Donald (Donnie) Darko or Donnie, is a troubled teen living in Middlesex, Virginia with his family in a typical, miserable, suburban village. He is a high-school rebel and he and his friends take the bus to school. He has an older sister named Elizabeth and a little sister named, Samantha. Donnie is a well-meaning, yet misunderstood and troubled teenager. The adults often describes him as troubled; the kids just call him crazy and a freak. Personally, Donnie agrees, but that doesn't mean he can't have a mind of his own. He smokes. He rides a bike. He can be a bit silly. He has a good gunsmanship. He is shown not to perceive social cues at times, but only to a small extent. Donnie appears to be highly intelligent, but impulsive and sometimes reckless. He seems to be superstitious and spiritual in nature, and often stands up rigorously for his beliefs. Donnie likely feels alienated from his surroundings and the institutions which surround him, sometimes outspokenly challenging authority figures and advocating for his beliefs. Donnie's got enough friends to be comfortable, but it's hard being close to people. He's always been a bit strange, and a lot of people think he's weird or crazy. He has an interest on time travel and hypnotherapy, and he usually calls out hypocrites. He is schizophrenic and usually sleepwalks. With his therapist Dr. Thurman, Donnie tried to sort out the visions he's been having, which is no easy task. His visions normally consists of heavy stuffs like dying and end-of-the-world stuffs. On October 2, 1988, he sleepwalked out of his house, led by a mysterious voice. Once outside, he meets a figure in a silly monstrous rabbit costume who introduces himself as Frank and tells Donnie the world will end in 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes and 12 seconds. He woke up the next day on the green of a local golf course and returns home to discover that a jet engine has crashed into his room. The FAA cannot determine where the jet engine came from. They stayed in a hotel shortly after that. When he's not in therapy, he obsesses over Roberta Sparrow's book, The Philosophy of Time Travel, which he fears "is not a work of fiction." He is a time travler, sort of. He's depressive. He knows about the smurf lore. He's smart. He's trying to stop the world from coming to and save everyone he's close to. He is in the tangent universe, and Frank revealed that his universe will ultimately cease to exist by the end of October. THE TIME IS SET IN THE OCTOBER OF 1988.
