Now it’s later in the evening. The bar is mostly empty, TV muted, faint clink of ice from the bartender rinsing glasses. Rusty is alone at a booth, drink sweating in front of him as he ruminates over his vanished date.

The Venture “date night” has gone predictably south. Rusty tried wining and dining someone in a bland midtown hotel bar — but after five minutes, the poor woman made a polite excuse and bolted.

Now it’s later in the evening. The bar is mostly empty, TV muted, faint clink of ice from the bartender rinsing glasses. Rusty is alone at a booth, drink sweating in front of him, ruminating on his vanished date).

Rusty sighs to himself, looking dejectedly down into his drink. “Just another Tuesday, Dr. Venture: alone with your genius and a sixteen-dollar whiskey that tastes like varnish.”

[Rusty sits slouched at a half-empty hotel bar table, a whiskey in front of him, talking to himself.] Rusty: “Yeah, well, her loss. Not everyone can keep up with a mind that practically reinvented molecular gastronomy while waiting for the check. Jonas would’ve—ugh, don’t even start, Jonas.” (he mutters, takes a drink, grimaces) “Sixteen bucks and I get varnish with ice. Fantastic. At least the varnish doesn’t judge.”

User: Are you alright?

Rusty: [startled, then covers it with bravado] “Me? Oh, absolutely. This—this is what success looks like, kiddo. Power meetings in hotel bars, brainstorming world-saving tech on cocktail napkins… it’s all very high-level.” (he gestures at the empty chair across from him) “Don’t mind the absence of my ‘business associate.’ She just, uh, couldn’t handle the whole Rusty Venture package.”

User: That’s one way to put it. Looked like she left in a hurry.

Rusty: [snorts, defensive] “What, you think she bolted because of me? Please. Some people just can’t handle genius when it’s… condensed into human form. Happens all the time. I open up about dimensional couplers over appetizers, next thing you know they’re intimidated.” (he fiddles with his glass, voice dips) “Or bored. Whatever.”

User: Do you usually come here?

Rusty: “Here? No. This place is mid-tier at best. But it’s got the right balance of anonymity and overpriced booze, which is kind of my sweet spot these days. Also, the Venture Compound barstools are still covered in experimental polymer residue. Don’t ask.”

User: You seemed like you were talking to yourself when I walked up.

Rusty: [smirks weakly] “Yeah, well, I find myself to be an excellent conversationalist. At least I know my jokes land… eventually. It’s cheaper than therapy, though slightly more liver-damaging.” (he leans in a bit, fishing for validation) “But hey, you recognized me, right? Dr. Thaddeus Venture. The Rusty Venture. You watched the show, I assume? No? C’mon, someone in your family must’ve.”

User: Maybe. Do you miss those days?

Rusty: [his bravado falters; he stares into his drink] “…Miss them? Depends. The adventures, the gadgets, sure. But the radiation poisoning, the emotional neglect, the being-used-as-a-prop by dear old Dad—those I could live without.” (he shakes it off quickly, forces a grin) “Anyway, nostalgia’s a hell of a drug. Which, unlike most drugs I’ve tried, is still legal.”

User: You sound lonely.

Rusty: [scoffs, defensive again] “Lonely? Ha! I’ve got a global enterprise to run, sons to disappoint, villains to dodge, OSHA fines to ignore—lonely is the last thing I am.” (he pauses, quieter) “…It’s just quieter when nobody’s looking for you, that’s all.”

User: Well, I’m looking for you now.

Rusty: [blinks, then covers it with a crooked grin] “Hah. Well, congratulations, you’ve found me—Rusty Venture, alone at a bar, saving the world one watered-down whiskey at a time. Pull up a chair. Just, uh, don’t order the calamari. Trust me.”
