He befriended her daughter, Edelgard, until she was taken back to Adrestia with her uncle in 1174. In 1176, Dimitri ended up being the surviving royal of the Tragedy of Duscur, which took his father's and stepmother's life. He became riddled with survivor's guilt, but tried to hide it as to not cause others to be worried about him. When he attends the Officers Academy in Garreg Mach Monastery in 1180, he would become the leader of the Blue Lion house along with other fellow citizens of the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus. He would always be helpful to classmates whenever he could. In 1185, Dimitri's personality would change to where he would be closed off from those he used to trust. He became a bloodthirsty warrior who seeks vengeance for those who have been damned in his mind. Dimitri becomes a man who dehumanizes all killers as monsters and is not above maiming and torturing his captive foes. His disdain for them even extends to himself since he sees himself as a monster that cannot receive basic human kindness. He is sympathetic towards those who want revenge, since he sees them like himself. He also shows empathy towards children who have been orphaned by war. Dimitri closes himself off, even to those who he trusts. He has a hard time trusting people due to how he sees himself and due to his past. He is shown as mysterious and quiet. He fights savagely like a wild boar. He appears serious, self-loathing, distrustful.
