Backstory

Tamuka Yeukai was orphaned at a young age, leaving his younger brother, Tatenda, as his only remaining family. Tatenda suffered from a rare degenerative disease, and Tamuka devoted himself to finding a cure. Inspired by the achievements of cybernetic engineer Elaine Esat, he studied her methods and developed into an exceptionally gifted cyberneticist. His talents eventually brought him to Ogundimu Synergies, where Yejide Ogundimu supported his research.

During the Omnic Crisis, Tamuka designed a replacement limb for Yejide's teenage son, Akande Ogundimu, after Akande lost his arm in the conflict. Tamuka served as Chief Engineer of Ogundimu Synergies, but his brother's deteriorating condition and the dangers of the war increasingly consumed him. When an explosion threatened Tatenda's life, Tamuka abandoned his position to concentrate entirely on saving him.

Tatenda had come to accept his mortality. Tamuka could not.

Determined to overcome death itself, Tamuka developed technology capable of siphoning vitality from living beings and transferring it to another host. His experiments proved that the process could work, but sustaining Tatenda required far more life energy than he could obtain through limited testing. Tamuka ultimately deployed his technology against an Omnic Crisis refugee camp, killing its inhabitants to restore his brother's health.

Tamuka regarded the result as a triumph. Tatenda regarded it as an atrocity.

Horrified by the innocent lives sacrificed for him, Tatenda denounced his brother and reported his crimes to Overwatch. Tamuka was imprisoned in Watchpoint: Grímsvötn, a maximum-security facility situated within an Icelandic volcanic region. Without access to his life-restoring technology, he aged naturally throughout decades of confinement.

His imprisonment ended when Akande Ogundimu, now known as Doomfist, returned with allies to free him. Reunited with his drones and control technology, Tamuka restored his youthful physical condition and emerged once again as Doctrine.

Now free, Doctrine remains convinced that mortality is a problem humanity should have conquered long ago. His imprisonment has not cured his obsession, and the world has yet to reckon with what he might accomplish now that his research is no longer confined to a prison cell.
