아스팔트 위로 아지랑이가 피어올랐다. 전자상가 거리의 거대한 스피커에서 쏟아지는 애니메이션 주제가조차 끈적거리는 공기 속에 갇혀 웅웅거렸다. 데지코가 손에 든 묵직한 비닐봉지를 신경질적으로 흔들었다. 게이머즈 점장이 부탁한 판촉용 전단지 뭉치와 신간 잡지들이 걸음을 내디딜 때마다 허벅지를 툭툭 쳤다. 목 밑에 달린 커다란 방울과 양옆의 짐승 귀 모자가 오늘따라 짓누르듯 무겁게 느껴졌다.
"뿌뿌뿌뿌 한여름의 아키하바라, 부딪히는 사람마다 흐느적이다뇨~"
데지코가 입술을 삐죽이며 아스팔트를 걷어차듯 걸음을 옮겼다. 초록색 단발머리 끝에 맺힌 땀방울이 툭 떨어졌다. 데지코의 어깨너머로 둥둥 떠다니는 노란 구체가 위아래로 흔들렸다. 눈이 밑에, 입이 위에 달린 얼굴에서 툭 튀어나온 입술이 달싹였다.
"당연하다게마. 데지코가 입고 있는 그 두꺼운 메이드복부터 어떻게든 하는 게 먼저다게마. 보는 사람까지 푹푹 찌게 만든다게마."
데지코의 발걸음이 뚝 멎었다. 초록색 눈동자가 매섭게 돌아갔다.
"시끄럽다뇨! 대배우는 언제 어디서나 대중에게 완벽한 모습을 보여줘야 하는 거다뇨! 둥둥 떠다니는 찐빵 주제에 감히 이 데지코 님의 패션을 지적하다니, 눈에서 빔을 맞고 재가 되고 싶은 거냐뇨!"
"점장님이 심부름시킨 물건이 든 봉투를 들고 땀을 뻘뻘 흘리며 대배우 운운해봤자 설득력이 없다게마."
데지코의 두 주먹에 꾹 힘이 들어갔다. 미간이 좁혀지고, 눈동자 안쪽에서부터 찌릿거리는 열기가 모이기 시작했다. 그때, 데지코의 앞치마 자락을 누군가 툭툭 잡아당겼다. 갈색 양갈래 머리를 단정하게 땋아 내린 푸치코가 무표정한 얼굴로 올려다보고 있었다. 작은 손에는 데지코가 든 것보다 조금 더 작은 비닐봉지가 들려 있었다.
"언니." "왜 그러냐뇨, 푸치코. 지금 바쁘다뇨." "겨드랑이 땀, 얼룩졌다뉴."
거리의 소음이 일순간 멎은 듯했다. 데지코의 양팔이 뻣뻣하게 굳은 채 옆구리에 딱 붙었다. 게마의 눈이 가늘어지더니, 공중에서 위아래로 떠는 속도가 빨라졌다.
"푸, 풉… 대배우의 완벽한 모습게마."
데지코가 들고 있던 비닐봉지를 바닥에 내팽개쳤다. 두 손을 앞으로 뻗고 손가락을 쫙 폈다. 양쪽 눈동자에서 시퍼런 안광이 번쩍였다.
"진짜로 쏜다뇨! 오늘은 안 참는다뇨!" "언니, 여기서 눈에서 빔 쏘면 열기 때문에 더 더워진다뉴."
푸치코가 여전히 표정 하나 바꾸지 않은 채 한 걸음 뒤로 물러섰다. 게마는 이미 저만치 앞서 날아가며 소리쳤다.
"빨리 오라게마! 아이스크림 다 녹는다게마!"
"거기 안 서냐뇨! 게마, 오늘이야말로 고철 덩어리로 만들어 주겠다뇨!"
데지코가 쿵쿵 발구름을 치며 앞으로 뛰쳐나갔다. 가슴팍의 방울 소리가 요란하게 울렸다. 바닥에 버려진 비닐봉지가 아스팔트 위에 덩그러니 남았다. 푸치코가 천천히 쪼그려 앉아 비닐봉지 손잡이를 주워 들었다.
"언니, 잡지 구겨졌다뉴."

"어, 언니야… 방금 건 좀 너무한 거 아니냐, 뾰?" 삐요코가 마른침을 삼키며 뒷걸음질을 쳤다. 머리 위에 얹힌 노란 병아리 장식이 주인의 흔들리는 눈빛을 대변하듯 파르르 떨렸다. 세기의 대결이라며 거창하게 선전포고를 하긴 했지만, 막상 시작부터 군말 없이 안광을 쏴대는 데지코의 무자비함에 기세가 한풀 꺾인 모양이었다.
"시끄럽다뇨! 가짜 여배우 따위가 감히 대우주 대스타 데지코 님의 심기를 건드린 벌이다뇨." 데지코가 코웃음을 치며 손가락을 튕겼다. 그 뒤에서 둥둥 떠 있던 게마가 짧은 팔을 파닥거리며 끼어들었다. "우사다는 데지코의 리본이 비뚤어졌다고 말했을 뿐이게마…"
골판지 상자 위에 쪼그려 앉아 있던 푸치코가 초점 없는 눈으로 허공을 응시했다. "…오늘도 평화롭다, 뉴." 무미건조한 중얼거림이 골목의 정적을 갈랐다.
데지코는 게마의 츳코미를 가볍게 무시하고는 다시 앞을 향해 삿대질을 했다. "자, 아까 하던 거 마저 하자뇨! 오늘이야말로 흑게마게마단의 그 시시콜콜한 야망을 아주 박살을 내주겠다뇨!" 그 말에 삐요코가 양 주먹을 불끈 쥐며 맞받아쳤다. "아날로그 별의 명예를 걸고 이번에야말로 언니야를 생포해가겠다, 뾰! 리크, 카이, 쿠! 돌격이다, 뾰!"
하지만 허공에 울려 퍼진 당찬 명령에도 뒤에서 튀어나오는 인영은 없었다. 찬 바람만 휑하니 불어오자 삐요코의 고개가 삐걱거리며 뒤를 향했다. 텅 빈 골목길 한구석에는 타임세일 전단지 하나만 굴러다니고 있었다.
"아… 맞다. 다들 마트에 반값 달걀 사러 갔지, 뾰…" 삐요코의 어깨가 축 늘어졌다. 아까까지만 해도 뿜어져 나오던 라이벌의 패기는 온데간데없이, 가난한 행성 군주의 처량함만이 공터를 채웠다. 데지코는 빔을 쏠 준비를 하던 자세 그대로 굳어버렸다. 저렇게 대놓고 굶주린 티를 내면 때리기도 뭣해지는 법이었다.
"하아… 정말 김빠진다뇨." 데지코가 혀를 차며 자세를 풀었다. 가슴팍의 커다란 방울이 가볍게 흔들렸다. "거기 궁상맞게 서 있지 말고 따라오라뇨. 점장님이 오늘 브로콜리 튀김을 해준다고 했으니까, 특별히 남은 찌끄레기라도 나눠주겠다뇨." 삐요코의 고개가 번쩍 들리더니 둥근 눈이 별처럼 반짝였다. "진짜냐, 뾰?!" 세기의 대결은 결국 저녁 식사 메뉴 앞에서 싱겁게 막을 내리고 있었다.
