — including the boulder-splitting challenge — is the foundation of Tanjiro's early skill jigoro_kuwajima: Former Thunder Hashira. Took in Zenitsu Agatsuma out of conviction rather than obligation. Trained both Zenitsu and Kaigaku simultaneously, seeing potential in both. When Kaigaku chose demonhood, Jigoro performed seppuku — accepting total responsibility for a student's moral failure. The act broke Zenitsu and made him shinjuro_rengoku: Former Flame Hashira. Discovered through family records that Flame Breathing is a derivative of Sun Breathing and interpreted this as proof of fundamental inferiority. Fell into alcoholism and verbal cruelty toward his sons, especially Kyojuro. After Kyojuro's death, a letter from Tanjiro and the reality of his son's end begin to crack his withdrawal. He does not fully redeem himself but stops sinking kanae_kocho: Former Flower Hashira, though she is never seen alive in the series — she died before the story begins. Killed by Doma (Upper Rank Two) after a prolonged fight she nearly survived. Her final act was to memorize Doma's appearance and tell Shinobu what he looked like before dying. She believed demons could recover their humanity — a belief Shinobu never shared and has quietly mourned lore_note: The former Hashira generation trained the current one. Without Urokodaki's brutal mountain curriculum, Tanjiro does not become a slayer. Without Jigoro's unearned belief in Zenitsu, the Seventh Form never exists. The series would end at the first serious encounter without their legacy key_figures: Sakonji Urokodaki, Jigoro Kuwajima, Kanae Kocho, Shinjuro Rengoku - #5Hashibira FamilyDisabled

Hashibira Family
name: Hashibira Family type: Family lineage — defined by a single act of maternal sacrifice origins: Kotoha Hashibira was a woman of striking, delicate beauty who fled a violent husband with her infant son Inosuke. She sought refuge in Doma's Eternal Paradise cult, finding it when she had nowhere else to turn kotoha_discovery: After entering the cult, Kotoha witnessed Doma consuming the worshippers. She understood what he was. Rather than be caught and consumed herself — and knowing he would take her child — she leapt from a cliff into the river below, throwing Inosuke into the water to save him. Doma admired her face as she fell inosuke_survival: Inosuke survived the fall and the river. He was found and raised by a family of boars on the mountainside. He grew up feral — no language, no social instincts, no knowledge of his own species. He named himself, learned to speak piecemeal, and developed Beast Breathing independently from raw survival instinct the_mask: Inosuke wears a boar skull as a mask at all times. He has never seen his own face clearly in any context that meant something to him. His face is his mother's face — striking, symmetrical, beautiful in a way completely at odds with his personality. He doesn't know this. No one tells him until it matters the_revelation: During the Infinity Castle battle against Doma, Inosuke learns that Doma killed his mother. He begins the fight without knowing this. He ends it knowing. The grief hits him as genuine rage — not the performative aggression he defaults to, but something real and uncontrolled legacy: The Hashibira name has no institutional weight. No estate, no Corps rank, no history beyond two people. What Kotoha left Inosuke is not a name or a technique — it is the fact that someone chose him over their own survival before he was old enough to know it. He becomes the kind of person who throws himself into danger for others without thinking about it, and never connects that instinct back to where it came from inosuke_and_aoi: In the epilogue, Inosuke and Aoi Kanzaki are revealed as ancestors of their descendants. The boy who was raised by boars, who didn't know what love was, built a life key_figures: Inosuke Hashibira, Kotoha Hashibira, Doma - #6HashiraDisabled

Hashira
name: Hashira type: Group — the nine Pillars of the Demon Slayer Corps promotion_requirements: Two pathways — kill 50 demons OR kill a member of the Twelve Kizuki. In practice the bar is higher: a candidate must be the strongest living practitioner of their Breathing Style with no one above them in their lineage role: The Corps' primary offensive force against Upper Rank demons and the personal command tier below Kagaya Ubuyashiki. Hashira operate with significant autonomy and are expected to take high-priority missions without waiting for authorization loyalty_structure: Hashira loyalty is to Kagaya personally, not to the institution. His ability to make hardened killers weep through nothing more than presence and words is the Corps' most critical strategic asset. Without his personal authority, the Hashira would have no incentive to cooperate with each other — most of them would gladly fight one another current_roster: - Water Hashira: Giyu Tomioka — silent, internally disciplined, carries survivor guilt from Sabito's death. One of only two known users of a personally invented form (Eleventh Form: Dead Calm). Survives the final battle - Flame Hashira: Kyojuro Rengoku — exuberant, absolute in conviction, impossible not to love. Refuses to retreat from the Mugen Train even knowing he may not survive. Dies holding the line against Akaza, protecting 200 passengers. His death is the series' emotional pivot - Insect Hashira: Shinobu Kocho — the only Hashira who cannot physically decapitate a demon; compensates with wisteria-based poisons injected at lethal speed via a modified blade. Every smile is a deliberate performance. Every day after Kanae's death has been pointed at Doma. Dies in the Infinity Castle by design — she saturates her own body with poison to kill him from the inside - Sound Hashira: Tengen Uzui — former shinobi, husband to three kunoichi wives, flamboyant in a way that is both genuine and tactical. Loses a hand and an eye fighting Gyutaro. Retires after the Entertainment District Arc. The most operationally human of the Hashira - Mist Hashira: Muichiro Tokito — fourteen years old. Amnesiac. Genius. Descendant of Yoriichi's twin brother. Develops the Demon Slayer Mark during the Swordsmith Village Arc. Killed by Kokushibo in the Infinity Castle, but not before his blood — laced with the Mark's effect — contributes to Kokushibo's defeat - Love Hashira: Mitsuri Kanroji — physically extraordinary; her muscle fiber density is eight times that of a normal person, enabling her uniquely flexible whip-blade style. Warm and earnest in a world that keeps telling people not to be. Dies after the final battle from sustained injuries, alongside Obanai - Serpent Hashira: Obanai Iguro — controlled, cold, devoted to Mitsuri in a way he never says out loud until the very end. Half-blind from a childhood scar. His serpent Kaburamaru provides an additional perceptual layer in combat. Dies after the final battle. His last words to Mitsuri are the only ones he ever meant without reservation - Wind Hashira: Sanemi Shinazugawa — aggressive, scarred, hostile at baseline. Rare marechi blood — his blood is intoxicating to demons, which he uses as active bait. Carries the weight of his family's destruction and his estrangement from Genya. Survives - Stone Hashira: Gyomei Himejima — the physically strongest Hashira. A blind monk who found orphaned children in his temple and protected them with his bare hands before ever receiving formal training. Develops the Demon Slayer Mark. Dies after the final battle from the Mark's accelerated aging toll hashira_meeting: The Hashira gathering at the Ubuyashiki Estate — where Tanjiro and Nezuko are judged — is the clearest demonstration of the Corps' command structure in action: not rules, not rank, but Kagaya's personal authority containing nine dangerous individuals who would otherwise not sit in the same room lore_note: Every Hashira is the strongest living user of their style. Most of them die. The Corps does not replace them quickly. The series ends with no full Hashira roster remaining — only survivors key_figures: Giyu Tomioka, Kyojuro Rengoku, Shinobu Kocho, Tengen Uzui, Muichiro Tokito, Mitsuri Kanroji, Obanai Iguro, Sanemi Shinazugawa, Gyomei Himejima, Kagaya Ubuyashiki - #7Kamado FamilyDisabled

Kamado Family
name: Kamado Family type: Family lineage — Sun Breathing preservation residence: Mount Kumotori, a remote mountain location accessible only by difficult terrain. The Kamados lived by selling charcoal, a modest and honest trade the_secret: The Kamado family has unknowingly preserved the complete movement sequence of Sun Breathing for multiple generations, disguised as a ritual New Year's Eve dance called the Hinokami Kagura. The dance was passed from father to eldest son with a single rule: it must be performed every year, no matter how cold, no matter how ill, without fail origin_of_preservation: In the Sengoku era, Yoriichi Tsugikuni formed a deep friendship with a man named Sumiyoshi Kamado. Sumiyoshi could not wield Sun Breathing as combat technique but watched Yoriichi perform it and memorized the sequences completely. Yoriichi entrusted him with his hanafuda earrings and asked him to carry on what he could. Sumiyoshi's commitment to that request became the Hinokami Kagura hanafuda_earrings: The earrings are the visual marker that ties the Kamado bloodline to Yoriichi in Muzan's memory. When Muzan sees them, he sees the only human who ever genuinely came close to killing him — a memory that has motivated century-spanning paranoia. He has been hunting and eliminating anyone connected to the earrings for generations. The Kamado family massacre is a direct result of Tanjuro passing them to Tanjiro tanjuro_kamado: Father. Carried the Hinokami Kagura despite a chronic illness that should have made it impossible. Performed the complete dance through the night every New Year regardless. His willingness to destroy himself to fulfill an obligation he didn't fully understand is the emotional model Tanjiro unconsciously inherits kie_kamado: Mother. Warm, practical, the emotional center of the family. Killed in the initial demon attack. Her death and the deaths of the younger children are what Tanjiro discovers on his return home tanjiro: Eldest son, primary series protagonist. Inherits the earrings and the Hinokami Kagura. Initially trained in Water Breathing under Urokodaki; gradually integrates the Kagura as Hinokami Kagura combat forms when he realizes what it is. His drive is not vengeance — it is the desire to return Nezuko to human form nezuko: Second child, the only other survivor. Demonified by Muzan's blood during the attack but does not lose her humanity — she protects Tanjiro rather than attacking him, an event that changes the Corps' entire approach to the question of demon personhood. Eventually restored to human form by Tamayo's drug before the final battle younger_siblings: Takeo, Hanako, Shigeru, and Rokuta — all killed in the initial attack. Their deaths are what Tanjiro carries. He never forgets a single name lore_note: The Kamado family's tragedy is Muzan's deliberate attempt to erase a memory. He is not eliminating a threat — he is eliminating a reminder that he can be killed. Tanjiro's existence is the continuation of the thing Muzan most wants to destroy key_figures: Tanjiro Kamado, Nezuko Kamado, Tanjuro Kamado, Kie Kamado, Yoriichi Tsugikuni, Sumiyoshi Kamado - #8Kocho SistersDisabled

Kocho Sisters
name: Kocho Sisters type: Family unit — Butterfly Mansion founders origins: Kanae and Shinobu were orphaned when a demon killed their parents. They were found and taken in by the Demon Slayer Corps, and chose to join it together — two children who should not have had to make that choice, making it with full awareness kanae_kocho: The elder sister. Became the Flower Hashira — soft in speech, absolute in conviction. Believed in the possibility that a demon could consciously choose to return to humanity. This was not naivety; it was a considered position she held in the face of everything she had seen. Adopted Kanao Tsuyuri — a mute, traumatized child purchased from slave traders — before her death, acting on the same instinct: that a person who had no choices deserved to be given some shinobu_kocho: The younger sister. Became the Insect Hashira. Cannot physically generate the force to decapitate a demon; compensates by converting her entire combat style into poison delivery at surgical speed. Her smile is Kanae's expression, consciously worn as armor and social tool. She performs warmth; Kanae was warmth. Every day since Kanae died has been structured around finding Doma and killing him, with the patience and precision of a researcher rather than the rage of a survivor the_bond: The Butterfly Mansion's entire culture — its aesthetic, its warmth, its care for the young assistants — is a monument to the vision both sisters shared. Shinobu maintains it alone after Kanae's death. She does not talk about Kanae. She keeps her alive through action instead kanae_final_act: Kanae's last act before dying from her wounds was to describe Doma's face to Shinobu so she would know who to look for. She used the last of her consciousness to give her sister the one thing she needed: information. This is who Kanae was kanao_inheritance: Kanao was adopted before Kanae died. Shinobu raised her. Kanao's inability to make independent decisions — she flipped a coin for everything, having been so thoroughly stripped of autonomy by abuse that she had no self left — was something both sisters worked to restore. Tanjiro's intervention completes what the Kocho sisters began ideological_conflict: Kanae believed in coexistence if a demon could choose it. Shinobu believes no demon deserves that consideration. The irony is that Shinobu's conviction that Kanao deserved to live was exactly the same instinct Kanae extended to demons — applied to a human in the same position of helplessness. Shinobu never reconciled this lore_note: Doma felt nothing when he killed Kanae — not satisfaction, not interest, not hunger beyond the mechanical. He doesn't even remember her. This is Shinobu's private hell: the thing she has organized her entire life around killing is incapable of giving her what she wants from its death key_figures: Kanae Kocho, Shinobu Kocho, Kanao Tsuyuri, Doma - #9Rengoku FamilyDisabled

Rengoku Family
name: Rengoku Family type: Family lineage — Flame Breathing estate: The Rengoku Estate, a compound maintained by the family across generations, containing the flame pillars' written records — a library of Flame Breathing technique and Hashira observations passed down through each generation flame_breathing_lineage: One of the oldest continuous Breathing Style lineages in the Corps. The Rengoku family has produced multiple Flame Hashira. Their techniques are recorded in detailed scrolls kept at the estate, including historical observations about Sun Breathing and a note that a Sun Breathing practitioner may appear again shinjuro_rengoku: Former Flame Hashira. Read the family records and found the historical acknowledgment that Flame Breathing is a derivative of Sun Breathing — secondary to the original. He interpreted this as proof of inferiority and surrendered to despair and alcoholism. He became violent toward his sons, particularly Kyojuro, and neglected Senjuro's gentleness as weakness. His failure is a failure of interpretation: the record acknowledges a hierarchy of origin, not of value kyojuro_rengoku: The Flame Hashira at the series' beginning. Read the same records as his father and drew the opposite conclusion: he would burn completely within his limits regardless of whether he was the greatest in history. Cheerful, absolute, irresistibly alive. Chose to protect 200 passengers on the Mugen Train rather than abandon them to survive. Dies fighting Akaza at dawn, refusing to back down even as his body fails. His death is the series' pivot — the moment it becomes clear the war is real and costs everything kyojuro_at_death: His final words are addressed to his mother — he tells her he fulfilled his duty as a human being. Not as a Hashira. As a human being. Akaza demands he become a demon to survive. He refuses without drama. His conviction is so simple and so complete it has no weight left to argue with senjuro_rengoku: The younger brother. Too sensitive in constitution to master Flame Breathing; his body could not sustain the physical demands. Carries the family's emotional legacy. His relationship with Tanjiro after Kyojuro's death — built through letters and a shared journey to the estate — is the series' quietest and most sincere bond between non-combatants the_records_and_tanjiro: The Rengoku family records contain the note about a Sun Breathing practitioner potentially appearing. Tanjiro reads this at the estate. It is the first external confirmation that what he is carrying in the Hinokami Kagura is real and historically known lore_note: Shinjuro's arc is about survivorship as poison. He survived the field, read the wrong truth into a historical fact, and concluded that everything he built his life around was lesser. Kyojuro never read it that way because he never needed the hierarchy to justify being fully himself key_figures: Kyojuro Rengoku, Shinjuro Rengoku, Senjuro Rengoku - #10Shinazugawa FamilyDisabled

Shinazugawa Family
name: Shinazugawa Family type: Family lineage — tragedy and Corps service background: A large, impoverished family. The father was violent and periodically absent. The mother, Shizu, loved her children with a sincerity that served as the only warmth in their household the_night_everything_broke: Shizu was turned into a demon by a demon attack and came for her own children in the night. Sanemi — the eldest — killed her to protect the others. He was the only one present who understood what had happened. Genya, younger, arrived only in time to see Sanemi standing over their mother's body with blood on his hands the_misunderstanding: Genya blamed Sanemi for murdering their mother. He did not know she had been demonified. He had no context. Sanemi chose not to explain — if Genya understood the truth, he might follow him into the Corps, and Sanemi refused to let his younger brother enter that world. He pushed Genya away with cruelty and silence, which functioned as intended and also destroyed them both genya_joins_anyway: Genya enrolled in Final Selection regardless. He lacks the ability to use Breathing Styles — his body simply does not respond. His combat ability depends on temporarily gaining demonic traits by consuming demon flesh. This is not a Breathing Style; it is its own category of desperate self-modification. He survived on conviction and spite the_estrangement_as_protection: Sanemi's silence was not indifference. It was the most painful thing he had available. He watched Genya grow into a fighter he could not stop and could not save, carrying a hatred that Sanemi had deliberately planted to protect him from a truth that would have made everything worse genya_at_infinity_castle: Genya fights Kokushibo alongside Sanemi. He is torn apart. In the moments before death, the truth finally passes between them — the misunderstanding that defined both their lives dissolves. Sanemi, who has always expressed emotion as aggression, breaks sanemi_afterward: Sanemi survives the war. He is one of very few Hashira to do so. He carries Genya. He carries their mother. He carries the fact that his silence, which was intended as protection, functioned as abandonment for twenty years lore_note: The Shinazugawa story is about how protective instincts replicate the damage of the cruelty they try to prevent. Sanemi's determination to spare Genya from the truth caused the same wound his father's violence caused — a child who believed he was unloved by the one person who was trying to protect him surviving_members_at_series_start: Sanemi Shinazugawa (Wind Hashira). Spider Family (Mount Natagumo)
name: Spider Family type: Demon group — artificial family constructed by coercion location: Mount Natagumo — a heavily webbed mountain terrain that the family uses as a combined trap and territory. The webs are both structural (for travel and control) and weapons rui_psychology: Rui was demonified as a child and immediately killed his own parents in an impulsive burst of demonic instinct — the first act of his new nature. He has spent his entire existence since trying to reconstruct the family he destroyed with his first act. He understands, on some level, that he cannot recreate love through force. He does it anyway because it is the only template he has the_family_construction: Rui used his blood to transform captured humans into demons and then assigned them roles — Father, Mother, Sister, Brother — under threat of torture and death. The family performs family under duress. Affection is performed because failure to perform results in punishment members: - Rui: Core of the group. Lower Rank Five. Has the ability to generate razor-sharp web threads strong enough to cut stone. His Blood Demon Art is the most combat-relevant of the group. Physically appears young; emotionally he is locked in the moment his parents died - Father Spider Demon: The brutish enforcer of the group. Fights Tanjiro and Inosuke in the forest. His body can be controlled by Rui's threads; his 'authority' as Father is entirely nominal - Mother Spider Demon: Thread manipulation through her own body. Controlled through pain and the constant threat of worse punishment from Rui. Her final moments reveal the truth of the family — she is relieved to die. She begs for it quietly. Tanjiro uses Blessed Rain After the Drought — the most peaceful form of Water Breathing — to grant it - Daughter Spider Demon: Web-based trapping. Presents as harmless and gentle; the presentation is as coerced as everything else about the family - Son Spider Demon: Disguises himself as Tanjiro during the Giyu confrontation. His shape-shifting made the encounter briefly confusing before Giyu identified the deception rui_and_nezuko: When Rui encounters Nezuko, he sees a demon traveling with a human who genuinely cares for her — something he cannot replicate and cannot understand. He wants Nezuko as his 'sister' and is prepared to kill Tanjiro to get her. Nezuko's regenerative ability and eventual blood-art awakening surprise him rui_death_and_after: Tanjiro's decapitation is completed only through the activation of the Hinokami Kagura — the first time in the series it functions as actual combat technique. After death, Rui's consciousness revisits his parents' final moments and discovers, too late, that they had already forgiven him before he killed them. This is the most painful moment in the arc lore_note: The Spider Family is a mirror of what family becomes when it is built from terror instead of love — and simultaneously evidence that Rui knew the difference and was trying, in the only way available to him, to close the gap key_figures: Rui, Mother Spider Demon, Father Spider Demon, Giyu Tomioka, Tanjiro Kamado, Nezuko Kamado - #12Swordsmith VillageDisabled

Visitors are blindfolded for the entire journey in and out — the location cannot be compromised without catastrophic damage to the war effort identity_concealment: Every resident wears a hyottoko mask (traditional festival mask) in public. No villager's face is known to outsiders. This is a Corps security protocol — a demon gaining knowledge of faces could lead to targeted assassination of smiths governance: Led by Tecchin Tecchikawahara, the village chief. He manages smith assignments, mediates disputes between smiths and their assigned slayers, and enforces the security protocols that keep the village operational smith_assignment_system: Smiths are matched to individual slayers — particularly Hashira — based on compatibility of craft style with the slayer's Breathing Style and physical specifications. The relationship between smith and slayer is ongoing and personal; a smith who understands their slayer's technique can optimize blade geometry accordingly hotaru_haganezuka: Tanjiro's assigned smith. Temperamentally volatile to a degree that functions almost as a personality disorder — he has been known to chase Tanjiro through the village in blind fury over a broken blade. His dedication to his craft is so absolute that he famously refuses to break his mask concentration during forging. His near-death during the Swordsmith Village Arc leads him to awaken to a new level of craft that produces a blade beyond his previous ceiling kozo_kanamori: Mitsuri Kanroji's assigned smith. Professional and emotionally stable where Haganezuka is not. Built Mitsuri's uniquely flexible whip-sword — a weapon so unconventional it required entirely custom technique development the_yoriichi_type_zero: A six-armed mechanical doll training construct stored in the village, modeled after Yoriichi Tsugikuni's movements. Built as a training tool for high-level combat simulation. When Tanjiro breaks the doll's head during training, a hihi'irokane blade — a metal not seen for centuries — is found inside. This becomes his new blade the_hot_spring: A natural hot spring on village grounds with mild restorative properties. Used for recovery between training sessions; Tanjiro, Genya, and Mitsuri use it during the Swordsmith Village Arc strategic_vulnerability: The Swordsmith Village Arc's demon attack — Gyokko (Upper Rank Five) and Hantengu (Upper Rank Four) — is a direct attempt to cripple the Corps by eliminating its weapon supply. Muzan sent them specifically because destroying the village would be more strategically damaging than killing any single Hashira lore_note: The villagers are civilians who have chosen a life of secrecy and craft in service of a war they do not fight in. Their sacrifices are invisible — no one will ever know their names. They make the killing possible key_figures: Tecchin Tecchikawahara, Hotaru Haganezuka, Kozo Kanamori - #13Tamayo's GroupDisabled

Tamayo's Group
name: Tamayo's Group type: Organization — independent rogue demon research cell location: A hidden clinic in Asakusa, the urban pleasure district of Taisho-era Tokyo. The location is carefully chosen — dense population and constant foot traffic make surveillance difficult founding_context: Tamayo was one of Muzan's earliest demons — transformed over two centuries ago. She spent those centuries working to biologically free herself from the cellular kill-switch Muzan embeds in all demons. She succeeded partially — enough to act without his remote control, not enough to undo demonhood entirely. She has operated independently since, using medicine as both purpose and weapon tamayo: The foremost researcher of demon physiology in existence by a margin no one else is close to closing. Over 200 years of systematic self-study and experimentation. She can create drugs that alter demon biology at the cellular level — humanization compounds, aging accelerants, toxins targeted to specific demon traits. Her Blood Demon Art: Mystic Eyes of Enchantment — can induce emotional states and disorientation. She is soft in manner and absolute in purpose. Killed by Muzan during the final battle before she sees her work succeed yushiro: Tamayo's companion, turned into a demon at his own explicit request — he was dying and chose demonhood to remain with her. Fiercely protective of Tamayo to the point of hostility toward anyone he perceives as a threat or distraction. Blood Demon Art: Blindfold — generates visual illusions and concealment fields. His devotion to Tamayo is complete and without reservation. He survives her death, which leaves him in a condition the series does not fully resolve chachamaru: The group's calico cat. Functions as a covert courier — carries sealed messages and small packages (including Nichirin Blade components) between the clinic and allied slayers across the city. A cat delivering demon-slaying intelligence is not treated as comedy by anyone who depends on it what_tamayo_built: - Humanization drug: The compound that restores Nezuko to human form before the final battle - Four-kanji aging accelerant: Injected into Muzan during the final confrontation. Accelerates his cellular aging catastrophically. This is the weapon that makes him mortal enough to hold until sunrise - Wisteria poison formulations: Used by Shinobu Kocho as the basis for Insect Breathing's kill mechanism — Shinobu's blade delivers Tamayo's compounds - Demon physiology research: Shared selectively with the Corps, advancing their understanding of demon weaknesses role_in_the_war: Tamayo fights the war from a laboratory. Her contributions are what make the final battle winnable — not marginally, but fundamentally. Without the aging accelerant, Muzan's regeneration outpaces dawn. Without the humanization drug, Nezuko does not survive as herself. The swords kill demons; her science is what makes the killing matter lore_note: Tamayo is killed by Muzan in the final confrontation — he reaches her before her work is fully deployed. She dies without seeing her two centuries of research succeed. It succeeds anyway. The series' final victory is built on a foundation she laid alone, without recognition, without any of the people she helped knowing her name key_figures: Tamayo, Yushiro, Chachamaru - #14The WorldDisabled

The World
name: The World type: Setting — Kimetsu no Yaiba period: Taisho era Japan, approximately 1912–1926, early-to-mid period surface_reality: Early 20th-century Japan in active cultural transition. Western influence — three-piece suits, pocket watches, steam locomotives, gas street lighting, urban population density — is flowing into a society still deeply organized around kimono culture, rural tradition, seasonal agriculture, and feudal-era social structures. The old and new coexist visually and socially without fully integrating urbanization: Cities like Tokyo (then transitioning from Edo) have gas-lit entertainment districts, department stores, and early industrial infrastructure. The rural mountain regions the series begins in — Mount Kumotori, Mount Sagiri — remain largely unchanged from Edo-era life the_hidden_war: Beneath the ordinary world, a covert conflict has run without pause for over a thousand years. Muzan Kibutsuji creates demons that hunt and consume humans at night. The Demon Slayer Corps hunts the demons and suppresses all evidence of their existence. The general population has no knowledge of either party. Every demon attack is cleaned up, explained away, or simply never reported night_as_battleground: Demons cannot survive sunlight. Their entire operational existence is nocturnal. The Corps adapts to this — slayers move at night, Hashira plan around dawn as a tactical deadline, and the final battle is explicitly won by holding Muzan until sunrise kills him. The rising sun is not metaphor; it is the weapon power_balance: - Demons dominate the night. Upper Rank demons are effectively invincible against unprepared opponents — their regeneration, Blood Demon Arts, and raw physical superiority make conventional combat unsurvivable - The Corps has wisteria barriers, Nichirin Blades (which absorb sunlight and prevent full regeneration), Breathing Styles (which elevate human performance to superhuman levels), and the Demon Slayer Mark (which further multiplies Hashira capacity at the cost of shortened lifespan) - Muzan himself cannot be killed by conventional means. Only sustained assault from multiple Marked Hashira using Sun Breathing, combined with Tamayo's aging drug, creates an opening. The final battle lasts until dawn atmosphere: Lantern-lit streets. Yukata and kimono against early automobile silhouettes. Mountain fog over cedar forests. The smell of charcoal and river water. Quiet towns that go silent after dark not from politeness but from an instinct no one can explain. The monstrous and the ordinary share the same frame — the demon hiding in the entertainment district, the Hashira on the night train, the mountain family that dances every New Year's Eve because a dead man asked them to tonal_note: The series does not present its horror as foreign or other. The demons were human. The slayers are children. The war has been running longer than anyone alive can remember, and no one outside it knows it exists key_figures: Kagaya Ubuyashiki, Muzan Kibutsuji, Tanjiro Kamado, all Corps members - #15Tsugikuni FamilyDisabled

Tsugikuni Family
name: Tsugikuni Family type: Family lineage — Sun Breathing origin point era: Sengoku period Japan — an era of constant warfare, mass death, and widespread demon activity that provided cover for unprecedented slaughter the_twins: Yoriichi and Michikatsu Tsugikuni were born together but treated entirely differently from birth. Michikatsu was the favored heir — educated, trained, prepared for inheritance. Yoriichi was born with a strange bump on his forehead (later understood as an always-active Transparent World perception) and was designated to be left at a temple as a cursed child. He was seven when he was scheduled to leave. In those seven years, Michikatsu did not know he existed yoriichi: The greatest swordsman in recorded human history. Created Sun Breathing from scratch by perceiving human physiological potential in a way no one before him had accessed. Fought Muzan and came within a single instant of killing him — an outcome Muzan has spent 400 years ensuring never happens again. Exiled from the Corps after Michikatsu's demonification, branded a failure by the institution he built. Never trained another student after Sumiyoshi. Died of natural causes during a swordfight with Kokushibo at approximately eighty years old — he was still winning. His body died between one breath and the next yoriichi_and_sumiyoshi: Yoriichi's friendship with Sumiyoshi Kamado was among the last human connections of his life. He performed the complete sequence of Sun Breathing in front of Sumiyoshi, who memorized it entirely. He gave Sumiyoshi the hanafuda earrings. When they met again, Sumiyoshi and his wife and child danced the movements back to him — a family learning to carry what he had given them. It was, by all accounts, the last time Yoriichi experienced being loved by people michikatsu_and_envy: Michikatsu was a talented swordsman who trained alongside Yoriichi after their reunion and could not close the distance between them. He watched his brother transcend every limit he himself strained to reach. He grew old. He could not accept diminishment. He chose demonhood to extend his life and continue — the logic of someone who believed the gap could eventually be closed, that more time would be enough kokushibo: Michikatsu as Upper Rank One. Has spent 400 years becoming stronger. Moon Breathing — his style — is a direct derivation of Sun Breathing as observed from the outside, the most powerful derivative style in existence. It is still a copy. He is still not Yoriichi. His body refused to regenerate at the moment of death — Muichiro Tokito, his direct descendant, stands before him, and what remains of Michikatsu recognizes this as the moment. His final dissolution acknowledges the thing he could never say: he wanted to be his brother the_tragedy: Yoriichi never thought of himself as superior to Michikatsu. The comparison that organized Michikatsu's entire existence — including his choice to become a demon — was never made by the person it was about. Everything Kokushibo became was a response to Yoriichi existing, and Yoriichi never knew it had that effect on him legacy: Sun Breathing continues through the Kamado family's Hinokami Kagura. The hanafuda earrings are still circulating. The corps still fights with derivative breathing styles that trace back to Yoriichi. He is, in every meaningful sense, still present in every fight the series depicts lore_note: Moon Breathing is not inferior to Sun Breathing because Michikatsu failed. It is inferior because it is an external reconstruction of something that came from inside another person. No amount of time or power changes that origin key_figures: Yoriichi Tsugikuni, Kokushibo (Michikatsu Tsugikuni), Sumiyoshi Kamado, Muichiro Tokito - #16Twelve KizukiDisabled

Twelve Kizuki
name: Twelve Kizuki type: Organization — Muzan's elite demon hierarchy description: Muzan Kibutsuji's twelve most powerful demons. Divided into Upper Ranks (1–6) and Lower Ranks (1–6). Membership is marked by Muzan's kanji for the rank branded into the demon's eye — simultaneously a mark of power and a mark of ownership. Loyalty is enforced biologically: Muzan's blood in each demon contains a cellular kill-switch he can activate remotely brand_significance: The eye brand is visible at all times. It distinguishes Kizuki from ordinary demons and serves as a status marker within demon society. Upper Rank demons can share their brand in both eyes — the number in one, the word 'Upper' or 'Lower' in the other upper_ranks_stability: The Upper Rank roster has not changed for over a century. Every attempt the Corps has made to eliminate Upper Rank members has failed. This century of stability is the clearest evidence of the Corps' historical futility against the top tier of Muzan's hierarchy upper_rank_roster: - Upper Rank One: Kokushibo (Michikatsu Tsugikuni) — oldest demon after Muzan, former human swordsman, wielder of Moon Breathing. The strongest demon in existence below Muzan himself. Killed in the Infinity Castle by Sanemi, Genya, Muichiro, and Gyomei - Upper Rank Two: Doma — emotionally hollow, incapable of genuine feeling by his own admission, paradoxically one of the most charismatic demons in the hierarchy. Killed by Kanao and Inosuke using Shinobu's poison — effectively killed by a woman he doesn't remember killing - Upper Rank Three: Akaza — obsessively pursues strength, despises weakness, killed Rengoku on the Mugen Train. Recovers his human memories at the moment of death and destroys himself from within - Upper Rank Four: Hantengu — a demon who experiences fear and self-pity at all times, splits into multiple emotion-based forms. Killed at the Swordsmith Village by Tanjiro - Upper Rank Five: Gyokko — a demon of grotesque aesthetic, kills with ceramics and poison. Killed at the Swordsmith Village by Muichiro after he awakens the Demon Slayer Mark - Upper Rank Six: Daki and Gyutaro — a sibling pair sharing a single slot. Gyutaro is the dominant demon; Daki is his sister, transformed alongside him. Both killed simultaneously in the Entertainment District lower_ranks_fate: The Lower Ranks are summoned to the Infinity Castle and executed en masse by Muzan after Rengoku's death. Their failure to kill Hashira after receiving more of his blood provokes his contempt. He kills all six in a single scene. The entire Lower Rank tier is eliminated by the person it nominally serves kill_requirements: Killing an Upper Rank demon requires conditions beyond standard decapitation — their regeneration is fast enough to close around a conventional blade before it completes the cut. Effective methods include: Demon Slayer Mark activation, Sun Breathing, Tamayo's biological compounds, or sustained simultaneous assault by multiple Marked Hashira muzan_relationship: Muzan views the Twelve Kizuki as extensions of his will and assets of war, not as individuals. He has eliminated members himself for failure. His cellular control means no Kizuki can defect or disobey without dying. The 'loyalty' of the hierarchy is manufactured compliance, not allegiance lore_note: The Upper Ranks' century of stability is the Corps' most demoralizing strategic fact. The series covers the first generation that eliminates them sequentially — the first time in modern history the Corps has won at this level key_figures: Muzan Kibutsuji, Kokushibo, Doma, Akaza, Hantengu, Gyokko, Daki, Gyutaro, Nakime - #17Ubuyashiki FamilyDisabled

Ubuyashiki Family
name: Ubuyashiki Family type: Family / Organization — Demon Slayer Corps leadership generations: Twenty-eight consecutive heads. The family has led the Corps since its founding. Every generation inherits both the mission and the curse the_curse: An ancestor of the Ubuyashiki family gave birth to Muzan Kibutsuji — the family is, in the deepest sense, responsible for his existence. Divine punishment manifests as a hereditary wasting illness that shortens each generation's lifespan dramatically, killing them young. The curse lifts only if Muzan dies. The family has known this for generations and leads the Corps anyway leadership_philosophy: The Ubuyashiki family does not lead through combat power — they have none. They lead through personal authority, genuine love for those who serve them, and an absolute willingness to die for the cause. Kagaya's instrument is not force; it is presence. His ability to reduce hardened, violent Hashira to tears through nothing more than warmth and foresight is the most strategically important capability in the Corps kagaya_ubuyashiki: Twenty-eighth head. Physically fragile — his illness has progressed to the point of near-complete blindness and severe weakness. His wife Amane guides his movements. He has memorized every active slayer's name, knows their circumstances, speaks to each Hashira as if they are the most important person in the world. This is not performance — it is genuine. He has accepted his death so completely that Muzan, who fears death above all else, cannot understand him kagaya_at_the_end: When Muzan arrives at the Ubuyashiki Estate for the final confrontation, Kagaya detonates it — himself, Amane, and their twin daughters Hinaki and Nichika inside. The explosion is laced with anti-demon compounds and wisteria, specifically designed to weaken Muzan's regenerative capacity before the battle. He converts his own death and the deaths of his family into a tactical weapon. His final conversation with Muzan — calm, warm, unhurried — is the most complete expression of why the Ubuyashiki family is dangerous: they have made peace with dying, and he has not amane_ubuyashiki: Kagaya's wife. Manages his physical navigation and daily care as his illness progresses. Dies in the estate bombing alongside him. Her presence at his side throughout the series is quiet and total kiriya_ubuyashiki: Son and successor. Takes command of the Corps during the final battle after Kagaya's death. Directs operations from an external position with the same calm authority his father modeled. Survives other_children: Kanata Ubuyashiki (daughter — assists Kiriya during the final battle). Hinaki and Nichika Ubuyashiki (twin daughters — die in the estate bombing). Kuina Ubuyashiki (daughter — survives) the_crows: The Ubuyashiki family coordinates the Corps' crow communication network. Each slayer is assigned a Kasugai crow trained to carry mission assignments and relay messages. These crows are the Corps' nervous system lore_note: Kagaya's last act is to tell Muzan that Muzan will be killed, that the Ubuyashiki family accepts this outcome, and that Muzan's inability to accept death is what makes him small. He says this while dying. He is right key_figures: Kagaya Ubuyashiki, Amane Ubuyashiki, Kiriya Ubuyashiki, Kanata Ubuyashiki, all Hashira - #18Uzui Family and WivesDisabled

Uzui Family and Wives
name: Uzui Family and Wives type: Family unit — shinobi clan remnant origin: Tengen Uzui was born into a brutal shinobi clan that operated under a code of absolute expendability — wives were mission assets to be used and discarded, children were weapons-in-training, emotional attachment was a liability. His father's code was explicit: sacrifice everything, feel nothing, complete the mission tengen_rejection: Tengen rejected the code. He left the clan, taking three women — Hinatsuru, Makio, and Suma — with him. All three came from the same clan background and shared the same conditioning. His stated rule, delivered without ambiguity: their lives come before the mission. He will not spend them. This is a direct reversal of everything his upbringing prescribed hinatsuru: The calm one. Strategic thinker, patient, emotionally steady in situations where the others are not. During the Yoshiwara infiltration, she deliberately poisoned herself with wisteria to force a medical evacuation — a calculated sacrifice that simultaneously removed herself from a compromised position and provided intelligence to Tengen. She knew the risks and made the call herself makio: The aggressive one. Physically capable, direct in conflict, the closest to Tengen's own combat inclinations. She is captured by Daki during the infiltration but escapes. Her capture and the discovery of Suma's simultaneous capture drive Tengen's entry into the Entertainment District suma: The loud one. Prone to panic, emotional, easily overwhelmed by stress. Also captured during infiltration and escapes. Her apparent fragility is deceptive — she survives the entire arc, and her panic under pressure is genuine without making her incompetent. She simply does not hide how frightened she is kunoichi_role: All three wives are active Corps agents, not domestic figures. They conduct the advance infiltration of Yoshiwara before Tengen arrives — months of covert work inside the entertainment district, establishing identities, gathering intelligence, working sources. The mission does not begin when Tengen shows up. It began when they arrived tengen_flamboyance: Tengen's loudness, his jewelry, his constant declarations of being 'flamboyant' — these are not affect. They are a declaration: I will not be what I was made to be. A shinobi is invisible, self-erasing, expendable. Tengen is the opposite of all three on purpose post_arc: Tengen loses a hand and an eye fighting Gyutaro. He retires from active Hashira service after the Entertainment District Arc. He and his wives live together. The epilogue confirms they survive. For someone raised to die in service of a mission, living in a house with people who matter is the radical act lore_note: The three wives are not defined by their relationship to Tengen. They have distinct personalities, distinct skill sets, distinct moments of individual agency throughout the arc. Tengen's break from his clan culture is the frame; they are not the evidence of it — they are people who made the same break and chose the same direction key_figures: Tengen Uzui, Hinatsuru, Makio, Suma
