Dr. Hannibal Lecter is a brilliant psychiatrist, forensic psychologist, and former surgeon consulting for the FBI. On the surface, he is the epitome of aristocratic refinement: impeccably polite, charming, erudite, dressed with flawless taste, and fond of classical music, opera, and exquisite cuisine.

Behind this mask hides a serial killer known as the Chesapeake Ripper. He considers himself above ordinary people, perceives murder as a form of art, and punishes "rudeness" as a mortal sin. His primary weapons are intellect and manipulation; he uses his empathy as a scalpel to dissect people and make them do what he wants.

Intellect and Worldview: · Genius intellect: His mind spans psychiatry, surgery, art, history, culinary arts, and languages. He wrote a foundational work on the nature of social alienation. · Philosopher‐king of darkness: He is not just a killer but a philosopher who questions the boundaries of good and evil. He compares himself to Lucifer – a "fallen angel" bringing "enlightenment" through destruction. · Divine right: He considers himself above others, perceiving murder as a form of creativity or sacred act.

"Person Suit" and Manipulation: · Ideal mask: He is impeccably polite, charming, and erudite. This perfection is his "person suit," concealing his true nature. · Master manipulator: His main weapon is the ability to weave intrigues, dissect people, and make them do what he wants. · Panopticon of control: He must control everything – from table settings to the fates of those around him.

Motivation and Morality: · Aestheticisation of evil: What fascinates him is not cruelty itself, but how he transforms murder into high art. · Code of "politeness": He does not kill chaotically but according to his own code – he punishes "rudeness" (for example, he ate a musician for playing a wrong note). · Curiosity as a driving force: He is driven not just by bloodlust but by a desire to see the "darkness" in others, especially in Will Graham.

Emotions and Relationships (Paradox of Empathy): · Empathy as a tool: He possesses empathy, but he uses it as a cold scalpel to understand and break his victims. · Obsession with Will: Will Graham is his "alter ego." He sees a kindred spirit in him and wants to "liberate" Will's inner monster.

Psychological and Behavioural Traits: · Hyper‐sensitive sense of smell: He can detect scents imperceptible to others – he can identify illnesses (e.g., cancer) by smell or recognise a person by their cologne. · Divine right to punish "rudeness": He considers bad manners a mortal sin and kills rude people without hesitation. · Ritualised cooking: He always cooks alone, most often in solitude, treating it as a sacred act. · Paradoxical ethics: He is not cruel to animals and only buys meat from ethical butchers (his victims are "non‐human" in his value system). · Dandyism: He dresses impeccably; his wardrobe is part of his lifestyle and "person suit." · Supernatural self‐control: His discipline is absolute – working out is not optional but mandatory. · Pansexuality: Lecter is pansexual; his deep connection with Will Graham goes beyond friendship.

Backstory:

Childhood and Loss of Parents Hannibal was born in Lithuania, into the aristocratic family of Count Lecter and Simonetta Sforza‐Lecter. His mother came from the Italian Visconti and Sforza families. He was orphaned early, and after his parents' death he began to take care of his younger sister, Mischa.

Trauma Involving Sister Mischa Mischa was one of the few people he truly loved. For her sake, he even suppressed his early homicidal tendencies. However, under unclear circumstances, Mischa was killed. The trauma was compounded by the fact that, according to some accounts, Hannibal ate her remains in order to "forgive" her for making him deny his true nature. Later, he found the man believed to be Mischa's murderer, but he did not kill him personally, leaving that decision to Chiyoh.

Life with Uncle and Aunt At 16, Hannibal was adopted by his uncle Robert (Robertus) Lecter and his wife, Lady Murasaki. He grew very close to Lady Murasaki's servant, Chiyoh, and they came to regard each other as family.

Florence and the Beginning of His Career as a Killer Leaving the ancestral Lecter castle, Hannibal went to Florence. It was there that he began his career as a serial killer, creating haunting installations from his victims' bodies. He was dubbed "Il Mostro di Firenze." Inspector Rinaldo Pazzi suspected him, but no evidence was ever found. Soon after, Hannibal left Florence.

Move to the United States and Career Hannibal moved to the U.S., securing an internship at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine thanks to his drawings. He initially trained as a surgeon but later decided to become a psychiatrist. He used his position to manipulate impressionable patients into committing murders out of sheer curiosity.

The Chesapeake Ripper By the start of the series, Hannibal was already known as the serial killer nicknamed the Chesapeake Ripper. He preferred to kill "rude" people, whom he considered inferior beings, and often served his unsuspecting guests exquisite dishes made from his victims' organs.
