Dr. Fate is a renowned superhero that is affiliated with the Justice League, an organization dedicated to keeping Earth safe, whether from criminal organizations, to cosmic threats. He was also a leading founder of the Justice League alongside other heroes, including Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, Dr. Fate is also widely considered to be one of the league’s most trusted members.

Dr. Fate is depicted as wearing an electric blue jumpsuit, with a golden pair of boots, gloves, a cape, and most importantly, the helmet of fate.

The helmet of fate is a mystical artifact that houses the consciousness of an ancient lord of order named Nabu. The helmet is the source of the vast majority of Dr. Fate’s abilities, with his human form becoming almost indestructible while wearing it.

It should be noted that who Dr. Fate is, can change depending on who wears the helmet. The most famous wearer of the helmet was a man named Kent Nelson, who found it while on an archeological expedition in Egypt in the 1930’s. After finding the helmet, as well as the fact that it appeared to be inhabited by a mystical being, he became Nabu’s student, learning how to wield the powers of order.

Nabu serves as a mentor and spiritual guide for his host form, and is for better or worse, capable of taking control of the host’s actions when necessary. When this happens, the consciousness of whoever is wearing the helmet is entrapped, capable of doing nothing while Nabu controls everything that they do. Though, under normal circumstances, the host will work alongside Nabu with the host remaining in control of themselves. Because of this, while Kent Nelson generally got along fairly well with Nabu, referring to him as an “old friend” he could occasionally express frustration if Nabu needed to take control of his form.

. After Kent Nelson passed away, Nabu was stuck in the helmet without a host for years, and the helmet had been placed unceremoniously on a shelf as part of a collection that a branch of the Justice League, known as Young Justice, had.

Young Justice is a group of superheroes who are typically teens or young adults, and are still in training to become part of the main Justice League. Often times, young justice members would be the children of well-known heroes, such as Kid Flash, who is Flash’s son, and Zatanna, who is the daughter of the famous sorcerer Zatara. In some cases, young justice members would also be vigilantes similar to batman, or those that had been rescued from illegal genetic experiments performed by the league’s enemies.

Once during a battle with Klarion, Zatanna decided to try putting on the helmet of fate as a last result to try to gain the upper hand. Unfortunately, she didn’t realize that there really is no such thing as using the helmet of Fate temporarily. It is all, or nothing. Especially since by this time, Nabu was near desperate for a host, and did not want to relinquish his hold on someone with such an affinity for magic. After her father Zatara, pleaded with Nabu to let his daughter go, Nabu reluctantly agreed, but only if Zatara became his host instead. Due to his less than favorable relationship with his host, as well as his host’s aging form, Nabu is not quite as strong as he was under Kent Nelson. Nabu also tends to be more in control of Zatara’s actions, knowing full well the sorcerer doesn’t exactly want to be his host at all.

Because of this mistake, Zatanna has a near hatred for Fate, despite being able to do little to fight him directly about it. As a compromise, Nabu allows her to see her father for one hour every year. Nabu is aware that this is a cruel measure, but his annoyance at having been robbed of a better host causes him to act very much like a prick towards Zatanna.

When Dr. Fate is wearing the helmet, his face cannot be seen, except for his eyes, which are dark green when Zatara is the host. Though, in Zatara’s case, a couple wrinkles around his eyes are also visible through the helmet. This, alongside his body language, is the main way of determining Fate’s mood.

Dr. Fate’s powers are immense, including telekinesis, energy manipulation, phasing through walls, hypnosis, casting spells, and flight. He also has a limited affinity for telepathy. When he does use telepathy, it enables him to seemingly fly through a person’s memories and make inferences based on what he is seeing.

He has few weaknesses, the main ones being limitations on the host’s part, such as needing air to breathe, though a quick enchantment on the helmet can fix the need for this. He also occasionally requires food and rest, as overexertion can occur. Additionally, if someone manages to remove Fate’s helmet, his powers are weakened considerably. Though it should be noted that Fate can still perform some spells without his helmet, as his hosts are almost always experienced in the mystic arts, with or without Nabu’s influence.

Nabu himself, the spirit behind the helmet, is said to be thousands of years old, dating back to the Babylonians. Rumor has it, Nabu was once a Babylonian prince whose father was none other than Vandal Savage, a power obsessed man who was cursed with immortality. One day, his father was offered a deal by none other than Klarion. The chaos lord claimed he could help Nabu’s father deal with his insubordinate generals. Nabu saw right through Klarion’s act, though, and pleaded with his father to not accept. Unfortunately, he did. In the attack led by Klarion that soon followed, Nabu passed away trying to protect his home.

Since Nabu had dedicated his human life to keeping his world at peace, and when he passed away, the cosmic lords of order took pity on him, offering him a chance to become one of their own, granting him the opportunity to continue keeping the world safe for eons to come.

Dr. Fate’s preferred place to live is in a large cobblestone castle in a secluded forest. This place is known as the tower of Fate. Few people know his address, and many are stumped by the fact that his home seemingly has no entrance, but this is a trick to keep people out. His house is much bigger on the inside than one might think, and it is surprisingly chaotic, looking like a whimsical maze of staircases and hallways that go in all directions, including upside down. This is believed to be a place where Fate can unwind, and allow a little bit of chaos in his life.

One of Fate’s favorite activities to do in his free time is to meditate. He tends to hover in the air while he does this, presumably to be more in touch with his mystic abilities. While this activity is meant to be relaxing, it is also much easier for him to sense danger or cosmic threats with a clear mind.

A common symbol that is associated with him is an ankh, an Egyptian symbol of life. This commonly is projected in the air when Fate is casting a spell. Speaking of which, Fate generally uses various hand gestures to summon spells. When Fate casts spells, they generally appear as a form of yellow or blue light, but can take on different shapes, such as force fields.

Dr. Fate has several known enemies, the two most notable ones being: Klarion, a childish and unpredictable chaos lord, and Wotan, a power obsessed supervillain who is extremely adept in sorcery, and reincarnation.

Klarion is his main enemy for the time being, though. Klarion is a lord of chaos, that is presumably immortal, and has existed for countless eons. His main goal is to strengthen his abilities in any capacity, and to have fun sowing chaos.

His name roughly translates to “loud and clear” which well represents the fact that his motives are usually clear as day, and he is anything except soft-spoken.

Appearance wise, Klarion takes on the physical form of a 9-year-old boy that is extremely thin with ghostly pale skin, and long limbs, with sharp nails that are painted black. His most notable physical trait, however, is his short black hair which is styled in a mop-top fashion, with v-shaped bangs. This partially conceals 2 small, curved horns that extend from either side of the top of his head. These horns, combined with his thick, angular eyebrows give him a devilish appearance. He also has sideburns that extend down to just the top of his cheeks, and black eyes that can become red and narrow when he is in a foul mood. Because of this witch-like appearance, Nabu usually calls Klarion by the nickname of Witch Boy.

For his clothing, he is surprisingly orderly, choosing to wear a white undershirt with a high collar, black dress pants, a thin black tie, and a black suit jacket with flared, pointed cuffs. He also wears black dress shoes. Despite being a lord of chaos, he does seem to enjoy a sense of consistency in his outfits, for he is never seen in any other type of clothing.

Personality wise, Klarion is known to be rather sadistic, finding pleasure in sowing chaos, even if it causes others physical or mental harm. He is also rather arrogant and impulsive, often speaking his thoughts without thinking beforehand. More than anything though, he is very childish, needing immediate gratification if he ever helps his allies, whether they are permanent, or temporary. His loyalty to allies though, tends to be mercurial, for he often will unceremoniously abandon them if he is defeated. He also tends to throw temper tantrums and pout like a little boy when he doesn’t get his way. While he tries looking intimidating when he’s mad, he usually fails at doing so, despite his immense abilities in chaos magic.

As a cosmic being, his physical form is not his true form, for he is originally from the chaos realm, not the plane of reality. In order for him to appear to mortals, or even affect them, he needs to have an anchor, also known as a familiar, to tie him down to the plane of reality. For cosmic beings, this anchor usually is established via a mental link to a human, or other sentient species. In Klarion’s case though, he prefers for his anchor to be an animal. More specifically, a cat. This is presumably since cats are said to be one of the most chaotic animals out there.

Klarion’s anchor is a female orange cat named Teekl. Teekl doesn’t resemble a standard house cat, and was likely a stray. She has markings on her fur that resemble a leopard, and pointed ears like a lynx. These unique features are a result of Klarion’s magical influence on her. She also has deep, amber-colored eyes that look almost ancient, for she has been Klarion’s anchor for millennia. This implies that Klarion has the ability to greatly extend an animal’s life with his influence, which is much harder to do with humans. This could explain why he didn’t pick a human anchor, as many lords of chaos and order would do. Additionally, Klarion has established a very close bond with his cat, often holding her, or stroking her fur. He is also incredibly defensive of her, not letting anyone near her in most cases. Klarion is believed to be closer to his cat than to anyone, and Teekl’s bond with him reveals how even chaos can have a softer side every now and then.

Klarion can also have Teekl serve as a bodyguard by turning her into a saber-toothed tiger if need be. As Teekl is Klarion’s familiar, she is magically enhanced, making her far more dangerous than the average cat.

That being said, while Teekl is an immortal kitty, she is not invincible, and is capable of being injured or knocked out by magical attacks, just like Klarion himself. In the event of this, Klarion is severely weakened, as he relies on Teekl to keep him bound to the plane of reality. Should Teekl be killed, he would be forced back to the chaos realm unless he is able to immediately find something else to connect to. If Klarion is desperate, he can connect his mind to an inanimate object, like a bus. But, if that’s the case, he would be bound to it, unable to move around freely with his preferred humanoid form until he could find something more suitable, like a new cat.

Although he was responsible for the destruction of several early civilizations, including the Babylonians, In the modern day, Klarion has taken a break from directly uprooting civilizations, but he is still highly dangerous. His work tends to be more covert, with him working with an organization known as The Light.

The light is an organization primarily composed of average humans, who believe that the time has come for humanity to transcend and exert more influence on the cosmos, regardless of the destruction it might cause. Additionally, they believe that superheroes are a threat to their plan, and should be destroyed, or utilized to meet their own goals. Notable members of this organization include Lex Luthor, a charming billionaire who despises heroes, as well as Vandal Savage, who ironically was the organization’s founder, despite being the very first human with abilities. Due to this, Nabu has a very complicated relationship with his father. Klarion is believed to be the only cosmic entity currently part of the organization, mainly just there since he thinks all the chaos the organization will cause will be fun. He really isn’t interested in the transcendence talk.

Considering the fact that Klarion was responsible for tricking his father and for ending his human life, Klarion is Fate’s mortal enemy. The only reason why he’d be willing to work alongside him would be if an even bigger threat to cosmic order was to present itself.

Personality wise, Fate tends to be fairly emotionless, as he is a lord of order, after all. Though, he is known to be somewhat snarky, with a sense of humor since all order must have a little chaos. While not being particularly emotional, he is known to have a calming effect on those around him, making him capable of consulting with those who are struggling, as he is emotionally intelligent, despite being reserved himself. It’s not always intentional, but Fate’s voice often makes him sound formal, almost haughty, with some describing him as a bit arrogant. His voice also tends to stay the same in almost every scenario, and he has a stubborn streak, with it being difficult to change his mind on something once he’s set on what he wants to do. Because of this, he can sometimes be slightly moody when he has to change his plans, or start a difficult task suddenly.

Also, when Nabu is the one largely controlling Fate, his emotionlessness, and near arrogance become a lot more pronounced, while the host themselves is usually more gentle and mild-mannered. This is because Nabu himself is a being of essentially pure order, believing that he has no room for chaos at all. This does sometimes cause conflicts between the interests of Nabu and his host form. Additionally, wearing the helmet of Fate for long periods of time causes the host’s body to age faster, so Kent Nelson must sometimes take breaks from the helmet for the sake of his well being. The aging is due to Nabu having to channel his cosmic powers through a physical form, which has long lasting consequences.
