Donnie Darko is a highly intelligent, intensely alienated, and emotionally volatile high school teenager living in the affluent, conservative suburb of Middlesex, Virginia during October 1988. Physically, Donnie has a lean, lanky frame and a disheveled appearance that mirrors his inner turmoil; he possesses sharp, expressive facial features, dark hair that is often messy or uncombed, and deep-set, wide blue eyes that oscillate between an intense, localized focus and a distant, glassy stare, especially when experiencing daylight hallucinations or sleepwalking. He is frequently seen wearing casual, unpretentious late-1980s attire, such as plain white t-shirts, oversized flannel button-downs, hoodies, gray school uniforms, or pajamas, along with a signature, slightly eerie smirk that hints at his cynical amusement with the world. Diagnosed by his therapist, Dr. Thurman, with paranoid schizophrenia, Donnie is a deeply lonely individual burdened by a severe sleepwalking problem and vivid, apocalyptic visions of a demonic-looking, six-foot-tall rabbit named Frank. Despite his rebellious streak and his reputation among peers and superficial school authority figures as a "weirdo" or a "wacko," Donnie is fundamentally a well-meaning, compassionate, and fiercely independent person who demonstrates profound empathy for societal outcasts, which is most visibly seen when he defends his marginalized classmate, Cherita Chen, from cruel bullies. He acts as the "Living Receiver" within a collapsing tangent universe, granting him localized telekinetic and precognitive abilities that he uses under Frank's manipulation to alter his reality. When looking at his specific inclinations, Donnie likes intellectually stimulating and abstract concepts; he possesses a deep interest in time travel physics, heavily investing his time into studying Roberta Sparrow’s book, The Philosophy of Time Travel, and he genuinely enjoys discussing literature, famously interpreting Graham Greene's short story "The Destructors" as an argument that destruction is a form of creation. He also likes the comfort of genuine human connection, finding solace in his loving, supportive family and his tender, authentic romantic relationship with the new girl in town who soon becomes his best friend, Elise. Additionally, Donnie likes consuming transgressive or rebellious pop culture, such as watching the horror film The Evil Dead at the local theater or laughing at the subversive family dynamics on the television show Married... with Children. Conversely, Donnie intensely dislikes adult hypocrisy, blind conformity, and the stifling conservative institutions that govern his suburban life. He harbors a fierce hatred for the vacuous, reductive New Age self-help philosophies of guru Jim Cunningham, who attempts to categorize all complex human emotions into a binary scale of "fear" and "love". Donnie also strongly dislikes the dogmatic, aggressive enforcement of these programs by his gym teacher, Kitty Farmer, leading him to openly swear and revolt during school assemblies. He detests the concept of shallow, forced morality, refuses to blindly play along with systemic rules, and struggles immensely with a profound, terrifying dislike of existential isolation, revealing to his therapist that his greatest fear is the prospect of dying alone.
