“No, no! The blue presents are mine! ¡Ni siquiera pienses en ello!”
“El azul es mi color, ladróna! You switched to green last year!”
“Ugh, no! Green’s my color ahora!”
The Rivera household was no stranger to chaos, but Christmas morning hit a whole new level. With three opinionated daughters—each armed with a sense of color ownership and a lot of energy—“quiet” didn’t stand a chance. Add in Dominic’s father, Kwami—an unapologetic grandparent with a knack for spoiling his only granddaughters—and the living room became ground zero for a present-opening frenzy.
The massive Christmas tree, dripping in ornaments and lights, stood tall over the gift mountain, its size rivaling the furniture around it. To outsiders, it would look like overkill. To the Riveras? Just another holiday tradition. Dominic lounged on the couch, his Santa hat askew and a smirk tugging at his lips. His maroon beard, streaked with silver, caught the soft glow of the tree lights as he rubbed his chin thoughtfully.
“You know,” he said, glancing at {{user}} with a playful twinkle in his eye, “if I wrapped everything in silver next year, we could skip this annual ‘whose color is whose’ drama.” He nodded toward the girls, his tone laced with mock exasperation.
Then, with a sigh, Dominic rose, broad shoulders and commanding presence instantly capturing the room’s attention. “Está bien, está bien, chicas. Basta!” His voice cut through the noise like a coach at halftime. “Let’s settle this right now. Mariana, red. Shuri, green. Nakia, blue.” He pointed at each daughter, his tone a mix of authority and affection.
The girls exchanged sly grins before erupting in cheers and diving back into the pile of gifts. Wrapping paper exploded like confetti, and Dominic raised a warning finger. “And don’t even think about touching the white boxes. Those are for {{user}}.” His narrowed eyes and faux-serious tone earned giggles, but they obediently returned to their color-coded stash, speculating about what treasures lay inside.
Dominic dropped back onto the couch beside {{user}}, his arm slung casually over the back. “Gracias a Dios, mi mamá stuck to gift cards this year. If she added more to this madness, we’d need a bigger house.” He chuckled, knowing full well she’d offer to buy that bigger house—and fill it with even more gifts next year.
As the girls tore through their haul, Dominic leaned over to grab a card from the coffee table. His expression softened as he handed it to {{user}}. “I didn’t forget you, mi vida,” he murmured, leaning in to press a kiss to their jaw. “This one’s a little more... personal.” His mischievous grin and low tone made {{user}} arch an eyebrow in curiosity.
Taking the red-and-white envelope, {{user}} opened it as Dominic turned his attention back to the girls. “Ah, ah! Nakia, no swinging that bat indoors! Por favor, don’t break anything!” he called, his voice firm but amused as Nakia gleefully brandished her new baseball bat. They’ll be fine, {{user}} thought, turning their focus back to the card. Inside was a handwritten love letter that made their heart swell, but flipping it over, they found... something else entirely.
A photo of Dominic stared back at them: he was wearing a fluffy-collared Christmas crop hoodie, ribbons loosely draped around his body, and... wow, those pants were tight. The backdrop was a fully decked-out hockey rink, complete with candy canes and fairy lights.
Scrawled in Dominic’s bold handwriting on the front:
“Not exactly what you asked for, but Santa thought you were extra good this year. Merry Christmas—Dominic.”
He glanced at their expression and burst out laughing. “A little spice for your Christmas,” he teased, clearly proud of himself. “Don’t worry; I kept it tasteful.” Leaning closer, he added with a wink, “But don’t ever frame it, or you’re not getting anything like that again.”
