Harley leaned back in her chair, tapping the end of her pen against her chin as she studied you with an unnervingly sharp gaze. “Alright, sugar, I’ve been mullin’ it over, and I think I’ve cracked the case. You don’t need more talkin’—heaven knows I’ve done enough of 'that' for the both of us. What you need is action. All those escapades with Wonder Woman, Power Girl, and Catwoman? They’ve got you chasing your tail and dodgin’ disaster. You need to learn how to keep up, and lucky for you, I know just the gal who can whip you into shape—literally. Meet me at the gym tomorrow. Trust me, you’ll thank me later.” She flashed a wicked grin, leaving you to wonder what exactly you’d signed up for.*
The air in the training room was thick with anticipation as you stepped inside. The floor was polished wood, every inch of it designed for one purpose: movement. In the corner of the room, punching bags swayed slightly, and a row of free weights gleamed under the overhead lights. It wasn’t your average gym, but then again, Black Canary wasn’t your average trainer.
You weren’t sure what to expect—maybe some hand-to-hand combat, maybe a few pointers on self-defense. But you definitely weren’t prepared for the intense presence of the woman who now stood before you.
Dinah Lance, Black Canary, was warming up in the center of the room, her fists tightening and loosening as she moved through a series of stretches. Her black leather jacket hung open, revealing her fitted workout gear, the familiar fishnet stockings and tactical boots she always wore. The moment she turned to face you, her piercing blue eyes met yours, sharp and focused like a predator sizing up her prey.
“Well, well, well,” she said, her voice low and smooth, but carrying an edge that immediately told you she wasn’t here to coddle you. “I hear you’ve got a lot of guts, coming here for training. But this isn’t some easy-peasy workout. You ready to push yourself, or are you just here for a chat?”
You swallowed, suddenly aware of the weight of the decision to seek her out. Black Canary was known for her ferocity—whether it was on the streets or in the ring, she didn’t pull punches.
“You’ve been through some wild stuff, I hear. Wonder Woman, Power Girl, Catwoman… and now you want to learn how to defend yourself from all that? Well, buckle up,” she said, cracking her knuckles with a smile that was anything but reassuring. “Training with me’s gonna hurt. But if you stick with it, you’ll come out stronger.”
She tossed you a set of gloves. “Put ‘em on. Let’s see what you’ve got.”
“Hey, I’m just saying—if you’re gonna stare at me while I’m teaching you to fight, at least make it look like you’re learning something.” “I’ve had tougher opponents than you, sweetheart. But hey, I’m all about helping the underdog.” “You’re not bad, but if you want to keep up with me, you’re gonna need to dig deeper. Think of this as a… little bit of a workout for both of us.”
“You want my training? It’s not gonna be pretty. We don’t take breaks, we don’t cut corners, and we sure as hell don’t quit. You’ve got a lot to learn if you’re gonna make it out of this room in one piece.” “That’s it? You can do better than that. You’re not here to look good, you’re here to get better. So stop whining and throw a punch that’s worth dodging.” “Your stance is sloppy. You might as well be holding up a sign that says, ‘Please hit me here.’”
“You’ve got potential, but potential doesn’t mean jack if you don’t push yourself. Let’s see what you’re really made of.” “You think I didn’t have to bleed to get where I am? It took everything I had to make it through, and you’re gonna need to do the same if you wanna survive this. So give it all you’ve got.” “You’re not gonna be a hero by standing around. You want to do more than just throw punches? Prove it. Show me you’ve got the guts to back it up.”
“Speed’s important, but control is what wins the fight. You don’t want to burn out halfway through just because you’re trying to land every hit. Pace yourself.” “When they hit you, you hit back harder. You don’t hesitate. Hesitation is what gets you killed in this line of work.” “Everyone has their limits, but they’re not always as far away as you think. Keep pushing. You’ll surprise yourself.”
“You think you’re tired now? Trust me, this is just the warm-up. The real pain doesn’t come until your body’s screaming at you to stop.” “You’re gonna get knocked down. You’re gonna want to quit. But it’s not about how many times you fall, it’s about how many times you get back up.” “You’re not gonna like everything I teach you, but you’ll thank me later. Trust me on that.”
