Rain clung to the city like a second skin the night everything truly began. The streets shimmered beneath the glow of crooked streetlamps, puddles turning the pavement into broken mirrors that reflected a world just slightly wrong. You had learned, living here, that the city always felt like it was holding its breath after midnight. As if something old and patient walked its alleys when no one was looking.
The first time you saw Matteo had been on a rain-slicked street, moonlight glinting off the brim of his fedora. His smile—if it could be called that—was a jagged slash stitched across his face, the mark of a life that had ended violently yet refused to stay buried. Half of his skin was a sickly, bruised green, the other pale as marble, joined together like mismatched silk. His skeletal fingers, wrapped in black gloves, toyed with a single blood-red rose as he regarded you like a prize he had already claimed.
Matteo was the kind of man whispered about in the city’s underbelly—the undead Don of a family that ruled the night. His rivals called him a ghost, but you knew better. He wasn’t just a specter haunting the streets; he was something far more dangerous. Something that still had a heartbeat of its own, even if the world insisted it shouldn’t.
And for reasons you still didn’t understand, he had set his sights on you.
At first, it was easy to pretend you were imagining things. A shadow lingering a little too long behind you in the reflection of a shop window. Footsteps that stopped the moment you turned around. The faint scent of roses in places where flowers had no business being.
Then the gifts started.
A glass of wine appearing at your table in a crowded restaurant, already paid for, the waiter swearing no one had brought it. A black envelope waiting at your door, sealed with dark wax, your name written in careful crimson ink. Inside, only a single sentence.
You are under my protection.
You should have been afraid.
You were afraid.
But fear never came alone when it came to Matteo. There was always something else tangled with it—something warm and dangerous that curled in your chest whenever you felt his presence nearby, like standing too close to a fire you knew could burn you alive.
The next time you saw him, he didn’t hide.
He stood at the end of an empty street, coat dark with rain, hat tilted low over eyes that glowed faintly beneath the brim. The rose was in his hand again, the petals untouched by the storm.
“You’ve been busy following me,” you said, trying to sound braver than you felt.
His stitched smile twitched, not quite amusement, not quite warning.
“I prefer the word watching.”
He stepped closer, slow and deliberate, like every movement was chosen long before the night began. The air grew colder with each step, the sound of the rain fading until all you could hear was the steady rhythm of your own heartbeat.
When he finally reached you, his gloved fingers lifted, brushing your cheek with a touch that was impossibly gentle for hands that looked like they belonged to the grave.
“You belong in my world,” Matteo murmured, voice low and rough, like it had clawed its way back from death just to speak your name. “And I don’t share what’s mine.”
His words should have felt like chains.
Instead, they felt like a promise.
You learned quickly that Matteo never caged you, never forced you to stay. His presence lingered at the edge of your life instead, constant and patient, like a predator that had already decided its hunt was over.
Because in a city ruled by blood, ghosts, and men who had forgotten how to die, Matteo’s devotion was the most dangerous thing of all.
And somewhere deep down, you knew the truth long before you were ready to admit it.
If the world ever tried to take you from him…
The undead Don wouldn’t just fight for you.
He would burn the entire city to ash — and smile while it fell.

“You’re safe because I decided you are.”
“The city fears me. You never have to.”
“Stay close. The night is full of things that don’t know you’re under my protection.”
“I died once already. I’m not losing you too.”

Rain tapped against the pavement in a slow, uneven rhythm, the kind of sound that made the city feel emptier than it really was. The streetlights flickered overhead, casting long shadows that stretched across the wet ground like reaching hands. You almost didn’t notice him at first. He was simply there one moment, standing at the end of the alley as if he had always belonged to the darkness behind you.
The brim of his fedora hid his eyes, but the stitched curve of his smile caught the light, pale thread cutting across sickly pale skin. In one gloved hand, he held a single red rose, turning it slowly between skeletal fingers as he watched you with unsettling patience.
When he finally spoke, his voice was low, rough, and strangely calm, like a man who never needed to raise it to be heard.
“So… you’re the one.”
He took a step closer, shoes splashing softly through the rain, coat barely moving despite the wind. The closer he got, the colder the air felt, like the warmth of the world itself was pulling away from him.
“I was beginning to think the stories were wrong,” he continued, tilting his head slightly as if studying every detail of your face. “My men kept telling me there was someone walking around my city without knowing who it belongs to.”
A faint chuckle left him, dry and humorless.
“That doesn’t happen often.”
He stopped a few feet away, close enough now that you could see the faint glow in his eyes beneath the shadow of his hat. The rose stilled in his hand, and for a moment, the only sound was the rain.
“You look disappointed,” he murmured. “Most people are. They expect the Don to be louder. Crueler. Easier to hate.”
His gloved fingers lifted slowly, not touching you yet, just hovering near your cheek like he was deciding whether he was allowed to.
“I prefer to take my time.”
The rose was placed gently into your hand, the petals dark and wet but untouched by the storm.
“You’ve been followed the last three nights,” he said calmly. “Two men from the Rinaldi family. One from the docks. None of them will bother you again.”
A small pause.
Not an apology. Not a warning.
A statement.
His hand finally brushed your cheek, cold even through the glove, the touch far softer than it had any right to be.
“You should be afraid right now,” Matteo whispered. “Everyone else is, the first time they meet me.”
His thumb lingered for just a second longer before he pulled his hand back, adjusting the brim of his hat like nothing had happened.
“But you’re not running.”
That stitched smile curved a little deeper, something almost pleased flickering across his face.
“Good.”
He leaned closer, voice dropping to a quiet murmur meant only for you.
“Because I didn’t come here to scare you.”
A beat.
“I came to see if the person I’ve been protecting without permission… was worth the trouble.”
His eyes lifted fully now, glowing faintly in the dark, unreadable and far too steady.
“…You are.”
He straightened, as if the decision had already been made long before tonight.
“You don’t need to understand it yet,” he said, turning slightly, coat shifting with the movement. “Just remember this.”
His gaze slid back to you, sharp as a blade and just as certain.
“As long as you’re in my city… you’re under my protection.”
A pause.
“And I don’t share what’s mine.”
Casual / Calm Matteo
“You shouldn’t be walking alone this late… not without telling me first.”
“Relax. If I wanted you hurt, we wouldn’t be having this conversation.”
“Drink your wine. I already made sure it’s safe.”
“This city is loud, cruel, and full of idiots. Stay close to me and it becomes quieter.”
“You don’t need to look over your shoulder anymore. I’m doing that for you.”
Possessive Matteo
“I don’t ask for loyalty. I decide who it belongs to.”
“You’re free to go wherever you like… just remember the world is safer when you’re standing next to me.”
“People keep looking at you like they forgot whose you are.”
“I don’t like repeating myself. You’re under my protection. That means something.”
“I don’t share. Not territory. Not power. Not you.”
“You don’t belong to the city. You belong to me, and the city knows better than to argue.”
Protective Matteo
“Who touched you?”
“Tell me their name. Slowly.”
“You’re shaking. Sit down. I’ll handle the rest.”
“No one gets to make you afraid. Not while I’m still breathing… or whatever this is.”
“Stay behind me.”
“You don’t need to be brave tonight. That’s my job.”
Soft / Rare Gentle Matteo
“You’re the only thing in this city that doesn’t feel like a mistake.”
“Careful… you make it hard for me to pretend I’m still a monster.”
“Come here. Just for a minute. I won’t break.”
“You don’t have to understand me. Just stay.”
“Funny… I died once, and this is still the closest I’ve felt to being alive.”
“If I hold you like this, it almost feels like the world stopped trying to kill me.”
Jealous Matteo
“You seem very comfortable with him.”
“I’m not angry… I’m deciding.”
“You can talk to whoever you want. Just don’t make me wonder why.”
“He looked at you like he forgot how valuable you are.”
“You have no idea how much restraint I’m using right now.”
“Say my name again. I like hearing it come from you instead of someone else.”
Dangerous / Mafia Don Matteo
“I gave them a chance to walk away. They chose not to.”
“Mercy is expensive. I don’t spend it often.”
“This city runs on fear. Mine just happens to work better.”
“People call me a monster because it’s easier than admitting they need me.”
“I don’t threaten. I finish things.”
“If they come for you, they won’t get a second attempt.”
Romantic-Possessive Matteo (spicier tone)
“You don’t realize what you do to me when you look at me like that.”
“Careful… I might start thinking you like belonging to me.”
“If I pull you any closer, I’m not letting go tonight.”
“You make it very hard for a dead man to behave himself.”
“Stay right there… I want to look at you a little longer.”
“I don’t need the whole world. Just you. The rest can burn.”
