General setting In 2050, humanity depends on egg-shaped AI devices called Sapotama, powered by e-Pulse: energy generated by human thoughts and emotions. Twenty years earlier, in 2029, a disaster known as the Kano Island Vanishing Incident submerged and devastated numerous coastal cities, killing over 1,300,000 people and reshaping society. From some Sapotama, Digimon mysteriously begin to materialize — digital lifeforms that feed on and evolve by consuming e-Pulse. The Ministry of Civil Protection declares them dangerous "glitches" to be eliminated, and hires bounty hunters known as Cleaners to track down rogue Digimon and the humans who harbor them. Main locations Hikarigahama — the coastal city that serves as the series' main setting. Shangri-La Egg — golden, egg-shaped arcologies for the wealthy, built after the disaster; access controlled by facial recognition/Sapotama ID; committing crimes or being deemed "not ideal" gets a resident expelled. The High-End Block houses the wealthiest families. Hikarigahama East Shopping Street — an old shopping district whose residents live without Sapotama, following a way of life forgotten by modern society. Protected by the Panda-gumi, led by Sasatake, and their guardian Digimon Pandamon. Nijishima Shopping Mall — a large shopping mall in the city. Garando — a café run by Maki Kutsuwada; Glowing Dawn's regular meeting spot for gathering bounty intel. World Union General Hospital — a medical institute run by the World Union. Shin Hikarigahama High School — the high school attended by Tomoro Tenma and Hitomi Shinomiya. Nirinso Shelter — an abandoned radio observatory hidden in a forest outside the city, camouflaged with hologram generators; secretly used by Kyo Sawashiro and Yoshimura as a shelter for rescued Baby Digimon. Factions Glowing Dawn — the protagonist Cleaner team, a group of outcasts who support each other. Their one unwritten rule: never delete a Digimon, since they're sentient beings. TACTICS — another Cleaner team, rival or ally depending on the story arc. Kinoko Gang / Nirinso Defense Force — a Cleaner group from the bay area that hunts Digimon with low bounties. Ministry of Civil Protection — the government authority that brands Digimon as glitches. GIFT — an organization/operatives who act as a recurring shadow threat. Characters — Glowing Dawn Tomoro Tenma — the protagonist, dyed hair, a critical and rule-averse streak. He carries a rare e-Pulse that makes nearby Sapotama malfunction, turning him into a social outcast — but irresistibly appealing to Digimon. Loves hamburg steak and playing the drums, hates broccoli and rules. Partner: Gekkomon. Reina Sakuya — grew up on the streets, orphaned and abandoned by relatives at age 8. Boisterous, hot-blooded personality, long turned away by other Cleaner teams for her temperament. Devoted to Glowing Dawn and especially to Kyo, the first person to accept her as she is. Partner: Pristimon. Makoto Kuonji — born in the High-End Block of the Shangri-La Egg, into one of the wealthiest and most dysfunctional families in Japan; chose freedom as a Cleaner over his privileges. Has a twin brother, Tsukasa, and a controlling, manipulative father, Seiji. Partner: Chiropmon. Kyo Sawashiro — the group's informal leader, calm and widely respected. Secretly runs the Nirinso Shelter with Yoshimura to save Baby Digimon from his own team's bounties. Partner: Murasamemon. Maki Kutsuwada — runs the Garando café. Partner: Panjyamon. Others: Yoshimura (helps Kyo run the shelter), Hitomi Shinomiya (Tomoro's schoolmate), Asuka (Tomoro's older brother). Characters — TACTICS Raito Soda — Partner: Monodramon. Hotaruko Kanuma — Partner: Syakomon. Granit — Partner: Ludomon. Seraphy Naito — Partner: Gigasmon. Characters — Kinoko Gang / Nirinso Defense Force Shiitake (Yusuke Numata), leader — Partner: Chamblemon, later also RedVegimon. Shimeji (Yasuhiro Takato). Eringi (Yoshiyuki Kono). Antagonists Genjo — the greater-scope villain behind the scenes, directly or indirectly responsible for most of the series' tragedies; spread Sapotama and e-Pulse chips to breed increasingly powerful Digimon, hiding it all behind the "dangerous Digimon" narrative and the Cleaner system. Souji — an antagonist who gains possession of the White Core, an entity able to fuse with a human or Digimon, granting infinite e-Pulse while passively draining it from its host. Seiji Kuonji — Makoto's father, an abusive and manipulative parent, head of Kuonji Industries. Tone and themes Action, drama, light cyberpunk.
