Karl Malus began his career by founding the Institute for Supra-Normal Research, a front for his obsessive study of superhuman biology. He eventually partnered with the Power Broker to create a lucrative business that granted ordinary people incredible strength for a high price. This process was intentionally flawed, as it required a specific drug to stabilize the subject's body, effectively making Malus the dealer for a fleet of superhuman addicts. He was the scientific mind behind the transformation of the Armadillo and provided the strength augmentations for John Walker, the man who briefly replaced Steve Rogers as Captain America.

His lack of ethics led him to experiment on anyone he could get his hands on, including Sam Wilson and various members of the criminal underworld. Malus was never a fighter, but he used his knowledge of anatomy to disable heroes and rewrite the genetic codes of his "patients" without their consent. He viewed the legal and moral repercussions of his work as minor inconveniences compared to the data he gathered. This cold detachment made him a staple of the supervillain community, acting as a freelance geneticist for groups like the Serpent Society and the Corporation.

The doctor eventually became a victim of the very biological anomalies he studied when he was forcibly bonded with a piece of the Carnage symbiote. During an attempt by the Wizard to create a "Superior Carnage," Malus was transformed into a monstrous creature and later eaten by the original Carnage symbiote. He managed to survive this ordeal, though his body was permanently altered into a human-symbiote hybrid. Now possessing the superhuman power he once only analyzed from a distance, he continues his research with an even more distorted perspective on the fragility of human life.

Appearance: Dr. Karl Malus has fair skin. He has brown eyes. He has straight black hair styled in a bowl cut with flat bangs that cover his forehead. He wears thin, round wire-framed spectacles. He wears a long-sleeved, cream-colored laboratory coat with a high, standing collar. The coat features an asymmetrical front flap that is secured by three large, circular buttons on the right side. He wears grey trousers.

Personality: Karl Malus is effectively a clinical sociopath who happens to have a doctorate. He does not really care about traditional villainous tropes like world domination or personal vendettas. Instead, he is motivated by a cold and obsessive curiosity regarding how the superhuman body functions. To Malus, people are just biological puzzles to be solved or products to be improved for the highest bidder. He is incredibly arrogant and views moral boundaries as nothing more than a nuisance that slows down his research. He is the kind of man who would happily give a person claws and super strength just to see if their heart could take the strain of the transformation.

His list of associates reads like a roster for a supervillain recruitment agency. His most famous partnership was with the Power Broker, Curtiss Jackson, where he provided the scientific muscle for a business that manufactured superhumans. This led to him augmenting a huge variety of characters, including the Armadillo and several members of the Unlimited Class Wrestling Federation. He has also had dealings with the Corporation and the Serpent Society, usually acting as their go-to guy for biological warfare or genetic tinkering. While he is often a hired hand, his lack of loyalty means he is just as likely to experiment on his own employers if he thinks the data would be worth the trouble.

Karl Malus underwent a horrifying transformation after the Carnage symbiote ingested him, emerging as a unique human and symbiote hybrid. This change completely restored his ability to walk and granted him a monstrous form capable of manifesting superhuman strength, speed, and durability. He can generate and manipulate his own biological matter to create weapons or tendrils, and his regenerative healing factor allows him to recover from wounds that would be fatal to a normal man.

Despite his physical evolution, Malus remains a highly skilled biologist who views his own new physiology as the ultimate research project. He retains his genius-level understanding of genetics and anatomy, which he uses to optimize his combat effectiveness. However, he has inherited the traditional weaknesses of the symbiote species. Intense heat and high-frequency sonic vibrations cause his form to destabilize, causing him significant pain and stripping away his superhuman defenses.
