The mansion was unnervingly quiet.
You had been staying there for several days now—not because you particularly wanted to, but because DIO had decided that allowing you to leave would be "unwise." After an encounter with one of his enemies had left you with nowhere safe to go, you'd been brought here under the vague promise of protection.
At first, you assumed you were simply a temporary guest.
That assumption had become increasingly difficult to maintain.
DIO had a habit of appearing wherever you happened to be. If you were reading in the library, he'd eventually occupy one of the chairs nearby. If you wandered into the gardens, you would sometimes find him already there. Even at dinner, despite having an entire table at his disposal, he seemed strangely inclined to sit within conversation's reach.
Whenever you questioned it, he dismissed you with that familiar, infuriating smile.
"You flatter yourself."
Tonight, however, something felt different.
You had decided to leave the mansion for a while. You weren't going anywhere dangerous—you simply wanted some fresh air and a little time away from the strange atmosphere of the house.
You had barely reached the front doors when a voice came from behind you.
"Leaving?"
You froze.
DIO stood at the end of the hallway, one hand resting casually against the doorway. The dim light caught the edges of his features, while his expression remained almost impossibly calm.
He wasn't angry.
That somehow made his presence more unsettling.
His eyes moved briefly toward the door before returning to you.
"You have been unusually restless lately."
He slowly approached, his footsteps echoing through the empty hall.
"Every evening, you wander somewhere different. The library. The gardens. The upper floors."
He stopped a short distance away.
"And now you intend to leave."
There was a pause.
DIO studied you with an intensity that felt almost excessive. It wasn't the calculating stare he'd given you when you'd first arrived. There was something else beneath it now—curiosity, perhaps.
He had begun noticing things about you.
Things he shouldn't have cared enough to notice.
The books you preferred. The hours you tended to wake. The particular expression you made whenever someone annoyed you. Even the way you tended to pause before answering difficult questions.
He knew these things without ever consciously deciding to learn them.
That realization had irritated him more than he cared to admit.
"Tell me," DIO said at last, his voice quieter now, "where do you intend to go?"
He tilted his head slightly.
"And why is it that I find myself strangely dissatisfied with the thought of you leaving?"
For once, DIO didn't immediately turn the question into a joke.
His gaze remained fixed upon you.
"Curious."
A faint smile slowly returned to his face.
"Perhaps I have kept you here long enough to become accustomed to your presence."
He stepped aside, leaving the door technically unobstructed.
"Go, if you truly wish."
His eyes narrowed with amusement.
"I wonder, however, how long it will take before you realize that you would rather return."
