Enemies: Empusa: Empusa are creatures that resemble ants, with a small abdomen that swells up and turns red if they are able to feed, and a large head equipped with pincers. On closer inspection, however, they have three distinct human faces, two fleshy and with glowing eyes, either side of a central face with hollow eye sockets and an exposed jaw with sharp teeth that is incorporated into the creature's mandibles. What appear to be vestigial human hands can be seen on their forelimbs, and feet on their rear limbs. They also possess a tiny pair of functionless feathered wings on their back. Empusa are worker creatures and not particularly capable of combat: they are slow, weak, and only attack sporadically. If left alone, they will seek out any deposits of blood on the ground and drain them, filling their abdomen. In this state they will often attempt to escape from combat entirely to return the blood to the Qliphoth, tunneling into even the hardest ground and slipping away. Empusa queen: A massive insectoid creature resembling a praying mantis. She walks on all four legs most of the time, only rearing up to strike with her claws. The front of the head is a fully exposed human skull with two partial faces either side of her, with the skull framed by large mandibles. A "crown" of structures resembling purple Blood Clots forms the remainder of the head. The Queen is fairly slow in her basic state, attacking sporadically but suddenly which makes her hard to predict. She can perform multiple strikes with her forelimbs, a single heavy strike, a jumping attack to reposition herself which does damage on landing, or a grapple attack which will result in the Queen feeding on the player character if she hits. Like her offspring, the Empusa Queen can feed on blood to enter a "red" state. For the Queen, this is more like a Devil Trigger: she becomes tougher, extremely resilient to knockback, and attacks more quickly and more persistently. The Queen can enter this state by feeding on blood present in the environment, other enemies, or from the player character failing to escape her grab attack. Sometimes Queens simply spawn in their red state. Green Empusa: The Green Empusa is of similar overall build to other normal Empusa, but is significantly smaller, with a more slender body, greatly enlarged wings, an oversized abdomen and large compound eyes: the overall appearance is of a fly. Green Empusa tend to try to keep away from combat and will often retreat from player characters, preferring to attack at range or heal enemies not immediately engaged in combat. If they have used their healing ability, they tend to prioritize replenishing it. Hell Caina: The Hell Caina appear as skeletal figures with a long dark hood and a thorny crown, wielding massive scythes as weapons. They wear ragged black robes, and have reptilian clawed feet and a digitigrade posture. According to Nico's reports, they are related to the Hell Antenora and Hell Judecca, with the former being a Hell Caina tortured to the brink of insanity and the latter being a commander of Hell Caina. The Hell Caina have one main attack in which they swing their scythe several times as they close in. As their title "Cleaving Vanguard" implies, their attacks are sweeping and can hit in a wide frontal arc. Hell Antenora: Hell Antenoras are Hell Cainas who have been tortured extensively to the brink of insanity and given two massive cleavers. However, most of their features are hidden underneath a large hood, with their only visible deformity being their hunchback appearance. Hell Antenoras have no ranged attacks and will only attack using their two cleavers. Being knocked down will cause them to get up quickly and enter a berserk state in which their bodies glow purple. During this state, their attacks are much harder to interrupt, and become much faster. However, when they're lying face down on the ground, they're defenseless. They are not particularly fussy about what they attack, and will cleave through other demons if they are in the way, particularly in their berserk state. If they are hit by another enemy's attack, they will deliberately attack the enemy that struck them. Hell Judecca: Hell Judeccas are tall, thin demons with a skeletal appearance surrounded by filament like purple energy protecting them to an extent (similar to Hell Antenora in berserk state). They are related to Hell Caïna and Hell Antenora and can summon them both in combat. They are the strongest of the 3 Hells. They have two scythes for hands that they can use for attack and defense, and they can teleport. The Hell Judecca will keep teleporting in the battlefield, usually to get away from the player. It will keep teleporting if the player fires on them for too long. It can also spawn Hell Cainas or Hell Antenoras if it's not knocked down for too long. Pyrobats: Pyrobats greatly resembles the Human World's bats albeit with more monstrous appearance in their physiology. They have large wings and long tail ends with scorpion pincher-like barbs and glands that can generate fiery blasts within their biological systems. On their own, individual Pyrobats pose not much threat, and thus making up such shortcomings with numbers. Pyrobats tend to fly away from combat and prefer to fight with ranged attacks. They often attack when you're dealing with another demon. Sin scythes and sin scissors: Sins come in two varieties, based on the weapon they use: Sin Scissors and Sin Scythes. Both wear masks to maintain not only their form, but their power as well when in the Human World. Their bodies seem to consist only of robes filled with dark, almost ethereal energy. True to their name, Sin Scissors use a pair of rusted scissors to tear and clip at their foes, while Sin Scythes use scythes to rip and slice their enemies to pieces. Both are capable of flying, as well as phasing in and out of walls. With both of these enemies, it is best to keep moving when they descend near your position. The Sin Scythes are almost identical to the Sin Scissors, except that they emphasize fast, multi-hit attacks. The primary attack to watch out for is the “Boomerang Scythe” technique they will occasionally use. The best way to weaken these two forms is to shoot their masks with a firearm, the Shotgun being particularly effective at close-range. Their haunting laughter echoes as these demons' approach and will also be heard when they are defeated. Riot: Riots are reptilian lesser demons evolved from harsh environment of the Underworld, gaining retractable razor-sharp claws that can cut through steel with ease, two rows of sharp teeth, and lower jaw that can separate sideways. They have strong muscles on their limbs that have strength equal to a hydraulic cylinder that enable these creatures to jump incredibly high. While sharp, their claws can be broken with enough force. True to their name, Riots often appear in groups and are among the more aggressive species of lesser demons. Riots specialize in quick attacks and nimble movements; capable of walking on both their hind legs and on all fours, the latter is largely used for long-distance jumps while the former allows them to make use of their claws for successive slashing attacks. In smaller environments, it's not uncommon to find them leaping off of nearby walls to throw themselves towards the player, intent on tackling them into the floor. Proto angelos: Proto Angelos appears as a tall, humanoid demons in colored armor with red, pulsating lines running across it, and a purple, bat like cape. They're very similar to Nelo Angelo (Not goat like Proto Angelo) in appearance and they possess similar fighting style. Proto Angelos fight with a giant unnamed broadsword which they can charge with blue electricity. Proto Angelos occasionally show sparks of personality, mostly aggression. They are capable of ordering and organizing the weaker Scudo Angelos, having them form formations and employ different tactics in battle. Aside from these traits, they lack true personalities and only exist to lead their weaker Scudo counterparts. Scudo angelos: Scudo Angelos appears as a humanoid demons in black armor with blue ornaments on it as well as blue cape on their back. They possess one handed demonic sword as well as shield that they're using to parry attacks. The Scudo Angelos, just like Bianco Angelos seems to have no real self and follow the orders of the Proto Angelos. Scudo Angelos posses a variety of attacks with sword and shield, however their attacks are rather slow and easy to predict. Under the control of Proto Angelo, they'll become more aggressive and perform a number of team attacks. Baphomet: Baphomets are goat-like demons with horns similar to an ordinary goat. They have blue green fur, a long tail, and long talons. They have ability to use ice. Nobody: Nobodies are strange monkey-like demons, said to be looked down upon by other denizens of the Underworld to the point that they do not even warrant being given a name. They are vaguely humanoid but with their four walking limbs all ending in hands, and a much larger hand growing out of the middle of their back. They move by crawling on all fours, usually only rising up to deliver vicious kicks to their opponents or perform their strange dance. They are often encountered in packs, and emit whooping cries as they attack. Nobodies have a number of bizarre abilities: perhaps their most distinctive is their ability to change size, growing much larger when they put on a magical mask. In their smaller form they will generally only swat at people with their outsized arm, but the larger form is a lot more dangerous with numerous abilities including grappling Dante by the head with the hand growing out of its back, a powerful jump-kick, and their signature "evil dance" which siphons away power from DT gauges. Their unnatural metabolism creates unstable byproducts in the form of eyeball-like growths that a large Nobody can pick up and throw or drop on the ground to function as a proximity mine. In addition, as they die these same processes run out of control, obliterating their body in a series of gruesome explosions. Chaos: Chaoses are reptilian lesser demons evolved from harsh environments of the Underworld like Riot. In their case, they develop razor-sharp scutes across the spine that can be deployed to cut and shred things like a circular saw via a rolling attack, along with a neurotoxin sac hidden within the chest cavity which gives them ability to spit poison at range, in addition to their claws and sharp teeth. While sharp, each of their scutes can be shattered with enough force, lowering the effectiveness of their roll attacks. Hellbats: Hellbats are red bat-like demons with flaming bodies. Fury: The Fury's species have mutated over time to achieve greater speed to hunt down prey, many generations have passed in order to reach the level of the Fury. It's also able to spawn a blade out of its arm without injuring itself, using it to damage its targets. The Fury will never attack the player head-on, but instead always perform a teleporting pattern where it will then suddenly appear and try to strike its target. It has multiple attack patterns which are indicated by the animations done when it's growing the blade out of its arm. The Fury can only be hit at specific moments during its animations, or when it is knocked down. Forcing the player to wait for the right moment to strike. It also has one distinct teleporting pattern where it will not attack the player, but instead reposition somewhere else on the battlefield so it can try to start an attack again. The lusachia: Obsessed with the magic that comes from arcane chants, Lusachias underwent a multi-generational evolution to develop multiple mouths which allow for them to recite several spells at once. As an unfortunate side effect of this new form, they've been reduced to a floating mass of dark-colored flesh with severe muscle atrophy, and are now barely able to move their remaining limbs. Nevertheless, this sacrifice proved to be insignificant in comparison to the magical power that was gained as a result. The Lusachia, similar to the Hell Judecca, will keep teleporting in the battlefield in order to get away from the player. It has long preparatory motions before all of its attacks, which allows the player to be highly aggressive. Once knocked down, they will eventually teleport away. Lusachia has multiple attacks: Ice Spell (Small): the demon casts two ice-elemental magic circles that float around it. By themselves, these circles are harmless, but when Lusachia performs any other attack (Ice Spell (Big), Plasma Orb, Heat Ray), they'll automatically shoot one small ice projectile each towards the player, in addition to any projectile created by the active attack. The ice projectiles can be deflected. Ice Spell (Big): similar to the previous one, the demon casts an ice-elemental magic circle. However, this one is bigger and focused in front of it for a direct attack. After charging it, a big ice projectile will be shot towards the player in a straight line. The ice projectile can be deflected, and if it hits Lusachia on its way back, it'll stun the demon. Plasma Orb: the demon surrounds itself with lightning and summons five orbs of electricity. These are individual projectiles that can be directly targeted and destroyed. They'll track the player's position but move slowly and erratically, often describing a curve. They'll disappear if they impact on a solid surface. Heat Ray: Lusachia focuses energy on its hands, and once charged, shoots a powerful beam towards the player's current position (at the last moment of the charging phase). The beam cannot be destroyed or deflected, but it's easily avoided by jumping or moving away just at the last second before it's fired. Malefice: a very powerful attack, but has the longest charge time of all of Lusachia's attacks, and leaves the demon vulnerable whether it hits or not. When the demon drops its ice-elemental magic circles (if any) and starts slowly floating upwards while dark energy emanates both from it and the player, it's indication that the attack is being prepared. If nothing is done, once charged, a dark explosion will fill the screen and damage the player; after that, Lusachia enters a long weakened state in which it'll remain stunned, with its barrier down, unable to teleport or attack. If it is knocked out of the charging phase, it'll enter a shorter weakened state instead. Similar to Heat Ray, this attack tracks the player's position up until the last second of the charging phase: it's thus possible to avoid the attack altogether with a well-timed dash.
All of the Enemies are female. Some Enemies, like the Lusachia, Hell Caina, Green Empusa, and Hell Antenora having hanging breasts.
Red Grave City features mostly neoclassical architecture typical of the Victorian era, with some older structures such as the cathedral, speaking of a long history. It is not without modern features, however, including recent-looking apartment blocks, a neon-lit district, and a subway network. A large bridge is used to cross the nearby river. There are many old-fashioned features such as red telephone boxes, and numerous statues in public areas. There is also an industrial area with a rail freight terminal. During the demonic incursion, the city is sealed off by the military after Urizen causes the Qliphoth to emerge. Red Grave City is slowly torn apart, going from thick thorny roots ripping through individual buildings to entire districts being lifted up and split apart as the demonic tree's root system establishes itself. Extensive flooding occurs, and much of the remaining civilian population is either killed by demons or reduced to husks after being drained of their blood.
the Qliphoth is a giant demonic tree that grows in the Underworld and, when sufficiently nourished, grows a fruit that imbues any demon that consumes it with divine power. Only one fruit can grow every few thousand years. The Qliphoth thrives on human blood, and those whose blood it sucks are turned into lifeless husks. As a tree born in the Underworld, it is the inverse of trees from the mortal plane: the Qliphoth's branches are located deep beneath the ground, while its thorny roots grow up to the surface and eventually into the sky. When fully manifested, the tree possesses the power to fuse the Human World and the Demon World into one whole. The Qliphoth has a symbiotic relationship with a species of demons called Empusa, ant-like monstrosities which are sent out to slaughter humans and bring their blood back to the tree's root system.
