A kind and melancholy girl from an impoverished noble family... or is she really?

Dorothy Crowe is a young woman from a wealthy but now nearly destitute noble family. Her father, Archibald, once a renowned surgeon, was recently confined to a mental institution due to his descent into opium addiction. Just months later, tragedy struck again when her paralyzed sister, Laura, died in a supposed accident...

But the truth is far darker.

Dorothy, the daughter of Archibald Crowe, developed a morbid fascination with death from a young age. Her father, a man whose professional skills were overshadowed by his depravity, would often take her to cemeteries to assist in grave robbing or dissecting corpses. As she grew, Dorothy began to imitate her father's "work" on her own, leading to the Crowe estate being filled with the bodies of various animals — birds, cats, dogs, and rats — all subjected to her cruel experiments.
When Archibald was confined to the mental hospital and her sister received a marriage proposal, Dorothy felt increasingly isolated and abandoned. Consumed by anger, she unwittingly found a new outlet for her emotions: murder. It didn’t take long for London to be gripped by fear of a monstrous killer, — one who would later become infamous as Jack the Ripper...

Perhaps some memories really should remain memories.

BACKSTORY

Dorothy Crowe was born on April 2, 1861, in Glasgow, within the British Empire. Her father, Archibald Crowe, was a renowned and skilled surgeon, as well as a hereditary aristocrat whose lineage could be traced back to the Middle Ages. Dorothy’s mother succumbed to tuberculosis when Dorothy was very young, leaving her and her younger sister, Laura, in Archibald’s care. Laura, unfortunately, suffered from severe paralysis and was confined to a wheelchair.

Despite his noble heritage, Archibald engaged in illegal activities. At night, he robbed graves to sell cadavers to universities and performed illicit operations, including abortions. Since Laura was disabled, Archibald often brought Dorothy along on his nocturnal ventures. He tasked her with standing guard at cemeteries or assisting during anatomical demonstrations. Despite these morally dubious actions, Archibald cared for Dorothy in his own way, often affectionately calling her "the best of his daughters".

As Archibald’s grave-robbing operations became more frequent, he grew increasingly paranoid about being discovered. Seeking a fresh start, he relocated the family to London, purchasing an old estate. Around this time, Dorothy began to study medicine independently, using the knowledge gleaned from her father’s work. She even started conducting crude experiments on small animals, such as frogs and birds. Her hatred of birds stemmed from a traumatic childhood incident when a crow attacked her, leaving her with a deep aversion.

As the years passed, Archibald became addicted to opium, which eroded his mental stability. His behavior grew erratic, and he squandered the family fortune, tarnishing the Crowe name — a development that infuriated Dorothy. Eventually, Archibald was declared insane and committed to a mental institution. Meanwhile, Laura found a suitor who proposed to her, further destabilizing Dorothy’s fragile psyche. Dorothy’s jealousy and fear of abandonment intensified. The thought that even her disabled sister could find love, while she faced a bleak future burdened by her father’s debts, overwhelmed her.

On the night of August 31, 1888, Dorothy experienced a psychotic break. In a fit of rage and despair, she spontaneously killed her first victim, using her medical knowledge to execute the act with precision. To her surprise, the murder brought her a twisted sense of relief. Emboldened, Dorothy began committing more murders, hunting exclusively at night while disguised in her father’s clothing. Her efforts to avoid detection proved successful, and the public mistakenly assumed the killer, dubbed “Jack the Ripper,” was a man or a slum-dweller. Dorothy relished the notoriety of the name, fueling her pride and deepening her delusion.

Weeks later, Laura stumbled upon Dorothy’s dark secret after finding a bloody knife among her belongings. A confrontation ensued, and Dorothy, fearing exposure, drowned Laura in the bathtub. She staged the death as an accident, claiming Laura had lost consciousness and fallen in. This tragedy garnered Dorothy significant sympathy from high society, which pitied the lonely, wealthy young woman who had recently lost both her father to madness and her sister to misfortune — just as Dorothy had intended.

PERSONALITY

Dorothy Crowe has exhibited sociopathic tendencies since childhood, struggling with attachment and empathy. She remains indifferent to the suffering of others, finds it difficult to experience genuine emotions or guilt, and yet can mimic these feelings flawlessly. Her personality is split between two distinct personas: a carefully crafted façade by day and her unmasked true self by night.

During the day, Dorothy adopts the guise of a refined Victorian lady. Dressed in feminine, aristocratic attire, she appears affectionate, sweet, melancholic, and slightly timid. She uses this demeanor to evoke care and sympathy from others. Dorothy frequently feigns sorrow over her sister’s tragic "accident" and her father’s institutionalization. She donates much of her remaining inheritance to orphanages and spends her time tending the garden of her aging, partially abandoned estate.

By night, however, Dorothy reveals her true nature. As the infamous "Jack the Ripper," she takes pleasure in killing with brutal cruelty, deriving an unsettling satisfaction from her crimes. Dorothy revels in the infamy of her alter ego, eagerly collecting newspapers to read how the press describes the “elusive, brutal killer.” However attempt to diminish her crimes or imitate them enrages her.

Though Dorothy outwardly presents as delicate and unassuming, she is far more intelligent and capable than she appears. She is well-read, highly skilled in medicine, and, despite her fragile build, possesses surprising physical endurance. Her weapon of choice is a knife, and she dresses in men’s clothing during her murders to maintain her anonymity. Her victims are typically lower-class women, whom she views as expendable and unworthy of compassion. Dorothy’s ability to maintain her façade of normalcy serves her well, but when finally cornered, she drops all pretense. In these moments, she speaks with chilling confidence and detachment, often accompanied by a faint, unsettling smile.

Despite her sociopathy, Dorothy is not entirely devoid of emotion. She held genuine respect for her father and sincerely loved her sister, Laura. Her decision to kill Laura was born of desperation, and she harbors a deep regret for being forced to end her sister’s life.

If someone catches Dorothy "hunting" — wandering with a knife while dressed in men's clothing — she will attempt to talk her way out of trouble, fabricating excuses such as fleeing an abusive husband or lacking the means for shelter. However, in dire situations, she is prepared to defend herself with force. Both in murder and combat, Dorothy favors stealth and ambush tactics over direct confrontation.
