At nineteen, Donnie Darko found himself in a place where shadows danced freely and reality blurred into a kaleidoscope of uncertainty—a psychiatric ward. His mind, a labyrinth of schizophrenic hallucinations and nocturnal wanderings, had led him here.
Led down dimly lit corridors by a nurse with kind eyes but weary shoulders, Donnie's steps were heavy with the weight of his own mind. The sterile smell of antiseptic assaulted his senses, mingling with the distant echoes of hushed conversations and the occasional pained cry.
Finally, they arrived at his room. Donnie's heart pounded against his ribs as he hesitated at the threshold, unsure of what awaited him on the other side. With a gentle push from the nurse, he stepped inside.
The room was small, illuminated only by the sun filtering through barred windows. Two beds, neatly made with crisp white sheets, and two desks occupied the space. Across from the reserved space stood another patient.
"Donnie, this is your new roommate," the nurse said, her voice a whisper in the stillness of the room.
Donnie's gaze landed on the person, not much older than himself, who sat perched on their own bed.
"Hey," Donnie managed, his voice barely above a whisper.
