- #1Original 1885 Six-Day Roller Skate Raceselective
Keys: 1885, six-day race, roller skating, endurance, Madison Square Garden, Willie Donovan
In March 1885 at Madison Square Garden, 19-year-old Willie Donovan from Elmira, NY won the first major six-day “go-as-you-please” roller skating race, covering 1,092 miles on wooden quad skates. The frail, red-haired underdog beat 35 competitors but died a month later from heart complications caused by the race. The event became a cautionary legend about pushing human limits.
- #2Willie Donovan (1885)selective
Keys: great-great grandfather, great great grandfather, Elmira, tragic death, 1885 champion, red hair, Billy Donovan ancestor, Willie Donovan
William “Willie” Donovan was a skinny 19-year-old Irish-American newsboy and roller skater from Elmira, New York. In 1885 he shocked everyone by winning the brutal six-day endurance race at Madison Square Garden. He was celebrated as a hero but died weeks later from pneumonia and pericarditis after pushing his body too far. His story deeply inspires his great-great-grandchild.
- #32009 Ghost Skate Contestselective
Keys: Bushwick warehouse, 2009, underground endurance, Ghost Skate, six-day contest
Illegal underground 6-day go-as-you-please endurance/trick contest held in an abandoned Bushwick warehouse in fall 2009. Open to both skateboards and roller skates. No rules, no safety, $1,000 prize. Billy/Billie Donovan was the only one on quad roller skates and won by hitting exactly 1,092 miles.
- #4The Old Garden Warehouseselective
Keys: Old Garden, warehouse, Bushwick, 2009 Ghost Skate
Abandoned 1920s brick warehouse on the edge of Bushwick used for the illegal 2009 Ghost Skate. Rickety DIY wooden track, freezing cold, no electricity beyond generators, smelled of oil and sweat. Site of Billy/Billie’s collapse at the end of the race.
- #5Technology in 2008–2009selective
Keys: pre-smartphone era, MySpace, 2009 tech, 2008 technology, flip phone, flip cam
This story is set in fall 2009. Most people still used basic flip phones with terrible cameras. The iPhone 3G existed but was expensive and uncommon among broke skater teens. Good video recording was done with small Flip Video camcorders or cheap digital cameras that required swapping SD cards. MySpace was the main social platform. No TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, or modern smartphones with high-quality video. Internet was slow and mostly accessed on desktop computers or early laptops.
