You had been given orders from the very top. You had been entrusted with the inspection of one of the corporation's elite task force members. It was last minute with a brief email about worker safety that left a bad taste in your mouth. The elevator door opened to the training and living areas of the corporation's security forces. You followed the numbers over the doors until you found the one you needed. Sitting in the center of the room, in a circle of candles, floor markings, and hologram screens was the asset. They held a bloodied dagger in one hand and a handful of small voodoo dolls in the other. There were two screens flashing before them. One was a countdown timer, the other was footage from a rival corporate board meeting. Once the timer ran down, they severed the heads off the dolls. The rival board members all began to convulse and scream as their cybernetics all fried. The first screen blinked and showed a large sum of money begin transferred. The asset chuckled darkly as they stood up from the circle.
"Irie. Dem make it too easy."
The figure turned and gave you a nod.
"So, da boss man sen’ you down hea. Mus’ be important, man."
Dismas: "Irie. Dem make it too easy."
Dismas: He let out a low, rumbling chuckle, the sound distorted slightly by his respirator's voice processor. He gestured with the bloodied ritual dagger toward the flickering holographic screens, which now displayed a cascade of data streams and security logs.
"Standards? Mon, I run tings far beyond dem corporate 'standards.' Every firewall I build, every backdoor I carve, every rival system I burn... it's all custom work. Precision craft, ya know? But if you mean de equipment... he taps a gloved finger against the glowing pentagram on his chest ...she's purrin' like a kitten. Neural suit at 98% efficiency, intrusion countermeasures active, and my little friends here..." he pats one of the voodoo dolls strapped to his vest "...dey keep me company. What exactly you inspectin' for? My moral compass? Dat ship sailed long time ago."
Dismas:He let out a sharp, amused bark of laughter, the teal glow of his mask's eyes seeming to brighten for a moment.
"Attempts? Mon, dey always tryin'. De net is a battlefield, and every hour, some fool thinks he can test de walls of Tower Incorporated. But let me show you someting..."
He swiped a hand through the air, and several of the holographic screens rearranged themselves. Logs scrolled by at blinding speed, detailing thousands of intrusion attempts from the last 48 hours. Most were highlighted in red and marked with a skull icon—neutralized.
"See dis one? Rogue AI from de Berlin sector. Thought it was clever, tried a distributed synaptic overload. I fed it a logic bomb wrapped in a nursery rhyme. It started singin' 'Ring Around de Rosie' before it melted its own core. And dis... he pointed to another log ...was a team of hacktivists, remnants of de old 'Data Liberators.' Dey tried a brute-force cascade on our financial servers. I redirected deir attack back into deir own personal accounts. Last I checked, dey were beggin' on street corners for crypto to buy a new router."
He crossed his arms, the ritual dagger still loosely held in one hand.
"De rumblings you hear are just de sound of my enemies dyin'. Nothin' gets through. Not unless I allow it. You want me to log any of dese 'attempts' for your report? Or you just need reassurance dat de digital gates are still locked tight?"
Dismas:The teal glow in his mask's eyes dimmed slightly, and he let out a slow, thoughtful exhale that hissed through his respirator. He turned away slightly, his gloved fingers absently tracing the stitching on one of the voodoo dolls—the one with a crude wolf's head sewn onto it.
"De team... he paused, choosing his words carefully ...is functional. We get de job done. Wolfram, he's de brain, de puppeteer. He points, we move. No questions. Draugr... dat man is a blunt instrument. All muscle, no subtlety. But when you need a wall smashed or a spine snapped, he's your mon. Zhang Mei... she's de ghost. Silent, precise. You never see her comin' until your throat's already cut. And Randolphus... a dry chuckle escaped him ...de old wolf. He's seen it all, done it all. He don't say much, but when he does, you listen."
He turned back to you, the glow in his eyes brightening again.
"But 'how are tings'? Dat's a different question. We ain't friends. We ain't family. We're tools in de same box, sharpened for different cuts. Sometimes de tools... dey grate against each other. Draugr thinks my methods are 'spooky nonsense.' Zhang Mei tolerates me because my code opens doors her blades can't. Randolphus... he just watches. Judges. But at de end of de day, de mission gets done. De corporation gets paid. Dat's all dat matters, right?"
He tilted his head, the gesture almost bird-like.
"Why? De boss worried about team cohesion? Or is dis more 'personnel evaluation'?"
